Ramjet Mode Combustion Test for a Dual-Mode Ramjet Engine Model with a Large Backward-Facing Step (큰 후향 계단이 있는 이중 모드 램젯 엔진 모델의 램젯 모드 연소 시험)

  • Ramjet mode combustion test was performed for a dual-mode ramjet engine model. The engine model consists of an air intake, a combustor and a nozzle. The combustor in the model has a large backward-facing step, designed to be used as a part of a rocket-based combined cycle engine. The test was performed at the flight speed of Mach 5 and the altitude of 24 km. Strong combustion was established only when the fuel was injected from both of the bottom-side and cowl-side wall. When the total fuel stoichiometric ratio was 1.0, distributed as 0.5 on the cowl side and 0.5 on the bottom side, the flow became subsonic at some portion in the combustor by thermal choking, i.e., ramjet mode was established for this condition.

An Experimental Study on the Two Stage Ignition of Cool Flame and Hot Flame in HCCI Engine According to Fuel Composition (연료조성에 따른 HCCI 엔진의 냉염 및 열염의 2단연소 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • As the environmental pollution becomes serious global problem, the regulation of emission exhausted from automobiles is strengthened. Therefore, it is very important to know how to reduce the NOx and PM simultaneously in diesel engines, which has lot of merits such as high thermal efficiency, low fuel consumption and durability. By this reason, the new concept called as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI) engines are spotlighted because this concept reduced NOx and P.M. simultaneously. However, it is well known that HCCI engines increased HC and CO. Thus, the investigation of combustion characteristics which consists cool and hot flames for HCCI engines were needed to obtain the optimal combustion condition. In this study, combustion characteristics for direct injection type HCCI engine such as quantity of cool flame and hot flame, ignition timing and ignition delay were investigated to clarify the effects of these parameters on performance. The results revealed that diesel combustion showed the two-stage ignition of cool flame and hot flame, the rate of cool flame increase and hot flame decrease with increasing intake air temperature. On the other hand, the gasoline combustion is the single-stage ignition and ignition timing is near the TDC. In addition mixed fuel combustion showed different phenomenon, which depends on the ratio of gasoline component. Ignition timing of mixed fuel is retarded near the TDC and the ignition delay is increased according to ratio of gasoline.

  • This paper presents the development status of a subscale precooled turbojet engine "S-engine" for the hypersonic cruiser and space place. S-engine employs the precooled-cycle using liquid hydrogen as fuel and coolant. It has $23cm{\times}23cm$ of rectangular cross section, 2.6 m of the overall length and about 100 kg of the target weight employing composite materials for a variable-geometry rectangular air-intake and nozzle. The design thrust and specific impulse at sea-level-static(SLS) are 1.2 kN and 2,000 sec respectively. After the system design and component tests, a prototype engine made of metal was manufactured and provided for the system firing test using gaseous hydrogen in March 2007. The core engine performance could be verified in this test. The second firing test using liquid hydrogen was conducted in October 2007. The engine, fuel supplying system and control system for the next flight test were used in this test. We verified the engine start-up sequence, compressor-turbine matching and performance of system and components. A flight test of S-engine is to be conducted by the Balloon-based Operation Vehicle(BOV) at Taiki town in Hokkaido in October 2008. The vehicle is about 5 m in length, 0.55 m in diameter and 500 kg in weight. The vehicle is dropped from an altitude of 40 km by a high-altitude observation balloon. After 40 second free-fall, the vehicle pulls up and S-engine operates for 60 seconds up to Mach 2. High altitude tests of the engine components corresponding to the BOV flight condition are also conducted.

  • The internal flow of a pump system that is installed in the interior of large vessels such as tankers is largely affected by the water level and flow conditions of the pump sump. However, the performance of the pump is generally evaluated with the consideration of only the performance of the pump itself, without considering the pumping station operating environment. Therefore, if the pump is affected by the incoming flow that exhibits vortex and swirl, the occurrence of vortex and swirl accompanied with air may cause problems with the pump sump. This effect of flow condition can lead to a decrease in efficiency, increase in vibration, and noise generation in the pump. In this study, to investigate the internal flow of the pump sump according to several water levels, a pump sump scale-model was designed and constructed. The frequency of vortex occurrence and the shape of the vortex were investigated according to the different water levels of a fundamental test. The Class C vortex type, which has a larger volume of air intake to the pump, was confirmed by the higher occurrence frequency at a relatively lower water level.

