Joining of AIN ceramics to W and Cu by active-metal brazing method was tried with use of (Ag-Cu)-Ti alloy as insert-metal. Joints were produced under various conditions of temperature, holding time and Ti-content in (Ag-Cu) alloy Reaction and microstructural development in bonded interface were investigated through observation and analysis by SEM/EDS, EPMA and XRD. Joint strengths were measured by shear test. Bonded interface consists of two layers: an insert-metal layer of eutectic Ag- and Cu-rich phases and a reaction layer of TiN. Thickness of reaction layer increases with bonding temperature, holding time and Ti-content of insert-metal. It was confirmed that the growth of reaction layer is a diffusion-controlled process. Activation energy for this process was 260 KJ/mol which is lower than that for N diffusion in TiN. Maximum shear strength of 108 MPa and 72 MPa were obtained for AIN/W and AIN/Cu joints, respectively. Relationship between processing variables, joint strength and thickness of reaction layer was also explained.

Coculture of HSC with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) is one of used methods to increase cell numbers before transplant to the patients. However, because of difficulties to purify HSCs after coculture with BM-MSCs, it needs to develop a method to overcome the problem. In the present study, we have examined whether a culture insert placed over a feeder layer might support the expansion of HSCs within the insert. $CD34^+/ $ cells isolated from the umbilical cord blood by using midiMACS were divided into three groups. A group of 1 $\times$$10^5$ cells were grown on a culture insert without feeder layer (Direct). The same number of HSCs was directly cocultured with BM-MSCs (Contact). The third group was placed onto an insert below which BM-MSCs were grown (Insert). To distinguish feeder cells from HSCs, BM-MSCs was pre-labeled fluorescently with PKH26 and 1 $\times$$10^5$ cells were seeded in the culture dishes. After culture for 13 days, the expansion factor (x) of HSCs that were grown without feeder layer (Direct) was $26.6 \pm 8.4.$ In contrast, the number of HSCs directly cocultured with feeder layer was 59.6 $\pm$ 0.5 and that of HSCs cultured onto an insert was $46.9 \pm 8.4.$ The percentage of BM-MSCs cells remained being fluorescent was $97.9 \pm 0.3%$ after culture. Immune-phenotypically large proportion of cultured cells were founded to be differentiated into myeloid/monocyte progenitor cells. The ability of BM-MSCs, fetal lung, cartilage and brain tissue cells to support ex vivo expansion of HSCs was also examined using the insert. After 11 days of coculture with each of these cells, the expansion factor of HSCs was 15.0, 39.0, 32.0 and 24.0, respectively. Based upon these observations, it is concluded that the coculture method using insert is very effective to support ex vivo expansion of HSCs and to eliminate the contamination of other cells used to coculture wth HSCs.
In this paper, we propose a machine vision algorithm for inspecting inserts which are used for milling and turning operations. Major defects of the inserts are breakage and crack on insert surfaces. Among the defects, breakages on the face of the inserts can be detected through three stages of the algorithm developed in this paper. In the first stage, a multi-layer perceptron is used to recognize the inserts being inspected. Edge detection of the insert image is performed in the second stage. Finally, in the third stage breakages on the insert face are identified using Hough transform. The overall algorithm is tested on real specimens and the results show that the algorithm works fairly well.

A computer-aided alloy-designing technique to develop the insert metal for transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding was applied to high aluminum Ni-base superalloys. The main procedure of a mathematical programming method was to obtain the optimal chemical composition through rationally compromising the plural objective performances of insert metal by a grid-search which involved data estimation from the limited experimental data using interpolation method. The objective function Z which was introduced as an index of bonding performance of insert metal involved the melting point, hardness (strength), formability of brittle phases and void ratio (bonding defects) in bond layer as the evaluating factors. The contour maps of objective function Z were also obtained applying the interpolation method. The compositions of Ni-3.0%Cr-4.0%B-0.5%Ce (for ${\gamma}$/${\gamma}$/${\beta}$ type alloy) and Ni3.5%Cr-3.5%B-3%Ti (for ${\gamma}$/${\gamma}$ type alloy) which optimized the objective function were determined as insert metal. SEM observations revealed that the microstructure in bond layers using the newly developed insert metals indicated quite sound morphologies without forming microconstituents and voids. The creep rupture properties of both joints were much improved compared to a commercial insert metal of MBF-80 (Ni-15.5%Cr-3.7%B), and were fairly comparable to those of base metals.
