  • A design process is difficult to describe comprehensively because a design problem has a multi-disciplinary nature and the design itself evolves as solutions are attempted by the designer. The process of design has been investigated in this paper with the purpose of characterizing the role that a system of this kind may have. In defining the system, an approach has been used that privileges the relationships with the existing CAD tools based on data exchange standards in course of definition today. Integrated design environment normally consists of a centralized data model a data management system and a set of CAD tools. In this study, all further investigations are directed towards the data management system, as one of the main components of the proposed environment. Moreover, product modeling, as a prerequisite for the data management core, is taken into special consideration.

  • To develop timely an optimal fan, a design system and a new manufacturing process used step by step have to be integrated. A small sized optimal fan for refrigerators, that was the goal on this project, was developed by the following principal processes. All processes are technologically linked in many directions: The existing fan was measured through reverse engineering. The measured data was used for the basic source of 3D design. The performance tests were carried and used as the data for the evaluation of the existing fan. Flow analysis by FANS-3D/sup [1]/ was performed at the given information (pressure drop and flow rate) to find out the configuration of optimal fan design. The flow patterns were investigated to measure the performance of fan through numerical experiment. The grid point data obtained by the above analysis turned into 3D high efficiency fan model by using CATIA. The product was manufactured by RP process (SLS, SLA) and tested the characteristic curves of the developed fan to compare with the existing fan. The modification of fan design were all examined to see any change in performance and checked to find any deficiency in assembling the fan into a duct. After the plastics flow analysis of the injection molding cycle to ensure acceptable quality fan, an optimal mold was processed by using tool-path for the newly designed fan.

  • The paper describes a formalisation of a Design for Safety methodology in an integrated envi-ronment, outlines early developments of a software tool, and presents the results of an appli-cation of the methodology to a case study. The approach adopted attempts link safety per-formance prediction through the utilisation of appropriate technical tools, safety assessment deriving from risk-based methodologies and disparate design activities and issues. Black-board systems have been utilised as the platform in the development of the integrated design environment, allowing safety assessment to become an integral part of the design process. Finally, the case study addresses the application of the developed methodology to three dif-ferent arrangements of a conventional passenger Ro-Ro vessel, with the aim to demonstrate the validity of the process and methodology adopted. The findings are presented and dis-cussed, and recommendations given for the way forward.

  • An entity-based integrated design model can be used to organize and represent information and activities involved in design. The model involves a number of product and process entities. Product entities describe design information, and process entities describe design activities. The relationships among entities Includes organizational, interaction, and sequence relationships. The paper focuses interaction relationships among design information. The interaction relationships can be represented as constraints. Types of constraints includes demand constraints, dependency constraints, and interaction constraints. The paper describes dependency and Interaction constraints. The concepts of representing and processing dependency and interaction constraints in an entity-based integrated design model are presented.

  • Necessity to address engineering system uncertainties in design processes has long been acknowledged. To obtain quality of product, a safety factor is traditionally used by many design engineers due to its easy of use and comprehension. However, the safety factor approach often yields either conservative or unreliable designs, since it ignores the type of probability distribution and the mechanism of uncertainty propagation from the input to the output. For a consistent reliability-based design, two fundamental issues must be investigated thoroughly. First, the design-decision process that clearly identifies a mechanism of uncertainty propagation under system uncertainties needs to be developed, which must be an efficient and accurate process. To identify the mechanism more effectively, an adaptive probability analysis is proposed by adaptively setting probability levels through a posteriori error estimation. The second is to develop the design process that not only yields a high quality design but also a cost-effective optimum design from manufacturing point of view. As a result, a response surface methodology is specially developed for RBDO, thus enhancing numerical challenges of efficiency and complicatedness. Side crashworthiness application is used to demonstrate the integrated design process for product and manufacturing process design.

  • In this paper, an offshore process front end engineering design (FEED) method is systematically introduced and reviewed to enable efficient offshore oil and gas production plant engineering. An integrated process engineering environment is also presented for the topside systems of a liquefied natural gas floating production, storage, and offloading (LNG FPSO) unit, based on the concepts and procedures for the process FEED of general offshore production plants. Various activities of the general process FEED scheme are first summarized, and then the offshore process FEED method, which is applicable to all types of offshore oil and gas production plants, is presented. The integrated process engineering environment is presented according to the aforementioned FEED method. Finally, the offshore process FEED method is applied to the topside systems of an LNG FPSO in order to verify the validity and applicability of the FEED method.

  • This paper describes an example of developing an integrated design system, Integrated Structural Design System for Reinforced Concrete Buildings(INDECON). INDECON incorporates a central database and three design modules: a preliminary design module(PDM), a structural analysis module(SAM), and a detailed design module(DDM). The development of INDECON begins with the development of design models including Design Object Model(DOM) which describes design data during the structural design process. The Design Object Model is transformed to Design Table Model(DTM) for the central database, and is specified to be in detail for the three design modules. Then the central database is implemented and managed by relational database management system(RDBMS), and the three design modules are implemented using C++ programming language. The central database in the server computer communicates with the design modules in the client computers using TCP/IP internet protocol. The developing procedure for INDECON in this paper can be applied for developing more comprehensive integrated structural design systems.

  • Existing BIM(Building Information Modeling) based energy evaluation tools cannot be utilized enough for the potential performance of BIM because most of them have not provided the integrated model for energy evaluation, assessment of the material, cost of the construction, and so on. This research aims to propose and develop a new application, EcoBIM, to support an integrated evaluation of the energy and cost efficiencies of the design alternatives within the design process. The proposed application functions as a BIM-based evaluation system that calculates energy-savings performance as well as the construction cost of the alternatives at the design stage. This study mainly focuses on the possibilities of developing the proposed technology. We also suggest an advanced design process using the proposed system, corresponding to changes of national regulations in Korea. This study deduce that EcoBIM can allow architects to make suitable decisions regarding energy- and cost-efficient designs. The proposed design process will allow architects not only to check the eco-friendly performance of design alternatives but also predict the operation cost in a certain period in the future. EcoBIM can prevent large-scale design changes required to obtain environmental certification and enable the owner to make an informed decision about the initial investment of construction according to the result of the analysis of the energy requirement at the design stage.
