Background: In Korea, little research has focused on the relationship between discrimination in the workplace and sleep health. Thus, this study aims to investigate the association between such discriminatory experiences and insomnia, a common sleep disorder, using Korean employees' data. Methods: This study used data from the 6th Korea Working Conditions Survey. Discrimination experiences due to age, ethnic background, nationality, race, sex, religion, disability, sexual orientation, educational level, hometown, and employment status were investigated. The Minimal Insomnia Symptom Scale estimated insomnia symptoms. The association between discrimination experience and insomnia symptoms were analyzed using survey-weighted logistic regression analysis. Results: Based on experiences of discrimination over the past 12 months, insomnia symptoms were associated with discrimination experience due to religion (odds ratio [OR]: 3.70; 95% confidential interval [CI]: 1.58-8.69), sex (OR: 2.51; 95% CI: 1.87-3.37), age (OR: 2.30; 95% CI: 1.88-2.81), hometown (OR: 2.07; 95% CI: 1.44-2.97), employment status (OR: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.37-2.10), and educational level (OR: 1.67; 95% CI: 1.31-2.14). Furthermore, the prevalence of insomnia symptoms increased with the number of discrimination experiences. Conclusions: In this study, discrimination experiences due to religion, sex, age, hometown, employment status, and educational level were significantly associated with insomnia symptoms. Furthermore, as the number of discrimination experiences increased, so did the prevalence of insomnia. Preventing workplace discrimination may improve workers' sleep health.
Background: Work-Family Conflict means that the demands of work and family roles cannot be met simultaneously, so one cannot concentrate on one's work or family role. This conflict can negatively affect mental health and cause insomnia symptoms. Methods: This study was conducted on 20,442 subjects. Insomnia symptoms were assessed using the Minimal Insomnia Symptom Scale, and other variables were assessed using the questionnaire method. Logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the effect of Work-Family Conflict on insomnia symptoms, and subgroup logistic regression analyses were also performed. Results: The number of people with insomnia symptoms was 4,322 (15.1%). Compared with Low Work-Family Conflict, the odds ratios (ORs) for the risk of insomnia symptoms were 1.84 (95% confidence interval: 1.56-2.16) in High work-to-family conflict, 1.16 (1.02-1.32) in High family-to-work conflict, and 3.19 (2.87-3.55) in High Work-Family Conflict. The ORs were higher for men than women in High WFC but higher for women than men in High Work-Family Conflict. Conclusions: The risk of insomnia symptoms was highest in High Work-Family Conflict.
Objectives : This study was to investigate the characteristics of the heart rate variability(HRV), types of insomnia and accompanying symptoms of 175 insomnia patients. Methods : For this study we carried out HRV, Inbody of 175 patients with insomnia who have come to Dongeui oriental hospital of Dongeui university from the period of Janaury 2008 to September 2010. We studied the association of the insomnia patients' age and gender with HRV, accompanying symptoms and the types of insomnia. The information of the accompanying symptoms and types of insomnia was based on each patients' progress note. Results : l. There was no significant differences in the characteristics of HRV between male and female. 2. The most frequent symptom shown among the insmonia patents' was headache(41.14%). 3. Comparing the symptoms between the gender, female patients had more dry mouth, alternative periodic chill and fever, and hot flush symptoms than the male patients. 4. Comparing the symptoms between the age groups(divided in two), the lower age group (20~59) had more dizziness and constipation symptoms than the higher age group (over 60). 5. Comparing the types of insomma between the age group, the higher age group (over 60) had more termination insomnia. 6. The types of insomnia of the entire insomnia patients were onset insomnia (73.1%), maintenance insomnia(20.6%), termination insomma(l7.1 %), shallow sleep (52.6%), listed by order of frequency. 7. The patients who takes hypnotics had more anorexia symptoms than the patients who doesn't take hypnotics. 8. There was no visible differences of the average fractal portrait between male and female. The age group of 20~30yrs. had the highest average fractal portrait, and the age group of 30~59yrs. the second highest, and the age group over 60yrs. the lowest. 9. The average of the regulation reserves of the autonomic nervous system(B2) - was lower than the regulation level of the ANS at the present (Bl). 10. When compared the priority of the function of the ANS, it showed that the proportion of HF($38.61{\pm}29.19%$)was the most, and than VLF($30.65{\pm}23.36%$), LF($20.04{\pm}19.13%$) the least. 