  • Background: Physical activity (PA) is critical for maintaining the health and well-being of older people in community and also institutional settings. The purpose of this study was to examine the current status of PA and related individual and organizational factors among older nursing home residents with and without dementia. Methods: This is a secondary data analysis study of a nationwide survey of 92 long-term care facilities in Korea, and the study sample includes older residents with dementia (n= 753) and without dementia (n= 480). The level of PA was measured by PA time and whether or not residents had an outdoor activity over the past 3 days. Multi-variate, multi-level analyses were conducted. Results: More than half of the sample in both groups had no or less than 1 hour of PA. About one out of four older people in our sample had no outdoor activity over the past 3 days regardless of whether or not they had dementia. Among the people without dementia, several individual-level factors were associated with PA, including dependency for activities of daily living, social activity participation, and caregivers' belief in the functional improvement of residents. Unlike the non-dementia group, individual- and organizationallevel factors including staffing level and having the relevant equipment for PA were associated with PA among those with dementia. Conclusion: Study findings provide evidence on the lack of PA among older nursing home residents, and the importance of institutional capacity with regard to human resources and physical equipment for promoting PA among people with dementia, in particular. Policies and supports are needed to promote the implementation of healthy aging programs including PA for older nursing home residents. Such programs should be person-centered with consideration to the physical and cognitive status of individual residents.

  • The "About Us" page on the website of a corporation provides information regarding the organization's vision, philosophy, and values. We examine the association between institutional information provided on corporate websites (i.e., the "About Us" section) with present and future financial performance. Utilizing a text mining technique, we analyze the institutional information of S&P500 firms in the year 2016. We conduct a factor analysis including words that are intentionally repeated in the introductory text of corporate websites. The results of the analysis reveal that keywords from this institutional information can be grouped into six factors. We then carry out an ordinary least squares regression analysis to determine the associations between these six factors and present financial performance. The results show that keywords in Factor 2 (those related to Purchasing experience) are positively associated with ROE, a variable representing present financial performance, while keywords in Factor 1 (those related to Note to customers) show a negative relationship with ROE. On the other hand, keywords in Factor 1 have a positive relationship with Tobin's Q, a variable representing future financial performance. These results indicate that there is some relationship between the words used in the institutional information in this section of corporate websites and firms' financial performance. Hence, the institutional information on a website may be a useful indicator of current firm performance and future firm value.

Methods: This study was a descriptive research study in which 229 RNs working in 2 tertiary medical institutions in Seoul and 4 secondary medical institutions in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi were surveyed. Results: It was found that nurses' knowledge about pain intervention, their working division and their knowledge about the use of analgesics had different effects on their pharmacologic interventions. These 3 variables explained 14.5% of the variance regarding pharmacologic interventions. On the other hand, nurses' knowledge about pain interventions and nursing organization were variables affecting non-pharmacologic interventions by the nurses. These two variables explained 22.1% of the variance regarding non-pharmacologic interventions by the nurses. Conclusion: The findings indicate that nursing organization, one of hospital institutional factors, had significant effects on non-pharmacologic interventions. Therefore, to increase effective pain management by nurses, an organizational system should be established such as placement of nurse practitioners, improvement of nurses' autonomy in pain management, and development and distribution of standardized guidelines.