  • This paper is a purpose to Analyze and study the failure examples for a engine oil leakage of camshaft bearing seal, poor contact by computer connector fin damage and vaporizer inferiority on LPG automotive. The first example, when the researcher disassembled the cylinder head of engine to establish the cause for oil leakage, he confirmed the engine oil leakage by damaged between the engine intake camshaft bearing and seal part. The second example, the connector fin of power source line that control the starting of a car supplied with engine computer. As a result, it found the fact that the engine operation stopped because of cutting of the power source by connector fin damage. The third example, it verified the engine incongruity phe cutting of the power source by connector fin damage. The third example, it verified the engine incongruity phenomenon as thd gas didn't flow the vaporizer by foreign substance deposit. Finally, it supplied a small quantity gas from vaporizer to mix. As the computer controlling mix opening condition supplied a air as opening signal, the air and fuel became rarefied state. it knew that the engine didn't produce prpper power. Therefore, a car have to throughtly inspect not in order to arise the failure symptoms.

Comparison of growth, condition index and mortality of manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) between originated from China (Liaoning Dandong) and Chungnam (Taean) in Gochang tidal flats (고창 갯벌에서 중국산 및 충남산 바지락의 성장, 비만도 및 폐사 특성 비교)

  • In this study, we transplanted Chinese (Liaoning Dandong) and Chungnam (Taean) manila clam seeds to Gochang tidal flats in Jeonbuk province, and compared growth, mortality, and condition indices from May 2015 to August 2016. Within 2 months after transplantation, clam mortality of Chungnam and Chinese origin were $6.9{\pm}4.3%$, $16.9{\pm}7.9{\sim}21.0{\pm}6.3%$, respectively. We supposed that higher mortality of Chinese manila clams might be due to higher stress and weakening of physiological functions by air-exposure and unavailability of food intake for 5 days harvesting, transportation, quarantine procedures. Unlike the local clam farmer's opinion based on their field experience, growth of Chungnam clams in shell length and total weight were a little better than Chinese without statistical significant difference (P > 0.05). Condition indices of Chinese clams showed declining tendency after reaching a peak in May 2014, and in June 2015, respectively. Meanwhile, Chungnam clams has reached its peak of condition indices in May 2014 and in April 2015, respectively. From this result, we supposed that there might be at least one month difference in reproduction between the Chinese and Chungnam manila clams during the first-transplanted year. Because the mortality of adult clam have sharply increased from June 2015 (due to high temperature, few rainfall and spawning) in Gochang tidal flat, it would be recommendable that farmers harvest the clams before June when its shell length are larger than 40 mm. In conclusion, we could directly compare the productivity of Chinese and Chungnam manila clam at Gochang tidal flats by field experiment, and these results are also meaningful to manila clam farmers.

Effects of Sodium Bicarbonate and Vitamin Supplementation on Milk Production and Composition in Lactating Holstein Cows Under Heat Stress Condition (고온기에 있어서 중조와 Vitamin 급여가 착유우의 산유량 및 유조성분 변화에 미치는 효과)

  • Sixteen multiparous lactating Holstein cows were used to compare effects of supplementing 1)no additive(Control), 2)1.2% sodium bicarbonate(NaHCO3); 3)niacin(80g/d), 4)vitamin A+E (140,000IU+1000IU) on feed intake, milk production, milk composition and somatic cell counts during the summer months. Insofar as possible, treatment groups were balanced for lactation number and days in milk. Cows were fed a diet of 9.1kg DM of concentrate and 10.2kg DM of corn silage. Daily maximum air temperature in free stall barn was 35℃ for 3 days of the pretreatment periods and decreased gradually up to 27℃ during the treatment periods of 15days. Dry matter intake of corn silage was higher(p<0.05) for cows consuming NaHCO3 than those not consuming NaHCO3. Daily milk production for niacin and vitamin A+E supplementations resulted in significant(p<0.001) increase in milk production from 3 day of trials than control and NaHCO3. Milk fat percentage tended(p=0.09) to increase and milk lactose percentage was increased significantly(p<0.001) for cows supplemented with NaHCO3, niacin and vitamin A+E. Milk protein percentages was higher significantly(p<0.05) with supplemental niacin and somatic cell counts was higher significantly(p<0.001) with supplemental vitamin A+E. These data strongly suggest that supplementation of NaHCO3, niacin or vitamin A+E should be increased for improving milk production and mammary gland health of dairy cows under heat stress.

