  • The automotive industry is currently trying to develop light- weight vehicle for both improvement of fuel efficiency and reduction of environmental pollution. For the reduction of vehicle weight, the substitution of aluminum for steel has been increased. However, the change of material causes a significant problem with respect to the method of joining. In this paper, strength of several aluminum joining methods such as spot welding, metal insert gas(MIG) welding, adhesive bonding was evaluated by performing lap test.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate brazing characteristics of the braze joint between superhard alloy particles and carbon steel. Two types of insert metals that made by mechanical alloying process were selected for this study. One is composed of Cu, Zn and Ag(MIM-1) and the other one is composed of Cu, Zn, Ag and Cd.(MIM-2) The chemical compositions of these insert metals were similar to AWS BAg-20 and BAg-2a system. And the commercial insert metals(CIM-1, CIM-2) were also evaluated for the comparative study. The characterization of the insert metals were conducted by wettability tests, shear tensile test and microstructural analyses. The results indicated that wettability tests displayed that MIM-1 and CIM-1 insert metals had the larger wetting angle than MIM-2 and CIM-2 and the wetting angle of the MIM-1 showed higher value than that of CIM-1. However these values are less than $25^{\circ}$ that is recommended for standard value for usual insert metals. The highest value of shear tensile tests was obtained from the brazed joint that made by MIN-1 and the value was $2.29{\times}10^2MPa$. This value is appeared to be higher or same as the commercial insert metals. The microstructures of the inserts metals were composed of Cu-rich proeutectic structure for matrix and Ag-rich eutectic structure. The braze joint between superhard alloy particles and carbon steel produced by the MIM-1(Ag-Cu-Zn) system showed sound joint showing stable microstructures. However there was also some porosities at the interface.

  • In this paper, we proposed E-plane structures to obtain the high insertion loss at stopband and show that T-equivalent and K-inverter of Triple E-plane structures are better than those of All-Metal Insert E-plane structures. To show the characteristics first order bandpass filter are designed and tested at X band.

  • Due to the superior corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of TiAl alloy at high temperature, it has been utilized as a turbine wheel of a turbocharger. The dissimilar metallic bonding is usually applied to combine the TiAl turbine wheel with the SCM440 structural steel which is used as a driving shaft. In this study, the TiAl and SCM440 joint were fabricated by using a friction welding technique. During bonding process, to suppress the martensitic transformation and the formation of cracks, which might reduce a strength of the joints, Cu was used as an insert metal to relieve stress. As a result, the intermetallic compounds (IMCs) layer was observed at TiAl/Cu interface while no IMC formation was formed at SCM440/Cu interface. Since understanding of the IMCs effects on the mechanical performance of welded joint is also essential for ensuring the reliability and integrity of the turbocharger system, we estimated the nanohardness of welded joint region through nanoindentation. The relation between the microstructural feature and its mechanical property is discussed in detail.

  • Increased demand for parts with micro-pattern structure made of metals, ceramics, and composites in various fields such as medical ultrasonic sensors, CT collimators, and ultra-small actuator parts. Micro powder injection molding (PIM) is a technology for manufacturing micro size, high volume, complex, precision, net-shape components from either metal or ceramic powder. In the present study, a standard mold with a variable insert core capable of producing various micro patterns was investigated. An injection molding test was performed on a standard mold using a line type micro-pattern core having an aspect ratio of 2, a slenderness ratio of 70, a pattern size of $200{\mu}m$, and a pattern spacing of $150{\mu}m$. During the filling process, the deformation of the mold with large aspect ratio and slenderness ratio was analyzed by the experiment and the numerical simulation according to the position of the gate. We proposed a mold structure that minimizes mold deformation by gate modification and enables uniform pattern filling behavior.
