Developmental characteristics of Zophobas atratus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) larvae in different instars

  • The giant mealworm beetle, Zophobas atratus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), is reared for commercial purposes as a live feed for animals. In 2011, it was officially introduced in Korea, and since then it has been considered commercially important. This beetle is a good animal feed resource because of its high protein content with balanced nutrients. However, its life stage characteristics have not been clearly described, especially of the larval stage that can be used as commercial products. To this end, in our study, we determined the number of Z. atratus larval instars, and described their characteristics at each stage, providing basic information about this beetle. Z. atratus larvae required eight to nine d of incubation period before hatching. The first instar period comprised three to four d. There were relatively large variations in each instar period, except for the first instar. Before the adults emerged, most of the individuals passed through15 to 18 instars. The highest pupation rate, 25.71%, was observed in both 16th and 17th instars. Body length gradually increased with each successive instar and it reached its maximum at the 18th instar. The color of larvae was white at the first instar, and gradually turned brown after the second instar.

  • Silkworm fed on mulgerry leaves with 1000 times diluted Insegar(main component : Fenoxycarb, ethyl-2-(4-phenoxyphenoxy)ethylcarbmate) and its effects was investigated on increase of the 5th larval silkgland weight and silk quality. The oral application of fenoxycarb showed increase of the silkgland weight. The whole period of the silkgland weight falls on the 2nd instar treatment by 13%, the 3rd day of the 4th instar by 111%(3100 mg) and the whole period of the 5th instar treatment rather decreased it by 66%(497 mg), as compared to 1470mg of the control. Female and male both increased 15%(1779mg) and 12%(1554mg) of the silkgland weight with the 2nd instar treatment, as compared to 1548mg and 1391mg in control, respectively. 118%(3368mg) and 104%(2832mg) of increase in the silkgland weight were also showed with the 3rd day of the 4th instar treatment but 70%(463mg) and 61%(539mg) of decrease were shown with the 5th instar treatment. The maximum weight of the middle silkgland weight increased by 6%(1248mg) and 127%(2673mg) with the 2nd instar and with the 3rd day of the 4th instar, respectively but 67%(393mg) of decrease took place, as compared to 1175mg of the control. The maximum increase of the posterior silkgland weight with whole peried of the 2nd instar treatment increased 12%(419mg) and 75%(656mg) and 64%(135mg) of decrease was shown, as compared to 374mg of the control. The oral application of Insegar at the 2nd instar increased 26 m of cocoon length, 4.0 cg of the cocoon filament weight and 0.21d of the silk denier, as compared to 1147 m of the cocoon length, 38 cg of the cocoon filament, 2.99d of the silk denier, weight of cocoon filament and silk denier, respectively but denier variance narrowed to 0.33d, as compared to that of the control.

  • Tenebrio molitor is a major pest of stored grain, although its larvae have potential for use as food. However, little is known about the characteristics of individual larval instars of this species, and the number of instars remains disputed. Therefore, we assessed T. molitor for the average number of instars and its characteristics at different larval stages. The focus of this study was to establish a foundation for further studies on the characteristics of each larval instar. All of the T. molitor larvae showed incubation periods of 7 to 8 d and a period of 3 to 4 d for the $1^{st}$ instar. Beyond the $1^{st}$ instar, there were relatively large variations in the number of days in each instar period. Before emergence, most of the larvae had typically gone through 15 to 17 instars. The highest rate of pupae formation, 28.32%, was observed in the $17^{th}$ instars. The body length gradually increased with each successive instar, reaching its maximum at the 17th instar. Beyond the $17^{th}$ instar, however, the body length decreased. The larvae were white in the first instar, and gradually turned brown after the $2^{nd}$ instar.

Study on the Bionomics of Overwintering Green Leaf-hopper, Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler, in Milyang (밀양에서 월동하는 끝동매미충(Nephotettix cincticeps)의 개체군 생태에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the winter ecology of the green leafhopper(GLH), Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler, in Milyang, south-eastern part of Korea from early December to early April during 1990 to 1992. The instar distribution in the overwinteing GLH population collected in December 5th was most of 4th instar 77% to 79% followed by 3rd instar 15% to 17% and 5th instar 3%. These instar distribution rate in the overwintering GLH was changed with collecting dates during overwintering periods of the GLH. Among the GLH population collected, as a result, the distribution rate of the 5th instar was significantly increased in February 20th and was most of 5th instar 70% to 71% in March 19th and was adult 47% to 50% in April 8th. During two overwintering periods of the GLH, the averaged instars converted the instar distribution of the overwintering GLH into the numerical values were 3.91 and 3.86 instar in December 5th, 4.11 and 4.07 instar in February 20th, 4.75 and 4.79 instar in March 19th and 5.42 and 5.45 instar in April 8th respectively. In addition to, the developmental index between pre-collected date and post-collected date of the overwintering GLH was roughly more than 1.0 value. It means that the overwintering GLH was developed without cease though the development was very slow and deponded upon air temperature. The overwintering GLH population were significantly more collected at the levee than at the barley field.

