The purpose of this study was to verify a Structural Equation Model that constructed the causations among the structural leisure constraints, interpersonal leisure constraints, intrapersonal leisure constraints, leisure motivation, leisure activity participation, leisure satisfaction and the quality of life from the ecological perspective. The respondents were 301 elderly people residing in 4 free institutionalized elderly homes in Seoul. The data were analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis and covariance structure analysis using USREL 8.0 ver. The major results are summarized as follows: 1) Statistically, a goodness of fit is good of structural equation model presented in the study. 2) The structural leisure constraints and the interpersonal leisure constraints are some types of leisure environment of the aged in public homes from the ecological perspective. Such constraints would inevitably lead to a direct effect on individual leisure life and leisure motivation. 3) The important valuable factor which affected the leisure satisfaction and the quality of life in the elderly was the leisure motivation.
Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effect of multidimensional program on cognition, physical function and depression among institutionalized elderly and the relationship between study variables and resident's characteristics and health related variables. Method: This study involved a one group pre and post test, comparison of variables over a 12 month period. To investigate this research question, data of 114 residents of a nursing home were analyzed. Results: There was statistically significant difference in MMSE-K (t=-2.63, p=.010), ADL (t=-2.85, p=.005), and depression (t=4.66, p=.000) before and after program participation. Conclusion: These results indicate that, for a year their regular involvement in a broad spectrum of multidimensional program activities can improve in cognitive, physical and emotional perspectives, but the level of IADL decreased significantly (t=-6.72, p=.000). Further testing is required with the control group, to compare with community resident elders in order to explore the effects on social skill of elderly.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine and evaluate the effects of auricular acupressure on musculoskeletal pain, depression and sleep of the elderly who are institutionalized in long-term care facilities. Methods: The research was conducted in a non-equivalent control group and non-synchronized design with data collected from October to December, 2016. The subjects were from long-term care facilities for the elderly in D city and divided into an experimental group (24 subjects) and a control group (25 subjects). Results: After the intervention, the experimental group showed significant improvement in degree of musculoskeletal pain on time ($x^2=23.89$, p<.001) and degree of depression on time and group ($x^2=37.42$, p<.001, U=122.0, p<001) and degree of sleep on time ($x^2=33.62$, p<.001). Thus, the suggested hypothesis is partially supported. Conclusion: Auricular acupressure therapy is expected to be a practical and efficient nursing intervention for the elderly institutionalized in long-term care facilities.
This study was conducted to provide insight into the management and care of the elderly in nursing homes. Eighty-six elderly subjects over 65 years old (38 male, 48 female) in 3 non-fee-paying nursing homes, located in Daejeon and Chungchong areas, were studied. Subjects'dietary intakes by estimated food intake records, and self-perceived health conditions, were studied using questionnaires from July 21 to August 1, 1997. Twenty-one % of the male subjects and 42% of the female subjects were over 80 years. Their predominant past occupation was farming. While 8.3% of the female and no male residents showed a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 27 and above, about 30% of the subjects were underweight and in poor health status in seeing, joint pains, lumbago and shoulder pains. Regarding overall health status, 72.1% of the subjects considered them to be in poor health, and female and male subjects suffered more difficulties from cloudy eyes, joint pains and lumbago and shoulder pains than any other. Neuralgia was the predominant chronic complaint and followed by hypertension in both sexes. Overall, female subjects felt worse off than the male subjects in terms of their health status, that can be attributed to higher average age of the female subjects compared to the male subjects. The elderly were eating a very low fat (about 15 g : 6% of total calorie) diet with low vitamin A and E. Intakes of calories, protein and iron slightly exceeded RDA. The phosphorus intake was more than double the RDA although calcium intake was close to the RDA. From these results, it seems important to doubling the fat intake of the elderly residents in the form of vegetable fat with the object of raising of vitamin E, antioxidant vitamin, and essential fatty acids for the elderly. It is also recommended that the elderly residents should be given adequate calcium and exercise for bone health.
