Accidents caused by water absorption in water-cooled generator stator windings often occur all over the world. The absorption into the insulator of the coolant, which is used to cool down the heat generated by stator windings during operation, leads to the deterioration of dielectric strength, and insulation breakdown. An insulation breakdown may cause not only an enormous economic loss but also a very serious grid accident that would compromise stable supply of electric power. More than 50 % of domestic generators have been in operation for more than 15 years, and water absorption tests performed on 50 water-cooled generator stator windings during a five-year planned preventive maintenance period beginning in 2006 identified water absorption problems in 10 of them, all of which required repair. Because the existing water absorption test detects this problem by utilizing stochastic methods after measuring the capacitances at the final positions of insulation breakdown, its accuracy is limited. This study demonstrates that water absorption can be more accurately diagnosed by utilizing method along with a more precise one.

In hydro-generator, a groundwall insulation of stator windings gradually deteriorates due to mechanical, thermal, electrical and environmental stresses. These stresses combine to result in loose windings, delamination of the stator insulation and/or electrical tracking of the end winding, all of which can lead to stator insulation failures. Conventionally, off-line tests such as partial discharge measurement, DC/AC current test and ${\Delta}tan{\delta}$ test has been used for estimation of winding condition. However, off-line test requires large power supply and generator outage. In addition, major cause of insulation problems such as loose wedges and slot discharges may not be found with off-line diagnoses. This paper describes the on-line partial discharge measurement techniques in the generator stator windings. The experimental results from the UIAM #1 hydro-generator confirms a optimistic application of on-line generator diagnosis method as a reliable tool for evaluation of winding condition.
The preventive diagnosis technique for power system is being highlighted as a research area for deterioration of insulation in machinery because of high-voltage power system. We make efforts to develop not only diagnosis of aging state but also detection of defects in the initial stage from preventive diagnosis technique. Especially, partial discharge is actively studied as a non-destructive diagnosis technique and very useful because partial discharge measurement reduces damage than conventional diagnosis technique. The loaded stress during this test is smaller than that of other diagnosis techniques. But the continuous research for various complicated analysis method is required because partial discharge has very small signals and its signals have complex forms. In this paper, the measurement of partial discharge was investigated and studied on many specimens with void. We made samples having artificial voids and measured partial discharge. In order to use as a practical diagnosis technique, we studied ways of measurement, measured illustrations and types of partial discharge which could be used in order to diagnose defects of power machinery.

This paper presents few case studies of state diagnosis of XLPE cables using very low frequency techniques. The power cables of 22.9kV which have installation fault were assessed using VLF technique in addition to other techniques like insulation resistance and DC voltage withstand test. From the experimental results, The dielectric loss($tan{\delta}$) values of degradation of the cable(joint, knife, needle) at $U_0$ were 5.839, 5.526 and 6.251, respectively and all values were "further study advised". VLF PD measurement was also found defective portion. These method was effective in defect to fault in the degradation of the cable. However, the breakdown did not occur in the degradation of the cable because of properties of XLPE insulation. Few case studies of using VLF $tan{\delta}$ diagnosis for fault are measured and analyzed. The $tan{\delta}$ values at $U_0$ were "further study advised" or "action required".
Recently many research activities on the diagnosis of stator winding insulation of large rotating machines have been reported. Capacitive couplers are widely used as sensors for on-line partial discharge (PD) measurement of high voltage rotating machines. This paper presents laboratory test to compare Stator Slot Coupler (SSC), Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD), 80 [pF] coupler and 500 [pF] coupler for on-line PD measurement of rotating machines.

To assess the condition of stator insulation, nondestructive and overpotential tests were performed on four high voltage motors. The stator windings under these tests have nominal ratings of 6.6 kV. After completing nondestructive tests, the AC overvoltage applied to the stator windings was gradually increasing until insulation failure in order to obtain the breakdown voltage. No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 of 6.6 kV motors failed near rated voltage of 18.4 kV, 19.8 kV, 19.7 kV and 21.7 kV, respectively. The breakdown voltage of four motors was higher that expected for good quality coils(14.2 kV) in 6.6 kV motors. Almost all of failures were located in a line-end coil at the exit from the core slot. The breakdown voltages and the types of defects showed strong relation to the stator insulation tests such as in the case of AC current, dissipation factor($tan{\delta}$) and partial discharge magnitude.

In this paper, sample coils for stator form-wound winding of traction motor were made for the accelerative thermal degradation composed of heat, vibration, moisture and overvoltage. In progress of test periods, diagnosis tests such as insulation resistance, dielectric loss and partial discharge were investigated. Reliability and expected life were evaluated on the insulation system for 200 class traction motor considering various environmental stress.

A corrosion detecting system for 22.9 kV distribution power line insulation cable, which can travel autonomously along the live line, is proposed. Eddy current test method is employed to detect the corrosion, and the system developed here is capable of detecting internal corrosion of a ACSR-OC. Somewhat details of the electrical and mechanical mechanism of the system and traveling algorithm are introduced. Experimental results applied to the sample cables having artificial corrosion and the operating distribution lines are provided. From the result, we confirmed that the system is useful for detecting internal corrosion of a ACSR, and is expected to be a new non-destructive testing equipment in the area of diagnosis for the distribution power line.
This paper identifies these data by the data diagnosis in lognormal distribution and presents the method to obtain exact parameter estimates and confidence intervals of regression line. The life-stress relationship uses Arrhenius model and life data generate Class-H insulation complete data by simulation. Also, the method to estimate parameters uses least squares estimation and externally Studentized residuals can be used as test statistics for identifing outliers. And influential cases are identified by Cook's distance. This research is intended to obtain the useful information for the life of products and test method, to save time and costs, and to help optimum accelerated life test plans.

On-line partial discharge(PD) diagnostic system is the most prominent systems to diagnose insulation condition for the high voltage rotating machines. Partial discharge measuring system(PDMS) series with ceramic coupler(PD detecting sensor) installed hydro generator and high voltage motor have been measured the PD data for many years. The trend of PD magnitude in the on-line PD system increased for some machines. These machines showed a same result in the conventional off-line PD test and PD magnitude decreased after stator winding insulation cleaning. This case study show that PDMS has been proved to be good results by comparing PD magnitude with on-line and off-line PD test and it is important to plan the maintenance project for the hydro generator stator winding because PD value was decreased after insulation cleaning.
