Several vendors have recently been actively pursuing the development of integral pressurized water reactors (iPWRs) that range in power levels from small to large reactors. Integral reactors have the features of minimum vessel penetrations, passive heat removal after reactor shutdown, and modular construction that allow fast plant integration and a secure fuel cycle. The features of an integral reactor limit the options for placing control and safety system instruments. The development of instrumentation and control (I&C) strategies for a large 1,000 MWe iPWR is described. Reactor system modeling-which includes reactor core dynamics, primary heat exchanger, and the steam flashing drum-is an important part of I&C development and validation, and thereby consolidates the overall implementation for a large iPWR. The results of simulation models, control development, and instrumentation features illustrate the systematic approach that is applicable to integral light water reactors.
In this paper, we calculates mathematical model of ex-core neutron flux monitoring system for nuclear reactor and design the digital system using the bilinear transformations. The output pulse shape and resolving time of the system determines from the proposed method.
The reed switch position transmitter (RSPT) is used as a position indicator for the control rod in commercial nuclear power plants made by ABB-CE. But this position indicator has some problems when directly adopting it to the integral reactor. The Control Element Drive Mechanism (CEDM) for the integral reactor is designed to raise and lower the control rod in steps of 2mm in order to satisfy the design features of the integral reactor which are the soluble boron free operation and the use of a nuclear heating for the reactor start-up. Therefore the resolution of the position indicator for the integral reactor should be achieved to sense the position of the control rod more precisely than that of the RSPT of the ABB-CE. This paper adopts seismic resistance reed switches to the position indicator in order to reduce the damages or impacts during the handling of the position indicator and earthquake.
Metaheuristic algorithms can work well in solving or optimizing problems, especially those that require approximation or do not have a good analytical solution. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is one of these algorithms. The response quality of these algorithms depends on the objective function and its regulated parameters. The nonlinear nature of the pressurized light-water nuclear reactor (PWR) dynamics is a significant target for PSO. The two-point kinetics model of this type of reactor is used because of fission products properties. The proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is intended to control the power level of the PWR at a short-time transient. The absolute error (IAE), integral of square error (ISE), integral of time-absolute error (ITAE), and integral of time-square error (ITSE) objective functions have been used as performance indexes to tune the PID gains with PSO. The optimization results with each of them are evaluated with the number of function evaluations (NFE). All performance indexes achieve good results with differences in the rate of over/under-shoot or convergence rate of the cost function, in the desired time domain.
A marine reactor shows very different thermal-hydraulic characteristics compared to a land- based reactor. Especially, study on the variation of flow field due to ship motions such as inclination, heaving and rolling is essential since the flow variation has great influence on the reactor cooling capability. In this study, the natural circulation characteristics of integral type marine reactor with modular steam generators were analyzed using computational fluid dynamics code, CFX-4, for inclined conditions. The numerical analyses are performed using the results of natural circulation experiments for integral reactor which are already conducted at Seoul National University. From the results, it was found that the flow rate in the ascending steam generator cassettes increases due to buoyancy effect. Due to this flow variation, temperature difference occurs at the outlets of the each steam generator cassettes. which is mitigated through downcomer by thermal mixing. Also, around the upper pressure header the flow from descending hot leg goes up to the ascending steam generator cassettes due to large natural circulation driving force in ascending steam generator cassettes. From this result, the increase of How rate in the ascending steam generator cassettes could be understood qualitatively.
The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of three sets of traditional control methods (proportional, integral, and proportional - integral controls) through lab-scale biological reactor experiments. An increase in proportional gain ($K_c$) resulted in reduced dissolved oxygen (DO) offset under proportional control. An increase in integral time ($T_i$) resulted in a slower response in DO concentration with less oscillation, but took longer to get to the set point. P-I control showed more stable and efficient control of DO and airflow rates compared to either proportional control or integral control. Developed P-I control system was successfully applied to lab-scale Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) for treating industrial wastewater with high organic strength.
Main coolant pump (MCP) is a canned-motor-type axial pump to circulate the primary coolant between nuclear fuel rods and steam generators in an integral type reactor. The reactor is designed to operate under condition of 310 oC and 14.7 MPa. Thus MCP has to be tested under same operating condition as reactor design condition in order to verify its performance and safety. In present work, a test loop to simulate real operating situation of the reactor has been designed and constructed to test MCP. And then, as a part of qualification test, canned motor functional test and pump hydraulic performance test have been carried out upon a prototype MCP. Canned motor efficiency and pump hydraulic characteristics including homologous curves and NPSH curves were obtained from the qualification test.
This paper presents an observer-based chattering free robust optimal control scheme to regulate the total power of a nuclear reactor. The non-linear model of nuclear reactor is linearized around a steady state operating point to obtain a linear model for which an optimal second order integral sliding mode controller is designed. A second order integral sliding mode observer is also designed to estimate the unmeasurable states. In order to avoid the chattering effect, the discontinuous input of both observer and controller are designed using the super-twisting algorithm. The proposed controller is realized by combining an optimal linear tracking controller with a second order integral sliding mode controller to ensure minimum control effort and robustness of the closed-loop system in the presence of uncertainties. The condition for the selection of gains of discontinuous control based on the super-twisting algorithm is derived using a strict Lyapunov function. Performance of the proposed observer based control scheme is demonstrated through non-linear simulation studies.
Conventional integral effect test facilities were constructed to enable the precise observation of thermal-hydraulic phenomena and reactor behaviors under postulated accident conditions to prove reactor safety. Although these facilities improved the understanding of thermal-hydraulic phenomena and reactor safety, applications of new technologies and their performance tests have been limited owing to the cost and large scale of the facilities. Various nuclear technologies converging 4th industrial revolution technologies such as artificial intelligence, drone, and 3D printing, are being developed to improve plant management strategies. Additionally, new conceptual passive safety systems are being developed to enhance reactor safety. A new integral effect test facility having a noticeable scaling ratio, i.e., the (UNIST reactor innovation loop (URI-LO), is designed and constructed to improve the technical quality of these technologies by performance and feasibility tests. In particular, the URI-LO, which is constructed using a transparent material, enables better visualization and provides physical insights on multidimensional phenomena inside the reactor system. The facility design based on three-level approach is qualitatively validated with preliminary analyses, and its functionality as a test facility is confirmed through a series of experiments. The design feature, design validation, functionality test, and future utilization of the URI-LO are introduced.
A new advanced integral reactor of 330 MWt capacity named SMART(System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor) is currently under development at KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute). One of the major design features of the integral reactor is locating the steam generators(SG) inside reactor vessel and eliminating the possibility of LB LOCA(large Break Loss of Coolant Accident). Orifices are fitted at the low part of steam generator cassette to stabilize and balance coolant flow distribution in the MCP (Main Circulation Pump) pressure header. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to determine the optimum orifice size using computer code 'CFX'.