The purposes of this study were to 1) develop fluid intake enhancing program for the institutionalized elderly and 2) examine the effect of fluid intake enhancing program on amount of daily fluid consumed, urine specific gravity, and urine color. Data were collected from 39 nursing home residents in a nursing home located in urban Chung-chung providence. With a convenient sample of 39 nursing home residents, consecutive three days of 24 hour fluid intake, were measured and recorded. Urine samples were obtained and urine specific gravity, urine color were analyzed at pre-intervention, 4 weeks, and 6 weeks following the intervention. When compared to pre-intervention, the average amount of daily fluid intake was significantly increased at 4 weeks and 6 weeks following the intervention. The proportion of subjects who consumed less than Adequate Intake(AI) was 35.9% at pre-intervention and was decreased to 10.3%, 7.7%. In conclusion, inadequate fluid intake among institutionalized elderly is prevalent. From careful employment of the fluid intake enhancing program, increase in fluid consumption among institutionalized elderly can be expected.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the changes of physical function, perceptual and cognitive function, emotional function, and functional independence in the institutionalized aged according to functional group activity program (self help Tai Chi exercise plus functional task). Methods: Study subjects were 20 institutionalized aged from June to October in 2010. The subjects received functional group activity program two times a week for 15 weeks. Physical function (grip strength, coordination, lower extremity strength, balance, gait, trunk flexibility), perceptual and cognitive function, emotional function(depression, social skill), and functional independence were measured before and after the program. Results: The subjects showed significantly increased physical function (coordination, lower extremity strength, gait, trunk flexibility), perceptual and cognitive function, emotional function (depression, social skill), and functional independence. The functional group activity program may be an effective strategy for institutionalized elders to enhance their functions. Conclusion: The functional group activity program may be effective on elderly institutions which have limitation in human, material, environmental resources.

The purpose of this study is to investigate current problems of dining space in Korean elderly welfare facility. De-institutionalizing dining environment of elderly welfare facility will bring more meaningful social interactions among elderly users. Methods : Through literature research and case studies of welfare centers in the US and Japan, Elderly Dining Space Checklist was developed. Dining spaces of 11 welfare facilities in Seoul was analyzed by this checklist. It was administered by interior designers as well as facility staffs to achieve more credible results. Questionnaire for the elderly users of those dining space also prosecuted to broaden knowledge for creating improved environment. Results : Dining spaces of elderly welfare centers are lack of privacy and furnitures are not comfortable enough for the general users as well as wheelchair users. Elderly dining space users are seeking more private and comfortable spaces for the social communications. Implications : Dining environment for the elderly in Korea should develop more de-institutionalized design concepts.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between communication skills and self-esteem of the elderly living in public institutions, this study divided the communication skill of the aged into 5 subsidiary factors such as self-understanding, attentive listening, clear expression of intention, expression of personal feeling, and self-disclosure so as to grasp the relation between each variables and self-esteem and to search suggestions. For the methodology, senior citizens aged above 65 living in public institutions in Gangwon province (1 in Chuncheon, 1 in Wonjoo and 1 in Gangneung) were surveyed totaling 123 documents were analyzed for this study. The following are the results: First, the difference in communication skills, in the demographic and sociological characteristics are found to show significant difference in hobbies, religion, allowance and the most reliable person. Second, self-esteem, in the demographic and sociological characteristics, showed significant difference according to religion, whether the person pays his/her living expenses, hobbies and health conditions. Third, communication skills tend to influence self-esteem that an elderly with more self-esteem is shown to have higher communication skills. They should be recommended with religion life, hobbies life and providing sufficient allowance, pay his/her own life expenses.
Purpose: The purpose was to identify the effects of a Tai Chi exercise program on physical fitness, fall related perception and health status among institutionalized elderly. Methods: A quasi-experimental research was carried out with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. There were 23 subjects in the experimental group and 24 in the control group. The data was gathered by structured questionnaires about fall related perception, and health status. Physical fitness was measured by an exercise therapist with a blind principle. Results: At the completion of the 12 weeks Tai Chi exercise program, flexibility (F=4.50, p=.00), and ability to balance (F=3.27, p=.00) had increased significantly. Fall related perception showed significant improvement in the fear of falling (F=-3.52, p=.00). Physical functioning (F=3.38, p=.00), role limitation-physical (F=2.67, p=.01), role limitation-emotional (F=2.47, p=.02). and general health (F=3.88, p=.00) in health status showed significant differences between the two groups. Conclusion: The study findings revealed Tai Chi exercise as a useful nursing intervention for elderly that enhances flexibility and balance, decreases fall related perception and also increases the health status. Further research is warranted to compare the potential effects of Tai Chi exercise and its health benefits from other types of exercise or martial arts.
