전계형 스위칭 소자가 집적된 마이크로 LED 디스플레이 광원의 광 무선 통신 기능 검증 (Verification of Optical Wireless Communication Functionality in Micro-LED Display Light Source Integrated with Field-effect Transistor)

  • In the past, display devices have undergone many changes, such as plasma TVs and LCDs, and have continued to develop. Recently, new display technologies, such as Organic Light Emitting Diode displays and Inorganic Light Emitting Diode displays, have been developed. Among them, Micro LED displays have the potential to improve performance more than LCDs and OLEDs, but a lot of effort and time are needed until the mass production technology (transfer and bonding) of Micro LED displays is developed. We have developed a new Micro LED display light source that can be produced using existing transfer and bonding process technologies to enable faster commercialization of Micro LED in the industry. This light source is TFT deposition on LED. TFT deposition on LED has the advantage of being able to produce displays using existing process technology, making early commercialization of display application products possible. In this study, we applied the Active Driving method to verify the performance of TFT deposition on LED as a display to determine its commercialization potential. Additionally, to facilitate faster application of Micro LED in the industry, we applied TFT deposition on LED to Optical Wireless Communication systems, which are widely used in application service areas such as safety/security and sensors, to verify its communication performance. The experimental results confirmed that TFT deposition on LED is not only capable of AM driving but can also be applied to OWC systems.

광섬유 수동정렬을 위한 단일 모드 대형 코어 폴리머 광도파로 (Large core polymeric single mode waveguide for passive fiber alignment)

  • 정력 오차 허용 범위를 증가 시켜서 효과적인 수동정렬이 가능토록 하기 위한 단일 모드 대형 코어 폴리머 광도파로를 구현하였다. 대형 코어 광도파로는 TEC(thermally expanded core) 광섬유의 모드와 일치하는 큰 도파모드를 가진다. 이로 인해 광섬유와 도파로의 정렬오차로 인한 모드 결합 손실을 줄일 수 있게 된다. 코어와 클래딩의 굴절률 차이가 5 ${\times}$ $10^{-4}$ 인 폴리머 재료를 이용하여 25 ${\times}$ 25 $\mu\textrm{m}$$^2$ 크기의 정사각형 광도파로를 제작하였으며 도파모드 관측결과 단일모드로 동작함을 확인하였다. 이와 같이 두꺼운 형태의 광도파로 구조 제작을 위하여 자외선 경화를 이용한 인젝션 몰딩(injection molding) 공정을 사용하였다. 제작된 광도파로 소자를 TEC 광섬유와 정렬연결을 할 때 정렬오차가 4.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ 까지 증가하더라도 삽입손실 증가는 0.5 dB 이하고 유지됨을 확인하였다.

테이퍼 구조를 이용한 플라즈모닉 도파로의 광학 특성 (Optical Characteristics of Plamonic Waveguide Using Tapered Structure)

  • We have investigated the optical properties of plamonic waveguide with tapered structure based on InP material for photonic integrated circuit(PIC). The proposed plasmonic waveguide is covered with the Ag thin film to generate the plasmonic wave on metallic interface. The optical characteristics of plasmonic waveguide were calculated using the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. The plasmonic waveguide was fabricated with the lengths of 2 to $10{\mu}m$ and the widths of 400 to 700 nm, respectively. The plasmonic mode and optical loss were measured. The optimum plasmonic length is $10{\mu}m$ and widths are 600 and 700 nm in the fabricated waveguide. This plasmonic waveguide can be directly integrated with other conventional optical devices and can be essential building blocks of PIC.

  • This paper proposes a compact, energy-efficient, and smart gas sensor platform technology for ubiquitous sensor network (USN) applications. The compact design of the platform is realized by employing silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology. The sensing element is fully integrated with SOI CMOS circuits for signal processing and communication. Also, the micro-hotplate operates at high temperatures with extremely low power consumption, which is important for USN applications. ZnO nanowires are synthesized onto the micro-hotplate by a simple hydrothermal process and are patterned by a lift-off to form the gas sensor. The sensor was operated at $200^{\circ}C$ and showed a good response to 100 ppb $NO_2$ gas.

  • We have developed a single integrated wavelengh selection type - 8channel light source module. This module oscillates in 8 wavelengh at 200GHz(1.6nm) ITU channel intervals within the c-band (1530~1560nm), and can transmit at 1.25Gbps level.

Bandwidth Improvement for a Photonic Crystal Optical Y-splitter

  • In this study, a wide-band photonic crystal Y-splitter for TE modes is proposed. A triangular lattice of air holes etched in a GaAs slab is used as the platform. In order to numerically analyze the structures, plane wave expansion (PWE) and finite difference time domain (FDTD) methods are used. In comparison with the structures reported in the literature, the proposed topology has a less complexity while it provides more than 100nm bandwidth. The simplicity of the design, its high transmission ratio and its wide bandwidth makes it a suitable choice for the implementation of photonic crystal integrated circuits.

단일광자 검출기 기술개발 동향 (Single Photon Detectors Technologies Development Trends for Quantum Information)

  • Single photon detector technologies have emerged as powerful tools in optical quantum information applications such as quantum communication, quantum information, and integrated quantum photonics. Owing to significant attempts in the previous decade at improving photon-counting detectors, several single photon detectors with high efficiency and low noise have been realized within the optical wavelength regime. In this paper, we provide an overview of current studies on single photon detectors operating at wavelengths from the ultraviolet to the infrared. In addition, we discuss applications of single photon detector technologies in quantum communication and integrated quantum photonics.
