  • This study investigates the Horizontal surface discharge characteristics of solid insulators by varying their materials, and the dew-point of dry-air. The methodology of this study is that a quasi-uniform field is first applied to a test chamber. Then, the chamber is filled with dry-air as an insulation gas which pressure is varied from 1 to 6atm while applying an AC voltage to the chamber. The used solid insulators are teflon, polyethlene and polyurethane. As the dew-point is lower and the pressure of dry-air is higher, the flashover voltage of all solid insulators increases more. When each characteristic of the solid insulators is compared under the same gas pressure, the flashover voltage of teflon is the highest. Then, the flashover voltage of polyethlene is higher than that of polyurethane. Moreover, it is observed that the flashover voltage increases as the horizontal distance between the electrodes of each solid insulator become larger, respectively. However, as the pressure is increased, flashover voltage of the solid insulators is saturated. Therefore, selection of cost-effective insulation is needed in order to appropriate pressure.

The methodology of this study is that a quasi-uniform field is first applied to a test chamber. Then, the chamber is filled with dry-air as an insulation gas which pressure is varied from 1 to 6atm while applying an AC voltage to the chamber. The used solid insulators are teflon, polycarbonate, and bakelite. As the dew-point is lower and the pressure of dry-air is higher, the flashover voltage of all solid insulators increases more. When each characteristic of the solid insulators is compared under the same gas pressure, the flashover voltage of teflon is the highest. Then, the flashover voltage of polycarbonate is higher than that of bakelite. Moreover, it is observed that the flashover voltage increases as the diameter and the thickness of each solid insulator become larger and thicker, respectively. However, the thickness of the solid insulators is more critical for increasing the flashover voltage than their diameter.

  • In this paper, the automatic device for measuring the salt contamination on insulators was developed. The device consists of electronic insulators, measuring system, monitoring system, and printer. It was shown that the level of salt contamination measured by the developed device is similar to that measured by the brush cleaning method. Therefore, the developed automatic measuring device can be used in field, in order to predict the cleaning time of insulators and prevent the failure due to the salt contamination.

  • Insulators contaminated by salt particles may cause flashovers in humid climate or light rain. Therefore, the quantity of salt on insulators should be monitored not to exceed a critical value. We propose a new remote sensing technique to measure the quantity of salt on insulators of power systems. The amount of the salt is measured from the intensity of the spontaneous emission from the sodium atoms. In this paper, a compact remote on-line salt-meter composed of Q Switch pulsed Nd:YAG laser and emission signal detection system will be introduced. And as the first result of this study, the operating characteristics of our developing laser system is also introduced.

  • FRP(Fiber Reinforced Plastic) support insulators for DC(direct current) were developed and their electrical and mechanical characteristics were investigated. Electrical tests were carried out to measure flashover voltages under common use frequency condition. Tensile and bending tests were performed for the mechanical characteristics. The test results showed that FRP support insulators have superior voltage resistances and strengths to porcelain insulators. Field test also is carried out to measure adaptation and to compensate the defect. The test result showed that a new product has no defect in electrical and mechanical.

  • The ageing cause in many porcelain suspension insulators which occur on transmission and distribution line with dead-end stings is mechanical stress in interface between porcelain and cement materials. It is known that the principal mechanical stress which give electrical failure is the results of the displacement is due to cement growth. We studied an analysing method to find out a deformation of brittle porcelain with a thermal expansion of cement for suspension insulator. These simulation analysis and experimental results show that cement volume growths affect severely to be mechanical failure ageing. These simulation analysis and experimental results show that axial loading affects of Porcelain insulators severely to be mechanical failure ageing.

  • It is believed that the pre-flashover phenomena would play a very important role in the procedure of the flashover in the interface between the insulators and vacuum. This paper is mainly concerned on the pre-flashover phenomena of Alumina insulators in vacuum. There are 24 different types of alumina insulators were tested with a $0.7/4{\mu}s$ pulsed voltage under a $1{\times}10^{-4}Pa$ vacuum. The observed pre-flashover phenomena were classified and the pre-flashover characteristics were concluded. It is useful to study further on the flashover mechanism in vacuum.

  • Since th three sides of korea peninsula are surrounded by the sea, electric apparatus are greatly contaminated by the salt generated by the typhoon, seasonal wind, sea wind and sea fog. This contamination causes electric power apparatus to fail. Thus in this paper, we investigated to influence upon electrical properties of outdoor insulators with non-uniformity contamination in the experimental condition because The contamination of outdoor insulator highly depended wind property In the service condition, insulator was not uniformly contaminated. From the flashover test for the 254 mm suspension insulator, we could determine the influence non-uniform contamination on the electrical property of insulators. Through the experiment, we convinced to occur flashover from non-uniform contamination region of outdoor insulator. Contaminated area and pattern has a close relationship with the electrical properties of outdoor insulator.

  • Recently composite insulators are being used for outdoor high voltage applications. Composite insulators for transmission line have significant advantages over porcelain insulators, especially for ultra-high voltage. Their advantages are light weight, vandalism resistance, and hydrophobicity. We developed a 170kV high reliable vertical break disconnector with good long term electrical and mechanical performance which was achieved by the improvement of electrical performance and light weight. We discuss the outline of the development and the product.

  • The suspension insulators are subjected to harsh environment in service for a long time. Long term reliability of the insulators is required for both mechanical and electrical performances. We studied HRB characteristics to find out a deformation of suspension porcelain with alumina contents. These experimental results show that HRB intensity was affected severely by alumina contents, and the propagation properties was affected mainly by a distribution and shape of micro pores on porcelain samples.