Effects of Higher Dietary Cation with or without Protected Fat and Niacin on the Milk Yield and Thermoregulatory Ability in Holsteins During Summer Heat Stress (여름철 고온스트레스 기간에 고 양이온 사료와 반추위 보호지방과 나이아신의 추가공급시 착유우의 유생산 및 체온조절에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) with or without ruminally protected fat and niacin on the thermoregulatory ability, milk yield and milk composition of lactating dairy cows during summer in Korea. Thirty mid-lactating Holstein cows (134±12.4 DIM and 23.4±2.3kg/d of milk yield) were divided into three groups (10 animals/group). Cows were housed in a free-stall barn and were provided with forced- air ventilation (wind velocity = 4 m/s) using 41 cm diameter fans. Diet one was formulated to contain low DCAD (+15 DCAD) while the remaining two diets were higher in DCAD (+30 DCAD). One higher DCAD diet was formulated to contain by-pass fat and the second higher DCAD diet contained the niacin along with by-pass fat. The maximum ambient temperature during July was 28.5℃ which could be seen as a period of mild heat stress. As summer progressed, August was characterized as a severe heat stress condition with maximum ambient temperature (32.4℃) and THI (74.0). Dry matter, crude protein and total digestible nutrients intake was not affected by the DCAD level and supplementation of ruminally protected fat or niacin. Milk production was higher in cows fed diets supplemented with fat and niacin than those fed un-supplemented diet. No difference in milk yield was observed in cows fed diets supplemented with fat or niacin plus fat. Milk fat and rectal temperature were not affected by the DCAD level and supplementation of ruminally protected fat or niacin. However, respiration rate was decreased in cows fed diets supplemented with either fat or fat and niacin compared to those fed. The results of the present study indicated that higher DCAD (+30) and supplementation of fat along with niacin can somehow mitigate the negative effects of heat stress on milk yield and physiology of lactating Holsteins during July and August in Korea. In present study reduced respiration rate and increased milk yield in lactating cows may be attributed to the cooling effect of supplemented fat along with vasodilatory functions of niacin. Effect of Various Forms of Floor System on Performance of Meat-type Duck and Environments of Duck House (오리사 바닥 형태가 육용오리의 생산성 및 사육환경에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of floor type and heating system on performance, housing environment and health status of ducks reared in three types of duck house (OD : Open floor house-Direct heating system, OF : Open floor house-Floor heating system and LD : Loft type house-Direct heating system). In OF treatment, PVC pipes were installed for heating under concrete floor and covered with litter. In LD treatment, plastic mesh was installed 50 cm above the floor so that duck's droppings can pass through it. Each treatment had four replicates of 25 birds (Cherry Valley duck breed) per pen. There were no significant differences in weight gain and feed intake of ducks for 6 weeks among all treatments. However, feed conversion ratio in LD was significantly higher (p<0.05) than that in OF. No differences were found in carcass charac- teristics, with the exception of abdominal fat weight where OF were higher than the others. Concentrations of $CO_2$ and $NH_3$ gas in OD were higher than those of OF and LD at 3, 4 and 5 weeks. Moisture content in litter of OF was lower than that of OD. In contrast, the amount of dust in the air was higher in OF than in OD. The amount of fuel used for 6 weeks in LD was lower about 21% than that in OD. Some of unusual symptoms were observed in open floor house and loft type house, such as lying, spraddle legged, twisted ankle and legs, wounded sole, or etc. No components of leukocyte and erythrocyte of blood were significantly different among all treatments. The results of this experiment showed that OF and LD systems had no positive effects on performance of meat type commercial duck. However, there were some positive effects of certain house type for the improvement of environmental condition in duck house for hygienic production. In the future, more research on the effect of various facilities and systems for duck house is needed.
