  • This paper tried to verify whether the fixed fire fighting system (FFFS) that is installed in road tunnel improves evacuation performance or not. Verification was performed according to the Disaster Prevention Facilities Installation and Management Guide at Road Tunnel. Twenty seven different fire scenarios were set up for the verification and the cases that FFFS was installed were compared with the cases that FFFS was not installed. The result of the comparison showed that the average equivalent death was reduced in 26 cases out of 27 cases when water spray extinguishing system was installed. It was confirmed that the risk when was not installed was unacceptable in Hong Kong and the Netherlands. On the other hand, it was confirmed that the risk was reduced to as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) when was installed. The cumulative frequency of average death in case with FFFS was compared against the frequency of death without FFFS: death of one or more is about 50 times less; 10 or more is about 100 times less; and the death of more than 100 is four times less. It was verified that FFFS makes improved conditions to escape from the fires in road tunnel.

  • For vibration control of stay cables in cable-stayed bridges, viscous dampers are frequently used, and they are regularly installed between the cable and the bridge deck. In practice, neoprene rubber bushings (or of other types) are also widely installed inside the cable guide pipe, mainly for reducing the bending stresses of the cable near its anchorages. Therefore, it is important to understand the effect of the bushings on the performance of the external damper. Besides, for long cables, external dampers installed at a single position near a cable end can no longer provide enough damping due to the sag effect and the limited installation distance. It is thus of interest to improve cable damping by additionally installing dampers inside the guide pipe. This paper hence studies the combined effects of an external damper and an internal damper (which can also model the bushings) on a stay cable. The internal damper is assumed to be a High Damping Rubber (HDR) damper, and the external damper is considered to be a viscous damper with intrinsic stiffness, and the cable sag is also considered. Both the cases when the two dampers are installed close to one cable end and respectively close to the two cable ends are studied. Asymptotic design formulas are derived for both cases considering that the dampers are close to the cable ends. It is shown that when the two dampers are placed close to different cable ends, their combined damping effects are approximately the sum of their separate contributions, regardless of small cable sag and damper intrinsic stiffness. When the two dampers are installed close to the same end, maximum damping that can be achieved by the external damper is generally degraded, regardless of properties of the HDR damper. Field tests on an existing cable-stayed bridge have further validated the influence of the internal damper on the performance of the external damper. The results suggest that the HDR is optimally placed in the guide pipe of the cable-pylon anchorage when installing viscous dampers at one position is insufficient. When an HDR damper or the bushing has to be installed near the external damper, their combined damping effects need to be evaluated using the presented methods.

  • The design and performance verification of collocated capacitance sensor system for magnetic bearing is presented. Noncollocation between actuators and sensors may cause unstable rotor behavior. The capacitance sensor is not affected by magnetic field. PCB type capacitance sensor is installed between magnetic bearing polse. so, collocation of sensors and actuators can be achieved. Experiment of sensor's static and dynamic charactistics is conducted. Modeling of the rotor system supported by magnetic bearing is made. And performance comparison between simulation and experiment is showed.

  • To know about the performance of KREONET, we installed an active network performance measurement tool, PingER. For customization, we modified its architecture and some codes. Although this customization is a minor change of PingER, it gives much benefit and convenience for both operators and users. Using PingER, we can measure the effect of the STAR TAP link. The new networking through the link is a little bit slower than the previous networking. But the new link shows far fewer packet losses and provides more reliable networking.

  • Cyclic heating performance of 3 ton air-to-air unitary heat pump installed in a residence in the Washington, D.C. area was determined by applying the bin method to field test result. Cyclic degradation coefficient Cn of heat pump may be expressed in terms of heating load factor HLF as the following : $$C_D=\frac{1-HLF^m}{1-HLF}$$ where $$C_D{\ge}m$$ The less is the value of exponent m, the better is, the performance of a heat pump, depending upon the heat pump design.