11. The average of the compensation level of the central nervous system at present(Cl) - was lower than the compensation reserves of the CNS(C2). 12. The average of the control reserves of the cerebrum(D2) - was lower than the control level of the cerebrum at the present (Dl). 13. There was no visible differences between different sexes and ages in pulse rate. 14. The abdomen fat ratio above the line of the insomnia patients was 77.97% in male and 93.1% in female. Both sexes showed that insomnia patients had more abdomen fat that the standard, and female patients had more abd. fat than male patients. Conclusions : This study shows that the HRV of insomnia patients had no significant differences between gender. Fractal portrait, HF, LF and VLF of the insomnia patients are in inverse proportion to the age. The study of the Body Component Analysis showed that female had more abdomen fat than male, and both gender showed more abdomen fat than the standard. When looked into the accompanying symptoms of the insomnia patients, the symptoms show differences according to gender, age and hypnotics taking, as shown as below. In the entire patients, Headache was the most accompanying symptom. Female had more dry mouth, alternative periodic chill and fever, and hot flush symptoms than male. Higher age groups had more dizziness and constipation as accompanying symptoms than lower age groups. Patients who takes hypnotics had more anorexia than those who dont.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to investigate the prevalence of insomnia and to compare sleep patterns, demographic characteristics, and obstacles for sleep between women with and without insomnia. Methods: This was a descriptive study. Study participants were 1,679 Korean women aged over 20 years. Information on symptoms of insomnia, sleep patterns, and related factors was assessed by questionnaire. Symptoms of insomnia included difficulties in initiating and maintaining sleep and early morning awakening. Results: This study found that 32.0% of the study participants had insomnia, subjects with insomnia had bad sleep patterns compared to comparison group, lower educational level and menopause were closely related to insomnia, and noise, temperature, lighting, presence of bed partner, intake of caffeine, frequent urination, and pain or itching were associated with insomnia. Conclusion: This study suggests that insomnia is prevalent in women and closely associated with education level and menopausal status.
Objective The aim of this study was to report significant improvement of primary insomnia in a Soyangin Cold-related diarrhea accompanied by abdominal pain Symptomatic pattern Patient. Methods The patients were diagnosed with Soyangin Cold-related diarrhea accompanied by abdominal pain Symptomatology(身寒腹痛亡陰證) and treated with Hyungbangjihwang-tang(荊防地黃湯). The primary outcome measures for this study were condition of sleep using a questionnaire with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) Secondary outcome assessment included change of original symptoms such as patient's digestion, sweating and feces. Result The symptoms of primary insomnia improved by the end of the a treatment period without side effect. original symptoms were also changed. Conclusions This result show Hyungbangjihwang-tang(荊防地黃湯) can be used to treat primary insomnia in a Soyangin Cold related Mangeum Symptomatic Pattern accompanied by abdominal pain Symptomatology(身寒腹痛亡陰證). Meaning and process of primary insomnia are different according to Sasang Constitutions.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence, primary causes, and management of insomnia newly admitted patients in a university hospital. Subjects consisted of 168 adult patients (95 men and 73 women, 88 medical and 94 surgical patients) newly admitted to Gyeongsang National University Hospital from September 7 through September 27, 1996. Sleep patterns of all subjects in the usual nights before admission(UN), the previous night to admission(PN), the night on admission(ON), and the 5th night after admission(5N) were investigated using the Korean version of the St. Mary's Hospital Sleep Questionaire. In addition, all insomnia patients and their doctors and nurses in charge were interviewed by psychiatric residents. Additionally, their medical records were reviewed. Prevalence of insomnia were 22.6% in the UN, 42.9% in PN, 51.8% in ON, and 43.5% in 5N. The prevalence of insomnia was significantly increased immediately before and after admission. There were no significant differences in the prevalence of insomnia by age and sex. The most ammon primary causes of insomnia were somatic symptoms and psychological factors in PN, somatic symptoms and noise in ON and 5n. Only 17 (10.1%) of insomnia patients took medicstions for insomnia control(analgesics in 15, hypnotics in 2). These results shorred that the prevalence of insomnia was significantly increased on hospitalization due to somatic symptoms, environmental factors, and psychological factors, but nearly none were adequately managed.