This study was undertaken to investigate the friction welding of A2024-T6 aluminum alloy and SM45C carbon steel using insert metals. The relationships among the friction welding conditions, the tensile strength of joints, the hardness distribution of welds, the microstructure of welds and the tensile fracture surfaces were mainly investigated through this experiment. When the A6063-T5 aluminum alloy of insert metal was used, the maximum tensile strengh of joint was obtained. In this case, the maximum joint efficiency was 75.3 percent and in the case of unusing the insert metals, it was 37.7 percent. Optimal welding conditions were N=2000rpm, P$_1$=40MPa, P$_2$=140MPa, t$_1$=1.0sec and t$_2$=5sec.
To know the bonding phenomena of Ti/Cu brazed joint, a characteristic of microstructures in bonding interlayer of vacuum brazed pure Ti to Cu has been studied in the temperature range from 1088 to 1133K for various bonding times using Ag-28wt%Cu filler metal. Also intermediate phases formed in bonded interlayer and behavior of layer growth have been investigated. The obtained results in this study are as follows: 1) Liquid insert metal width at the each brazing temperature was proportional to the square root of brazing time, and it was considered that the liquid insert metal width was controlled by the diffusion rate process of primary .alpha.-Cu formed at the Ti side. 2) Intermediate phases formed near the Ti interface were .betha.-Ti and intermetallic compounds TiCu, Ti$_{2}$Cu, Ti$_{3}$Cu, and TiCu. 3) .betha.-Ti formed in Ti base metal durig brazing transformed to lamellar structure, .alpha.-Ti + Ti$_{2}$Cu. The structure came from the eutectoil decomposition reaction in cooling. And the width of .betha.-Ti layer was proportional to the square root of brazing time, and it was considered that the growth of .betha.-Ti layer was controlled by interdiffusion rate process in .betha.-Ti. 4) The layer growth of TiCu, Ti$_{3}$Cu$_{4}$ and TiCu, phases formed near the Ti interface was linerface was linearly proportional to the brazing time, and it was considered that the layer growth of these phases was controlled by the chemical reaction rate at the interface.
Microstructures and tensile properties in arc brazed joints of ferritic stainless steel, 429EM using Cu-8.6%Al insert metal was investigated as function of brazing current. The brazing speed was fixed at 800mm/min and brazing current varied in the range of 80A to 120A. The initial phase of filler metal was Cu single phase. However, the insert metal structures of brazed joints was composed of Cu matrix and intermetallic compound such as ${\gamma}_1(Al_4Cu_9)$, and flower-shape Fe-Cr. The fraction of ${\gamma}_1(Al_4Cu_9)$ phase was similar with 80A and 100A brazing currents while that of brazed with 120A was decreased. On the other hand, the fraction of Fe-Cr phase increased with increasing of the brazing current. A reaction layer at the base metal/insert metal interface was observed and this reaction layer was thickened with increasing of the brazing current. In the brazed joints with the current lower than 100A, crack was grew up along the interface which was perpendicular to the tensile stress, and then, passed through the insert metal in the final stage of fracture. As the brazing current increased to 120A, fracture occurred at the base metal.
In this work, we introduce various bonding technologies for 3D package and suggest Insert-Bump bonding (ISB) process newly to stack multi-layer chips successively. Microstructure of Insert-Bump bonding (ISB) specimens is investigated with respect to bonding parameters. Through experiments, we study on find optimal bonding conditions such as bonding temperature and bonding pressure and also evaluate in the case of fluxing and no-fluxing condition. Although no-fluxing bonding process is applied to ISB bonding process, good bonding interface at $270^{\circ}C$ is formed due to the effect of oxide layer breakage.
Recently there is an increased interest in joining of ceramics to metals and brazing now an accepted method of joining for a wide variety of ceramic to metal combination. The present research work is aimed at establishing the basis of the metal-ceramic joining of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ to STS 304 with using Cu-7.5wt% Zr insert metals. Also the microstructures of the brazed joints were observed by using optical microscope and SEM and the reaction products were analyzed by using EDX, WDX and XRD. As a result, the following findings were obtained. The reaction layers of the brazed joints of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ to STS 304 are composed of four layers at the bonded interlayer. Double reaction layers are formed at the interface of $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ insert metal. Layer I was composed of ZrO$_{2}$ particles, Fe-Cr-Ni compounds in Cu matrix, while layer II ZrO$_{2}$ band phase containing Fe-Cr-Ni compounds.
