Experimental Analysis on the Anodic Bonding with Evaporated Glass Layer

  • We have performed silicon-to-silicon anodic bonding using glass layer deposited by electron beam evaporation. Wafers can be bonded at $135^{\circ}C$ with an applied voltage of $35V_{DC}$, which enables application of this technique to the vacuum packaging of microelectronic devices, because its bonding temperature and voltage are low. From the experimental results, we have found that the evaporated glass layer more than $1\;{\mu}$ m thick was suitable for anodic bonding. The role of sodium ions for anodic bonding was also investigated by theoretical bonding mechanism and experimental inspection.

The Precursors and Flavor Constituents of the Cooked Oyster Flavor (굴 자숙향의 발현성분)

  • In order to elucidate a mechanism responsible for the development of the odor characteristics of cooked, desirable-flavored shellfish, oysters were extracted using various solvents and the resulting extracts were evaluated organoleptically after cooking. The 80% aqueous methanol extract was found to produce a desirable cooked flavor. This oyster extract was fractionated using ion-exchange column chromatography and dialysis, and each of the fractions was subjected to cooking, followed by organoleptic evaluation. The outer dialysate fraction such as acidic and amphoteric water-soluble fractions produced a cooked oyster flavor. The volatile flavor compounds identified from cooked oyster included 29 hydrocarbons, 20 alcohols, 16 acids, 12 aldehydes, nine nitrogen-containing aromatic compounds, eight ketones, five furans, three esters, three phenols, and one benzene.

  • A mobile robot, named KAEROT, has been developed for inspection and maintenance operations in nuclear facilities. The main feature of locomotion system is the planetary wheel assembly with small wheels. This mechanism has been designed to be able to go over the stairs and obstacles with stability. This paper presents the inverse kinematic solution that is to be operated by remote control. The automatic stair climbing algorithm is also proposed. The. proposed algorithms generates the moving pathes of small wheels and calculates the angular velocity of 3 actuation wheels. The results of simulations and experiments are given for KAEROT peformed on the irregular stairs in laboratory. It is shown that the proposed algorithm provides the lower inclination angle of the robot body and increases its stability during navigation.

Simulation Based Investigation of Focusing Phased Array Ultrasound in Dissimilar Metal Welds

  • Flaws at dissimilar metal welds (DMWs), such as reactor coolant systems components, Control Rod Drive Mechanism (CRDM), Bottom Mounted Instrumentation (BMI) etc., in nuclear power plants have been found. Notably, primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) in the DMWs could cause significant reliability problems at nuclear power plants. Therefore, phased array ultrasound is widely used for inspecting surface break cracks and stress corrosion cracks in DMWs. However, inspection of DMWs using phased array ultrasound has a relatively low probability of detection of cracks, because the crystalline structure of welds causes distortion and splitting of the ultrasonic beams which propagates anisotropic medium. Therefore, advanced evaluation techniques of phased array ultrasound are needed for improvement in the probability of detection of flaws in DMWs. Thus, in this study, an investigation of focusing and steering phased array ultrasound in DMWs was carried out using a time reversal technique, and an adaptive focusing technique based on finite element method (FEM) simulation. Also, evaluation of focusing performance of three different focusing techniques was performed by comparing amplitude of phased array ultrasonic signals scattered from the targeted flaw with three different time delays.

Automatic Searching Algorithm for Galactic HI at Forbidden Velocities in the Inner-Galaxy ALFA Low-Latitude HI (I-GALFA) Survey

  • The faint wing-like features at velocities beyond the velocity boundaries of the Galactic rotation (Forbidden-Velocity Wings, FVWs) in the large-scale position-velocity diagrams of the HI surveys are thought to be associated with dynamical Galactic events. The primary candidates of these FVWs are rapidly expanding HI shells of the old Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs), which are too faint to be visible in other frequencies. The unprecedented sensitivity and resolution of the I-GALFA survey enable detection of "all" HI shells of Galactic SNRs at forbidden velocities predicted by Koo and Kang (2004). Therefore, comparing the distribution of the FVWs visible in the I-GALFA survey and that of the model will improve our understanding on the interstellar medium and the evolution of SNRs. We have been developing an automatic searching algorithm for FVWs in the I-GALFA survey to minimize the selection effects of visual inspection used in the previous FVW study. We present the searching mechanism for FVWs and the statistical properties of the automatically searched FVWs. Also, we discuss the similarities and the differences between the distribution of the identified FVWs and that of the SNRs predicted by Koo and Kang (2004).

