The purpose of this research is to investigate the metadata elements of institutional repository using DSpace and to provide the directions and strategies for constructing metadata. To the end, discussed in details are (1) understanding the background of development, features, elements of metadata, (2) figuring out the common metadata elements and the differentiated metadata elements for the institutional repository, (3) examining the search methods, search elements, and display elements of the insitutional repository, and (4) based on theses, suggested are directions and strategies for metadata of institutional repository using DSpace. The research methods were used such as literature review, the analysis of 4 domestic institutional repository.

This study is carried out as a precedent work for the implementation of an Open Access Initiative(OAI) compatible with Korean libraries. Institutional Repository is a new concept for collecting, managing, disseminating, and preserving scholarly works created in digital form by faculty and researchers in individual organizations according to open access paradigm. This study briefly outlines the need for Institutional Repository, their role, constitutional elements, benefits and drawbacks. This is followed by recent case studies of SHEPRA, Dspace, eDoc Server and dCollection. The conceptual model of Institutional Repository was suggested and the key considerations to be taken into account for the successful implementation of Institutional Repository at the beginning stage were proposed from a stakeholder's perspective.

Institutional Repository offers integrated capture, management. preservation and access intellectual asset of individual institution and is also considered as a strategy to disseminate and exchange intellectual output as part of global 'Knowledge Bank'. A case of Institutional Repository, 'dCollection,' was introduced in Korea Education & Research Information Service(KERIS) as an institutional repository solution. This paper drew related issues in order to apply institutional repository to domestic universities. The results will bring a paradigm shift in scholarly communications, as a guideline of institutional repositories in the university libraries.

Institutional repository has been regarded as core facilities of research libraries to realize open access by collecting, preserving, distributing of intellectual asset what institution has created. In our country, many universities and research institutions are trying to introduce institutional repository system. But almost universities not only take the negative attitude to manage properly, but also never give basic training to staff members who take over institutional repository job. This study brightens up the current status of Korean training system and compares the British and Japanese cases what shows diverse advanced managing cases. Furthermore, by putting together demands of hands-on workers, suggest direction of future institutional repository staff training system. First, institutional repository staff training system has to suggest strategies to induce strong support from institution. Second, it has to give not only courses about content collecting and registering, but also practical training. Finally, the program for enhancing system management technology has to be provided, and the place where technical staffs can share their system information mutually has to be provided.

This study analyzes the effect of A university's institutional repository(A-IR) which performs as a gateway of university research. This research presents A-IR's operational policy and usage analyses which consist of visits, pageviews, demographics and behaviors of visitors, frequency of visits and traffic sources. On the basis of this analyses, this research found the correlations between usage of IR and citations of research papers.

With the understandings on users' needs and behaviors of university institutional repositories, the purpose of this study is to investigate the user behaviors and to provide some suggestions to improve the university institutional repository. To achieve the purpose of this study, a questionnaires survey was conducted with users in three university institutional repositories including KOSAS, S-Space and DSpace@INHA. Based on the results of the survey analyses, possible improvement areas and suggestions were made such as users' recognition, access point, searching environment, and utilization of university institutional repository.

This study investigated and analyzed operating policies and status of the best practices repository in the world to propose the successful strategies of management and establishment of repository. The best practices were selected from the top 10 of the Ranking Web of World Repositories by CSIC and Registry of Open Access Repositories by JISC. These repositories fell into two rough classes, disciplinary and institutional repositories. Policies on operation and support, collection, management, distribution and information services, long-term preservation, technology and copyright were analyzed. Characteristic of disciplinary and institutional repository policies were also identified.

This study proposes additional service pages for users, researchers, institutions to activate academic institutional repository which captures, disseminates, and manages various academic resources, i.e. theses, dissertations, journal articles, research reports, and so on. The research methods include literature study, case study, and site analysis on the current homepages of Ewha Womans University faculties & institutions. As a result, components and functions of additional service pages such as researchers' pages are suggested. Additional service pages will be made it possible for researchers to submit their products willingly and for academic institutional repositories to activate their services and improve content recruitment in the end.

This study extracted quality control factors for invigorating Institutional Repository operations, and re-extracted key quality control factors with significant influence among them. Furthermore, this study developed an operating model reflecting an improvement scheme of these key quality control factors, and estimated how much effective the operating model was to the user. As a result of inspecting satisfaction for IR operating model and the general system, it has been found that librarians' satisfaction for them is higher than that of the general user. Korea's universities prefer a proxy submission mode by librarians to a self-archiving submission mode by writers. Therefore, based on the operation model developed by this study, it is suggested that Institutional Repository operation can be actively invigorated with librarians of these universities as central players.

In this study, the use statistics by type of data in the A university of a Institutional Repository(IR) with exponential growth in usage and the trend of changes in the access path for users to access A-IR were analyzed. In particular, it was verified that securing various exposure paths contributed to the spread of A-IR by focusing on the change in the approach path, and also confirmed that the method of communication between the ages, such as SNS, is used as the approach path of A-IR. Through this process, the company was planning to suggest the direction of operation, including diversification of exposure paths that activate the institutional repository.
