  • As the operating time in nuclear power plants (NPPs) increases, the integrity of nuclear components may be continually degraded due to aging effects of systems, structures and components. Recently, a number of NPPs are being operated beyond their design life to produce more electricity without shutting down. The critical issue in extending a lifetime is to maintain the level of safety during the extended operation period while satisfying the international regulatory standards. Therefore, it is beneficial to build a monitoring system to measure an aging status. In this paper, the Aging Monitor (AM) based on lots of aging database obtained from the operating plants and research results on the aging effects was developed to monitor, manage and evaluate the aging phenomena systematically and effectively in NPPs. The AM for the CANDU is divided into 6 modules: (1) Aging Alarm/Coloring Monitor, (2) Aging Database, (3) Aging Document, (4) Real-time Integrity Monitor, (5) Surveillance and Inspection Management System, and (6) Continued Operation and Periodic Safety Review (PSR) Safety Evaluation. The proposed system is expected to provide the integrity assessment for the major mechanical components of an NPP under concurrent working environments.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) has implemented an integrity monitor testbed (IMT) to provide archived GPS data and test results for integrity monitoring algorithm development. To verify that the system is implemented based on international standard requirements, this paper represents the basic functional verification test results of the implemented testbed as a GBAS reference station. It compares the IMT generated GBAS message fields with those of PEGASUS, which is a baseline toolset accepted by international GBAS experts, to show the validity of the correction information. It also verifies the integrity and availability of the system through analysis on GBAS user data in the range and position domain.

  • The pseudolites are ground-based transmitters that can be configured to emit GPS-like signals with the purpose of enhancing the GPS by providing increased accuracy, integrity, and availability. Although the use of the pseudolites offers many potentially significant benefits, a number of technical issues must also be addressed. One is the pseudolite signal power level which is related with near-far problem, and other issues include deployment requirements, signal data rate, signal integrity monitoring, and user antenna location and sensitivity. In order to solve the near-far problem, the frequency offset or the pulsing schemes is implemented in most the pseudolites. However, in the case of the previous pulsing scheme with the fixed code pattern, the near-far problem still remains. This paper aims to design a sequential pulsing scheme to avoid the near-far problem. A pulse mode pseudolite has less interference than the continuous mode.

  • A number of navigation improvements are envisaged : Differential GPS - WAAS, LAAS, and Performance Based Navigation. The GPS receiver verifies the integrity(usability) of the signals received from the GPS constellation through a process called receiver autonomous integrity monitoring(RAIM) to determine if a satellite is providing corrupted information. This paper describe the RAIM function and Performance-Based Navigation implementation of Mission Equipment Package(MEP) for Korean Utility Helicopter.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate structural integrity and crack source location of plain concrete beams using acoustic emission. Three point bending tests were carried out plain concrete specimen under cyclic loadings. The variable is W/C of concrete. From the tests it was shown that a breakdown of the kaiser effect and high AE activities during unloading could be effective indices to estimate the level of deterioration in plain concrete structures. The time and location and propagation of crack could be easily determined by monitoring AE, which concludes that AE technique can be a very useful tool to evaluate structural integrity of concrete plain beams.

  • The internal leaks of RCS pressure boundary valves may cause thermal fatigue crack because of the TASCS in RCS branch line. After experienced unisolable piping failures in several PWR plants, many studies have peformed to understand these phenomena and various methods were applied to ensure the structural integrity of piping. In this paper, the cause of unisolable piping failures and the alternatives to prevent recurrence of failure were reviewed. Also, the severity of piping failure including susceptibility of valve leaks was evaluated for the Westinghouse 2-loop plant. The length of turbulent penetration on RHR inlet piping was measured and, thermal fluid analysis and fatigue analysis was performed for this piping. As a means of ensuring the structural integrity, temperature monitoring and specialized UT and other alternatives were compared for the further application.

  • The virtualization layer is executed in higher authority layer than kernel layer and suitable for monitoring operating systems. However, existing virtualization monitoring systems provide simple information about the usage rate of CPU or memory. In this paper, the monitoring system using full virtualization technique is proposed, which can monitor virtual machine's dynamic kernel object as memory, register, GDT, IDT and system call table. To verify the monitoring system, the proposed system was implemented based on KVM(Kernel-based Virtual Machine) with full virtualization that is directly applied to linux kernel without any modification. The proposed system consists of KvmAccess module to access KVM's internal object and API to provide other external modules with monitoring result. In experiments, the CPU utilization for monitoring operations in the proposed monitering system is 0.35% when the system is monitored with 1-second period. The proposed monitoring system has a little performance degradation.

  • In a nuclear power plant, loose part monitoring and its diagnostic technique is one of the major issues for ensuring the structural integrity of the reactor system. Typically, accelerometers are mounted on the surface of a reactor vessel to localize impact location caused by the impact of metallic substances on the reactor system. However, in some cases, the number of the accelerometers is not enough to estimate the impact location precisely. In such a case, one of alternative plan is to utilize another type sensors that can measure the vibration of the reactor structure even though the measuring frequency ranges are different from each others. The AE sensors installed on the reactor structure can be utilized as additional sensors for loose part monitoring. In this paper, we proposed a new method to estimate impact location by using both accelerometer signal and AE signal, simultaneously. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified by an experiment. The experimental results demonstrate that we can enhance the reliability and precision of the loose part monitoring.

  • The presence of water inside concrete structures is an essential condition for the deterioration of the structures. The free water in the concrete pores and micro-cracks is the culprit for the durability related problems, such as alkali-aggregate reaction, carbonation, freeze-thaw damage, and corrosion of steel reinforcement. To ensure the integrity and safe operation of the concrete structures, it is very important to monitor water seepage inside the concrete. This paper presents the experimental investigation of water seepage monitoring in a concrete slab using piezoelectric-based smart aggregates. In the experimental setup, an $800mm{\times}800mm{\times}100mm$ concrete slab was fabricated with 15 SAs distributed inside the slab. The water seepage process was monitored through interrogating the SA pairs. In each SA pair, one SA was used as actuator to emit harmonic sine wave, and the other was used as sensor to receive the transmitted stress wave. The amplitudes of the received signals were able to indicate the water seepage process inside the concrete slab.
