  • Goldingham's measurement of the velocity of sound undertaken in the early nineteenth century was the first large-scale measuring enterprise which considered various meteorological factors such as temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, the direction of the wind, etc. Goldingham's successful performance of measuring the velocity of sound by employing the sounds of cannons as sound source in Madras (now Chennai), a colonial region of India, for one and a half years was supported by material, institutional and social resources. As the official astronomer at the Madras Observatory, he was benefitted by the undemanding employment of accurate measuring instruments under the support of the Madras Army enabled him to gain reliable data and his reputation as professional experimentalist facilitated the acknowledgment of their trustworthiness.

  • In this study the CGS as an injection method by low slump mortar was performed the pilot test to confirm the applicability of this method and the effectiveness of settlement restraint. From the results, there has been concluded the construction control standard such as an institutional diameter, space, depth, injection materials, Infection pressure etc. Also, there has been estimated the ground improvement effectiveness which has resulted from the field investigation and consolidation test etc. From the results, in the adjacent ground the CGS, generally, has been confirmed to in-crease ground strength to improve the consolidation characteristic obtained from the field investigation and consolidation test. Especially, the CGS which performed the larger stiffness to the ground has been concluded that the settlement restraint to the ground complicates the ground effect which Increases the bearing capacity and stress assignment. So, the CGS can be considered as an effective method to increase the bearing capacity as well as the settlement restraint of soft ground.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the attitudes and the perceptions toward a single life and life satisfaction among male and female singles. In this study, a total of 160 singles aged 30 to 39 were interviewed using a questionnaire on socio-economic status, the attitudes and perceptions toward a single life, and life satisfaction. The data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages and chi-square. The major findings of this study are as follows; 1) the socio-economic status of singles are higher than that of the married ones, showing a high level of income, education, and jobs. The 54.4% of the respondents showed that they remained as singles, because they have not met desirable partners yet, and the 20.9% answer that the main reasons for being a single are working and studying. The attitudes and the perceptions toward a single life were measured in six areas; freedom, self-achievement, self-development, institutional pressure. anxiety of support systems, and sex discrimination toward singles. The freedom of a single life was shown to have significant relationships with education and income. The self-achievement, self-development, and the level of anxiety about support systems were shown to be related to the sex of singles, indicating that single women got more benefits than single men. Single men experienced more institutional pressures such as marriage pressures and filial piety than single women. There was no difference in the level of acceptance to live as a single in terms of sex. Finally, life satisfaction with a single life turned to have significant relationships with sex, age, education, and income.

  • Background: Hypertension is a major cause of cardiovascular disease and associated mortality, and postmenopausal women are at a high risk of hypertension. We aim to investigate the hypotensive effect and safety of acupuncture, focusing on postmenopausal women with prehypertension and stage 1 hypertension. In addition, we aim to investigate whether the effect of acupuncture treatment differed, depending on Sasang Constitution and cold-heat pattern. Methods: This study is designed as an intervention cohort study. Two hundred postmenopausal women aged <65 years with prehypertension or stage 1 hypertension living in Daejeon city in Korea will be recruited, and randomly assigned to either an acupuncture or no-treatment control group. The intervention will consist of four sessions; one session will include acupuncture performed 10 times for 4 weeks. There will be a 20-week observation period after each session, and the total study duration will be 96 weeks. Acupuncture will be applied at the bilateral Fengchi (GB20), Quchi (LI11), Zusanli (ST36), and Sameumgyo (SP6) acupoints. The effect of acupuncture will be evaluated by comparing the change in systolic and diastolic blood pressure between the acupuncture and control groups every 4 weeks until the end of the study. Discussion: To evaluate the success of blood pressure management, long-term observation is required, but no long-term studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of acupuncture on blood pressure in postmenopausal women. To our knowledge, this study will be the first long-term study to investigate this issue for more than 6-8 weeks.

  • Driven by the development of information technologies, information system (IS) use has been common even in military organizations. In particular, field artillery is currently using the Battalion Tactical Commanding System-A1 (BTCS-A1) to improve fire support. The use of BTCS-A1 makes fire-commanding processes simple and autonomous, which leads to shorten time to support fire. Although BTCS-A1 has been considered as a helpful system, there still exists some dispute regarding its effectiveness and impact on task performance. By conceptualizing BTCS-A1 use as appropriation, this study investigates how BTCS-A1 appropriation promotes task performance. We also hypothesize that IS quality, organizational pressure (institutional pressure and supervisor influence), and team climate (team learning climate and team empowerment climate) increase the appropriation. Survey results show that organizational pressure and team climate promote BTCS-A1 appropriation, which improves users' task performance. However, effect of IS quality is not significant. Theoretical and practical implications are presented.

  • Previous studies stated that low carbon innovation performance could be influenced by government regulations and the green market, which is the new trend of consumer consumption in the present time, mainly focusing on external factors. Before study augured that low carbon innovation performance could be driven by internal and external factors of cooperation such as institutional pressure, stakeholder pressure, and innovation resources. However, the study of green transformational leadership and organizational environmental culture on low carbon innovation performance is rare, especially in Chinese manufacturing, as well as the effect of influencing factors of TPB model: environmental attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavior capability on low carbon innovation performance. Previous studies mostly used the TPB model for predicting individual behavior. This study established a theoretical model combining the TPB model with green transformational leadership and organizational environmental culture of Chinese automobile manufacturing on low carbon innovation performance. This study consists of two sections of research methodology: section 1 related to questionnaire design and data collection. We established a questionnaire and distributed it online, targeting responses from the managerial level working in Chinese automobile manufacturing. Eventually, 155 valid questionnaires were used for analysis. Section 2 involved data analysis using statistical software. Reliability and data validity was examined by reliability analysis and factor analysis. Correlations and convergent validity analyses were applied, and structural equation modeling was conducted to test the proposed hypotheses. The findings indicated that green transformational leadership, organizational environmental culture, and essential factors of TPB model; environmental attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavior capability positively affect low carbon innovation performance. In addition, the indirect effect of green transformational leadership was tested and found that organizational environmental culture and TPB factors mediated the relationship between transformational leadership and low carbon innovation performance.