Activities of esterase and acetylcholinesterase on the diamond backmoth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera : Yponomeutidae) and beet armywarm, Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera : Noctuidae) and inhibitions of acetylcholinesterase with flupyrazofos (배추좀나방과 파밤나방의 효소활성 및 flupyrazofos 에 의한 AChE 활성 저해)

  • The activities of esterase and acetylcholinesterase(AChE) on the Diamond backmoth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Yponomeutidae) and Beet armywarm (BAW), Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and inhibitions of AChE with flupyrazofos were clarified from the results of a series of experiments. These findings are described in brief as follows. The AChE activities of DBM and BAW in heads were $1.5{\sim}11.1{\mu}$mol/g/min in $1st{\sim}4th$ instar larvae of DBM and $1.7{\sim}45.2{\mu}$mol/g/min in $1st{\sim}6th$ instar larvae of BAW, respectively. Those were $25{\sim}30$ times higher in above 4th instar larvae of BAW than that of the 1st instar larvae of DBM. The activities of aliesterase in heads were $1.7{\sim}4.7$ times higher in $2nd{\sim}4th$ instar larvae of DBM and $8{\sim}55$ times higher in $3rd{\sim}6th$ instar larvae of BAW than 1st instar larvae of DBM. In abdomens, those were $3{\sim}17$ times higher in $2nd{\sim}4th$ instar larvae of DBM and $12{\sim}30$ times higher in $3rd{\sim}6th$ instar larvae of BAW than 1st instar larvae of DBM. Median AChE inhibition concentration $(I_{50})$ of flupyrazofos to the 2nd instar larvae of DBM and BAW were 92 nM and $15{\mu}M$, respectively, and those to the 4th instar larvae of DBM and BAW were $1.8{\mu}M$ and 3.1 mM, respectively. Insensitivity ratio of flupyrazofos in the 2nd instar BAW larvae showed ca. 162 times higher than that in the 2nd instar larvae of DBM, and that of the 4th instar BAW larvae showed ca. 1,720 times higher insensitivity to flupyrazofos than that of the 4th instar DBM larvae. AChE activities in the 2nd instar larvae of DBM and BAW at 32 h after applicaton of flupyrazofos decreased from 67.6% to 32.4% of the activity of the untreated control. That of the 4th instar larvae of DBM increased for 0.5 h after application flupyrazofos up to 75% of the untreated control, and after that it decreased to 34.5% of the untreated control at 32 h. In contrast, in the 4th instar larvae of BAW AChE activities increased for 8 h gradually up to 102 % of the activity of the untreated control, and then the activity decreased to 97% of the untreated control at 16 h after treatment.

Impact of Nosema sp. Infection on Nutritional Physiology and Growth of the Tasar Silkworm Antheraea mylitta

  • Nosema sp. infection in the Indian tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta exerts a complex of influences on its host. The instar duration was extended significantly (P<0.001) except in $1^{st}$ instar. The infected larvae took about 48 days to reach the spinning stage against 40 days in the uninfected ones. The final weight attained by the larva at the end of each instar of development declined significantly following infection, as did weight gain and relative growth rate (RGR). The growth recorded/ day declined in infected larvae compared to uninfected ones from 8.2% during $1^{st}$ instar to 43.3% during $5^{th}$ instar. Food ingestion and digestion increased with advancement of the instar significantly irrespective of the status of the larvae but the relative consumption rate (RCR) declined. These parameters significantly declined in infected larvae (except food digested during $2^{nd}$ instar). The decline was more during $3^{rd}$ instar. In contrast, the approximate digestibility (AD %) was significantly higher in infected larvae than uninfected ones leaving the $1^{st}$ instar larvae unaffected. The efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI) and efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD) did not change in a patterned way following the microsporidia (Nosema sp.) infection. The values of ECI significantly changed during $2^{nd}$, $3^{rd}$ and $5^{th}$ instars; while the change in ECD during $2^{nd}$, $4^{th}$ and $5^{th}$ were significant. During the entire larval life all the parameters tends to decline significantly following microsporidia infection but AD registered a significant increase. Nosema sp. spore concentration has increased 270.7 times during larval development in the course of experimentation.

