  • The following case study suggests strongly the efficacy of Danggwisusan and acupuncture therapy in the treatment of patients with severe contusion and tissue injury of the liver and kidney. The chief symptoms of this case were severe pain in the right side, purpura hemorrhagica, insomnia and third degree bums at the shoulder and face. Analysis of blood chemistry indicated high AST, high ALT, high BUN, high creatine, high creatine kinase and high LDH. Fallowing medication of the patient with Danggwisusan, the symptoms and indexes for tissue injury decreased rapidily within the first week. This results support a potential role for Danggwisusan in the treatment of severe contusion with tissue injury of the liver and kidney.

  • UL-syndrome(鬱證) is a syndrome of emotional depression and various physical symptoms generally due to chronic psychological stress, without constitutional abnormality. These are cases of female patients suffering from headache, chest discomfort, heart burning, insomnia, dyspepsia, anorexia, fatigue and some other minor symptoms due to chronic stress. We diagnosed these cases as UL-syndrome and treated them with oriental medicine, specifically Gamisoyosan(加味逍遙散). This paper describes the symptoms that the patients suffered, the treatment used, and identifies stages in the development of UL-syndrome, and suggests a stage in which Gamisoyosan is efficacious.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences of skin disease, particularly Acne between the rotating shift work nurses and the nurses on a fixed day schedule. Methods : Questionnaries were distributed to 30 rotating shift work nurses(the rotating group) and 34 nurses on a fixed day schedule(the daytime group). The questionnaris included questions on general health concepts, insomnia skin disease(particularly Acne), gastroenteric trouble, menstrual irregularity. Result : 1. There was significant difference on skin disease(particularly Acne) between two groups. 2. There was no significant relation between Gastroenteric trouble and Acne. But, in particular, there was significant relation between Constipation, Gastritis and Acne. 3. There was no significant relation between menstrual irregularity and Acne. 4. In Acne group, more than 70% felt the necessity of treatment, but only 2.5% used Korean Oriental Medical therapy. Conclusion : Disorder of circadian rhythm affects the skin disease(particularly Acne) more than Gastroenteric trouble and menstrual irregularity. But in this study, the total number of the nurse is not enough. So we need more accurate study about the aspects of skin disease. And about the Acne, publicity of Korean Oriental Medical therapy is required.

  • Objectives: This study investigated significant factors that influence functional evaluation of stroke so as to be a fundamental data for estimating prognosis of stroke patients. Methods: 204 patients were studied within 7 days of admission, after the diagnosis of stroke through brain CT scan, brain MRI scan and clinical observations. They were hospitalized in the oriental medical hospital of Dongeui University from February to July in 2001. They were examined at the early stage of onset, after 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks, and measured for average mark and the degree of improvement by using the Activity Index. Results: Ischemic stroke, past history of stroke, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, risk factor of obesity, non-professional emergency treatment and hospitalizing time after 1 day from onset, high blood pressure, tachycardia pulse and high blood sugar in abnormal vital sign in acute stage, conscious, cognitive or communication disorder, motor aphasia, dysphagia, constipation for more than 3 days, urinary incontinence, visual field defect, insomnia, and chest discomfort in early stage of onset had a negative influence on functional evaluation. Conclusions: Type of stroke, past history, risk factors, emergency treatment and hospitalizing time after onset, abnormal vital sign and intercurrent symptoms in Acute stage were relevant factors in predicting functional evaluation of stroke.

  • Stellate ganglion block therapy is widely practiced in pain clinics for a wide variety of diseases(numbering over 150). The precise mechanisms are unknown, but it has been said that the systemic effect of the stellate ganglion block may improve the hypothalamic circulation and thus restoring the homeostasis of the body. We have administered stellate ganglion block for the treatment and cure of the following examples of ailments idiopathic hypertension, allergic rhinitis, constipation, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome. The causes of these diseases are unclear except that they are recognized as nervous disorders. However in clinical field, the effect of stellate ganglion block appears clearly. In this study 13 patients were treated only with stellate ganglion block; once daily for l5 days. The outcome of the treatments were as follows: 6 patients had excellent results, 5 patients had good results and the remaining 3 with poor results. We conclude that stellate ganglion block appears to be a good choice as the treatment for a number of nervous disorders.

He has suffered from PTSD symptoms, such as intrusive distressing recollection of his past traffic accident, social avoidance, insomnia and depression. Music therapy, which is conducted by a psychiatrist and a music therapist, was applied. • Awareness during general anesthesia occurs in approximately 0.1-0.2% of cases; nevertheless, particular attention is required because it can lead to critical complications including insomnia, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. To prevent these complications, bispectral index (BIS) and end-tidal anesthetic gas (ETAG) concentration monitoring are commonly used to examine patient consciousness during surgery. In the present case, an 80-year-old man was scheduled for total gastrectomy. Anesthesia was maintained using desflurane 4.0-5.0% vol, oxygen, and nitrous oxide. The authors simultaneously monitored BIS, which was maintained between 37 and 43, and ETAG, which was maintained between 0.9 and 1.2 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC). After the operation, however, the authors were surprised to learn that the patient complained of awareness during anesthesia. Although BIS and ETAG concentration monitoring are useful in preventing awareness during anesthesia, they cannot be completely trusted. Even though BIS was maintained at approximately 40 and ETAG at 0.7-1.3 MAC, awareness during anesthesia occurred.