  • In this study, reliability tests of torsion control expansion anchors according to drill bit diameters were performed. The standard deviation and coefficient of variation of the anchor were reviewed through the tests for each variable, and the results were compared and evaluated with the standard test results. As a result of the reliability test of the M12 and M16 anchors with 1.04 times the drill bit diameter, they were within 20% of the ultimate tensile load permissible standard coefficient of variation. It was found that the pulling-out performance of the anchor installed in the large hole was sufficiently secured. However, it was found to be about 253% and 210% of the design strength, indicating that the pulling performance of the anchor installed in 1.04 times the drill bit diameter was sufficiently secured. As a result of the reliability test of the M12 and M16 anchors with 1.02 times the drill bit diameter, the value of the coefficient of variation of the ultimate tensile load limit was within 20%, which satisfies the test standard. It was shown to be about 136% and 168% of the design strength, indicating that the pulling-out performance of the anchor installed in 1.02 times the drill bit diameter is sufficiently secured.

  • As a power transmission line supplying power to a densely populated city, the high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable is expected to one of the most effective cables with a compact size because of its high current density. The verification of HTS power cable system have been progressed by KEPRI. A cooling system for a 3-phase 100m HTS power cable with 22.9kV/1.25kA was installed and tested at KEPCO's Gochang power testing center in Korea. The system consists of a liquid nitrogen decompression cooling system with a cooling capacity of 3kW and a closed circulation system of subcooled liquid nitrogen. Several performance tests of the cable system with respect to the cooling such as cooling capacity, heat load and temperature stability, were performed at several temperatures. Thermal cycle test, cool-down to liquid nitrogen temperature and warm-up to room temperature, was also performed to investigate thermal cycle influences. The outline of the installed cooling system and performance test results are presented in this paper.

  • Performance of water-to-air heat pump using raw water has been analyzed under part load heating operation in March, 2010. The water source heat pump of 30 RT was installed for 24 hours cooling and heating ventilation, and the gravity inflow water from Daechung dam is used as the heat source. The daily averaged water and air temperatures are $5.7^{\circ}C$ and $9.9^{\circ}C$ respectively, and the heat pump is operated under part load condition for 7.5 hours in 24 hours. The daily averaged heat pump COP calculated with heat transferred from the brine water is 2.49 and the monthly averaged COP is 2.25 in March. Based on the database of the California Energy Commission, the monthly averaged COPs of air source heat pumps installed in U.S.A. are 1.97 in March and 2.03 in April. Therefore it is confirmed again that the performance of the heat pump using raw water is better than that of air source heat pumps.

  • In order to improve the acoustic performance of a noise barrier without increasing its height, various type of acoustic devices are suggested but, there is no proper method to estimate the performance in Korea. For this, an outdoor test facility was established in Expressway and Transportation Technology Institute(ETTI) of Korea Expressway Corporation for testing the acoustical performance of noise reducing devices installed on the top of a noise barrier. Noise measurements before and after installation of the noise reducing devices were carried out by using sound pressure level for long distance range from the barrier, from 10m to 40m. For considering the directivity effects of noise reducing devices, multivariate regression analysis was attempted.

  • It has been widely accepted that the pressure management of water distribution systems using pressure reducing valves(PRVs) would be an effective method for controlling leakages. A pressure reducing valve (PRV) regulates outlet pressure regardless of fluctuating flow and varying inlet pressure, thereby reducing leakage and mitigating the stress on the water distribution system. However, the operation of a PRV is vulnerable to its mechanical condition and hydraulic operability. In this research, the effect of PRVs installed in water distribution system are evaluated in terms of hydraulic pressure reduction and mechanical performance by analyzing measured pressure data with statistical approach. A statistical approach using the moving average filter and frequency analysis based on fourier transform is presented to detect abnormally operated PRVs that have been densely installed in water distribution system. The result shows that the proposed approach can be a good performance evaluation method by simply measuring pressures for the PRVs.