Studies of the Life Cycle and Rearing Methods of Whitebacked Planthopper (Sogatella furcifera Horváth) (흰등멸구의 생활환 및 사육방법 연구)

  • This study developed a method to minimize rice damages and enhance timely control by accurately classifying Whitebacked Planthopper (WBPH). The body size of the 1st-3rd instar was 1.5-2 mm, and the body size of the 4-5 instar was 2.5-3.5 mm. In the third instar, the ratio of the front wing bud and the back wing-bud was 1:1. The fourth instar occupied 3/4 of the front wing-bud, and the 5th instar showed that the front wing-bud covers the back wing-bud. It was confirmed that the 1st instar does not have a sensory plate, the 2nd instar has 2-3, the 3rd instar has 4-5, the 4th instar has 6-9, the 5th instar has 10-15, and the adult instar has 15-20 sensory plates. The female spawning organs were reddish when the spawning horn was inserted. WBPH showed that the larvae of 2-3 larvae most actively feed on rice, and the damaged area was the stem of rice near the ground. In addition, a partial black wound was observed after the feeding. WBPH-susceptible 'Chucheong' was yellowish, and early growth was slower than that of 'Cheongcheong', which was resistant; moreover, a difference between susceptibility and resistance was observed. The identification of the number of such wounds in the bioassay will be a better basis for understanding the difference in susceptibility between WBPH strains and cultivars. These results will be used as basic data for cultivating the WBPH-resistant varieties of rice.

  • The larval instar of Scintillatrix djingischani OBENBERGER WES determined by measuring the head width of the larvae, some of which were bred in the room and the other collected in orchards during four years(1963-1966). Their growth ratio and variation were also studied. 1) The variation curve of the head width of the Iarvae distinctly appeared to be seven (7) curves, which seemed to have lived to be over seven(7) instars after six(6) times of molting. 2) In general, tile larvae live out to be 6-7 instar. Those pupated at 6th instar seem to over winter in tissue from November as matured. And those pupated in late Spring or early Summer after over wintering in canbium seem to be at 7th instar. 3) The standard deviation of the head width tends to grow larger except at 1st and 7th instar, while the coefficient of variation tends to decrease according as the number of instar increases. The growth ratio was found to decrease according as the number of instar increase except at 1 at and 2 nd instar. 4) To the growth of tee larval head width of this insect, Games and Campbell's formula was more applicable than Dyar's. 5) From the activties of larvae it is presumed that those bred in the year over winter in phelloderm or canbium at the 2 nd-3 rd instar, and the matured (2 year old) emerge the next year after over wintering in cambium or tissue at the 5th or 6th instar.

Study on the Bonomics of Overwintering Small Brown Planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus Falen, in Milyang (밀양에서 월동 애멸구 (Laodelphax striatellus)의 개체군 생태에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to determine the winter ecology of the small brown planthopper (SBPH), laodelphax striatellus Fallen, in Milyang, east Kyungsangnamdo province. The age distribution in the overwintering SBPH population varied according to collection dates. In early December, the population distribution was 60% 4th instar, 30% 3rd instar, 6% 5th instar, 3.4% 2nd instar with very few adults and 1st instar. In early March 5th instars had the highest propotion (47-50%) with 4th instar 44-46%. In early April the adult population was 75-81% of the population. The averaged nymphal instar converted the age distribution of he overwintering SBPH in to the into the numerical values tended to increase continuously. However, there were some differences in the averaged nymphal instar of overwintering SBPH annually and these differences resulted from different age distribution of the overwintering SBPH due to different annual temperature fluctuations during overwitering periods. The weight of the overwintering SBPH increased continuously during overwintering periods. The collection density of the overwintering SBPH population was significantly higher on the levee than in the barley field. Percent nymphal parasitism by haplogonatopus atratus in the overwintering SBPH population averaged about 21% regardless of overwintering years.

Relation among Food Consumption, Conversion and Cocoon Production in Silkworm, Bombyx Mori L. Reared at Different Temperatures

  • Rearing temperature influences food consumption, conversion and cocoon production in silkworm Bombyx mori L. Young age $({1^st}to{3^rd} instar)$ worms of Pure Mysore, a multivoltine were reared at 26, 28, 30 and $32^{\circ}C$ followed by combinations of these temperature levels during late age $({4^th} and {5^th} instar)$. Food consumption, conversion, larval duration and growth for each instar were recorded. The influence of combinations of these temperature levels during rearing on survival and cocoon production was assessed. Food consumption increased with the temperature up to $4^th$ instar and decreased during $5^th$ instar. Temperature beyond $28^{\circ}C$ during young age followed by higher temperature ($30^{\circ}C$ and above) has shown deleterious effect on cocoon production. The paper discusses the rearing performance in relation to food intake and conversion under the tested temperature levels.