Objectives: This study aimed to describe the use of traditional Korean medicine to relieve chest pain, insomnia, and dyspnea in a patient with unstable angina pectoris Methods: To relieve the symptoms, the patient was treated with a range of traditional Korean medicine, including acupuncture, moxibustion, and an herbal medicine (Gamiondam-tang-gagam). The numerical rating scale (NRS) was used to measure the patient's status and improvements in the frequency of symptoms. Results: After the treatment, the NRS score for chest pain, insomnia, and dyspnea decreased from 10 to 0. In addition, chest pain and insomnia almost subsided. Conclusions: This report suggests that Gamiondam-tang-gagam can be effective in relieving chest pain, insomnia, and dyspnea.
Insomnia is defined as an experience of inadequate or poor-quality sleeping habit, coupled with more than one of the following symptoms : having difficulty sleeping, waking up too early in the morning or not having sound sleep. Insomnia is one of the most common complications that stroke patients experience, which interfere the patients' recovery. The authors observed two improved cases of insomnia in stroke patients by administrating traditional Korean medicine. The patients suffered from insomnia with nocturnal irritation, constipation, petechia of the tongue, thready or weak pulse. These symptoms, were diagnosed as blood stasis and we administered Hyulboochucke-tang three times a day, to improve blood circulation to remove blood stasis. After the administration, nocturnal irritation disappeared and the insomnia improved. Based on this experience, it is considered that enhancing blood circulation to remove blood stasis can be applied to the treatment of insomnia that stroke patients suffer.
Objective: Case report of improvement in muscle pain, insomnia, and depression in a breast cancer patient using Ortho-Cellular Nutrition Therapy. Methods: A Korean woman in her 50s was diagnosed with breast cancer. After being diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer, her quality of life has greatly deteriorated due to the side effects of the drugs administered. Results: Symptoms of insomnia and muscle pain improved after nutritional therapy. Conclusion: Applying nutritional therapy to patients with the aforementioned condition can help alleviate symptoms.
Objectives: To examine effect of Korean medical treatment on patients with insomnia and correlations among changes in psychological scales before and after treatment. Methods: Medical records of 38 patients diagnosed with insomnia based on DSM-V who received Korean medical treatment (herbal-medication, acupuncture, Korean psychotherapy) for at least 8 weeks were retrospectively reviewed. Psychological scales including Insomnia Severity Scale (ISI), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI) were measured every four weeks and analyzed. Results: After eight weeks of treatment, ISI, BDI-II, BAI, STAI-X-1/2, and STAXI-S/T showed statistically significant decreases. Psychological scale pairs that showed a statistically significant correlation were ISI and BDI-IIㆍSTAI-X-1ㆍSTAI-X-2ㆍTA, BDI-II and BAIㆍSTAI-X-1ㆍSTAI-X-2ㆍAX-I, BAI and STAI-X-1ㆍSTAI-X-2ㆍSAㆍTA, STAI-X-1 and STAI-X-2, SA and TA, and TA and AX-I. In women, the improvement of AX-C was high. The improvement in AX-I score was significant when the disease duration was more than one year. A lower pretreatment BAI value predicted a greater decrease in ISI score after treatment. Conclusions: Korean medical treatment including herbal medicine, acupuncture, and Korean psychotherapy was effective in improving insomnia symptoms and accompanying symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and anger. In the future, more in-depth follow-up research is needed on the mechanisms by which various psychological problems (depression, anxiety, anger, etc) cause and worsen insomnia and the psychological symptoms secondary to insomnia.