  • Purpose: In this study, the goal is to analyze this case to prevent the same accidents when using one-shot rifle. Methods: Detailed analysis of damaged parts must first be made in order to determine the cause of the abnormal explosion. The cause of abnormal operation can be determined by analyzing the information of damaged components and the firing mechanism of the weapon step by step. Also we can refer to a statement of shooter, witness and accident scene situation. Based on this theory, cause of abnormal firing can be narrow down. Results: Fracture of pin for fixing firing and latch is cause of abnormal operation of firing. Conclusion: It is deemed that periodic inspection and fundamental improvement of the structure are required to prevent the same accident as this.

Development of Self-Driven Pneumatic Robot for Boresonic Examination of Turbine Rotor (터빈로터 중심공 검사용 자기주행 공압형 로봇 개발)

  • This study presents a new principle for driving the robot aimed at reducing the position error for the boresonic examination of turbine rotor. The conventional method of inspection is performed by installing manipulator onto the flange of the turbine rotor and connecting a pipe, which is then being pushed into the bore. The longer the pipe gets, the greater sagging and distortion appear, making it difficult for the ultrasonic sensor to contact with the internal surface of the bore. A pneumatic pressure will ensure the front or rear feet of the robot in close contact with the inner wall to prevent slipping, while the ball screw on the body of the robot will rotate to drive it in the axial direction. The compression force required for tight contact was calculated in the form of a three-point support, and a static structural simulation analysis was performed by designing and modeling the robot mechanism. The driving performance and ultrasonic detection ability have been tested by fabricating the robot, the test piece for ultrasonic calibration and the transparent mock-up for robot demonstration. The tests have confirmed that no slipping occurs at a certain pneumatic pressure or over.

  • This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of rescue apparatus, that can capture crabs using external stimuli such as food and electricity, without relying on divers. In this study, a microcomputer-based controller and an IC-device-based controller were developed, and spot inspection was conducted using 20 modules and 30 sea urchin removal modules. Accordingly, 58, 18, 17, and 74 sea urchins were introduced in the first, second, third and fourth experiments, respectively. The result of evaluating the lure of each removal mechanism, based on the catch per unit effort, with an electrical stimulus was 1.1 (32/10), with a feeding stimulus was 3.4 (100/29), and with electrical and feeding stimuli was 3.5 (35/10).

  • Nickel base Alloy X-750, which is used as fastener parts in light-water reactor (LWR), has experienced many failures by environmentally assisted cracking (EAC). In order to improve the reliability of passive components for nuclear power plants (NPP's), it is necessary to study the failure mechanism and to predict crack growth behavior by developing a probabilistic failure model. In this study, The Bayesian inference was employed to reduce the uncertainties contained in EAC modeling parameters that have been established from experiments with Alloy X-750. Corrosion fatigue crack growth rate model (FCGR) was developed by fitting into Paris' Law of measured data from the several fatigue tests conducted either in constant load or constant ΔK mode. These parameters characterizing the corrosion fatigue crack growth behavior of X-750 were successfully updated to reduce the uncertainty in the model by using the Bayesian inference method. It is demonstrated that probabilistic failure models for passive components can be developed by updating a laboratory model with field-inspection data, when crack growth rates (CGRs) are low and multiple inspections can be made prior to the component failure.

  • The flow accelerated corrosion (FAC) is one of significant aging and degradation mechanism and can affect structural integrity of CANDU feeder pipes. Pipe burst can occur under normal operation pressure (min. 10 MPa) if wall-thinning of the feeder pipe due to FAC is accumulated. Previous studies considered simple shapes of feeder pipe with local wall-thinning in order to conservatively assess structural integrity of wall-thinned feeder pipe. In this paper, a new FE model is developed, having an actual shape of the feeder pipe (double bent) as well as the actual wall-thinning shape and location based on the in-service inspection result. Then, the burst pressure assessment of the wall-thinned feeder pipe is performed using lower bound limit load analysis considering elastic-perfectly plastic material. In addition, an improved formulation to predict the burst pressure of the wall-thinned feeder pipe is presented and the safety margin is compared with an existing assessment method.
