This paper presents a study of low frequencies volume velocity vibration control of a smart panel in order to reduce sound transmission. A distributed piezoelectric quadratically shaped polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer film is used as a uniform force actuator and an array of $4\;{\times}\;4$ accelerometer is used as a volume velocity sensor for the implementation of a single-input single-output control system. The theoretical and experimental study of sensor-.actuator frequency response function shows that this sensor-actuator arrangement provides a required strictly positive real frequency response function below about 900 Hz. Direct velocity feedback could therefore be implemented with a limited gain which gives reductions of about 15 dB in vibration level and about 8 dB in acoustic power level at the (1,1) mode of the smart panel. It has been also shown that the shaping error of PVDF actuator could limit the stability and performance of the control system.

Thermoforming is one of the most versatile and economical processes available for shaping polymer products, but obtaining a uniform thickness of the final product using this method is difficult. Heater power adjustment is very important because the thickness distribution depends strongly on the distribution of the sheet temperature. In this paper, the steady-state optimum distribution of heater power is first ascertained by a numerical optimization to obtain a uniform sheet temperature. The time-dependent optimal heater input is then determined to decrease the temperature difference through the direction of the thickness using the response surface method and the D-optimal method. The optimal results show that the time-dependent optimum heater power distribution gives an acceptable uniform sheet temperature in the forming temperature range by the end of the heating process.

In this paper, a new guidance law to reduce sensitivity to the initial heading errors is proposed. In order for shaping the input weights over the flight, we introduce the distribution functions expressed in terms of time-to-go and its inverse term. By applying the optimal control theory with the synthesized weights, the homing guidance law is derived. Also the characteristics of the proposed law are examined. Various computer simulations show the good performance of the proposed guidance.

This paper presents the idea of a smart load that can adjust the input power flow based on the intermittent power available from RESs (Renewable Energy Resources) to regulate the line voltage, and draw a constant power from the grid. To this effect, an innovative power flow controller is presented based on a Resistive ES (Electric Spring) in combination with a PEAT (Power Electronics based Adjustable Transformer), which can effectively shape the load power flow at the subnetwork level. With a PEAT incorporated in the step down transformer at the grid side, the proposed controller can supply non-critical loads through local RESs, and the critical loads can draw a relatively constant power from the grid. If there is an abundance of power produced by the RESs, the controller can supply both non-critical loads and critical loads through the RES, which significantly reduces the power demand from the grid. The principle, practicality, stability analysis, and controller design are presented. In addition, simulation results show that the power flow controller performs well in shaping the load power flow at the subnetwork level, which decreases the power demand on the grid. Experimental results are also provided to show that the controller can be realized.

In this paper we propose a controller design method, called Quasi-LQG/$H_{\infty}$/LTR for nonlinear servo systems with hard nonlinearities such as Coulomb friction, dead-zone. Introducing the RIDF method to model Coulomb friction and dead-zone, the statistically linearized system is built. Then, we consider $H_{\infty}$ performance constraint for the optimization of statistically linearized systems, by replacing a covariance Lyapunov equation into a modified Riccati equation of which solution leads to an upper bound of the LQG performance. As a result, the nonlinear correction term is included in coupled Riccati equation, which is generally very difficult to thave a numerical solution. To solve this problem, we use the modified loop shaping technique and show some analytic proofs on LTR condition. Finally, the Quasi-LQG/$H_{\infty}$/LTR controller for a nonlinear system is synthesized by inverse random input describing function techniques (ITIDF). It is shown that the proposed design method has a better performance robustness to the hard nonlinearity than LQG/$H_{\infty}$/LTR method via simulations and experiments for the timing-belt driving servo system that contains the Coulomb friction and dead-zone.

This paper presents a robust air-to-fuel ratio (AFR) control algorithm for managing exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems. In order to handle production tolerance, deterioration and parameter-varying characteristics of the EGR system, quantitative feedback theory (QFT) is applied for designing the robust AFR control algorithm. A plant model of EGR system is approximated by the first order transfer function plus time-delay (FOPTD) model. EGR valve position and AFR of exhaust gas are used as input/output variables of the plant model. Through engine experiments, parameter uncertainty of the plant model is identified in a fixed engine operating point. Requirement specifications of robust stability and reference tracking performance are defined and these are fulfilled by the following steps: during loop shaping process, a PID controller is designed by using a nominal loop transmission function represented on Nichols chart. Then, the frequency response of closed-loop transfer function is used for designing a prefilter. It is validated that the proposed QFT-based AFR control algorithm successfully satisfy the requirements through experiments of various engine operating points.

Many types of robot systems are used in the mass production line of thin film solar cells and flat panel displays. There are some issues such as the deflection and the vibration of the end-effector because robots handle large and heavy substrates at high speed. Heavy payload and high speed cause much vibration because the end-effector (fork) is made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer because of its light weightiness and sufficient stiffness. This study performs a dynamic simulation of an 8.5G solar cell substrate handling robot, including rigid and flexible bodies and a vibration controller. The fifth polynomial trajectory and the zero vibration derivative input shaping algorithm are applied. The vibration reduction is also proved in the experiments.

In this paper, a new radiating structure with a multi-layered two-dimensional metallic disk array was proposed for shaping the flat-topped element pattern. It is an infinite periodic planar array structure with metallic disks finitely stacked above the radiating circular waveguide apertures. The theoretical analysis was in detail performed using rigid full-wave analysis, and was based on modal representations for the fields in the partial regions of the array structure and for the currents on the metallic disks. The final system of linear algebraic equations was derived using the orthogonal property of vector wave functions, mode-matching method, boundary conditions and Galerkin's method, and also their unknown modal coefficients needed for calculation of the array characteristics were determined by Gauss elimination method. The application of the algorithm was demonstrated in an array design for shaping the flat-topped element patterns of $\pm$20$^{\circ}$ beam width in Ka-band. The optimal design parameters normalized by a wavelength for general applications are presented, which are obtained through optimization process on the basis of simulation and design experience. A Ka-band experimental breadboard with symmetric nineteen elements was fabricated to compare simulation results with experimental results. The metallic disks array structure stacked above the radiating circular waveguide apertures was realized using ion-beam deposition method on thin polymer films. It was shown that the calculated and measured element patterns of the breadboard were in very close agreement within the beam scanning range. The result analysis for side lobe and grating lobe was done, and also a blindness phenomenon was discussed, which may cause by multi-layered metallic disk structure at the broadside. Input VSWR of the breadboard was less than 1.14, and its gains measured at 29.0 GHz. 29.5 GHz and 30 GHz were 10.2 dB, 10.0 dB and 10.7 dB, respectively. The experimental and simulation results showed that the proposed multi-layered metallic disk array structure could shape the efficient flat-topped element pattern.

Recently, a spherical pendulum attached to an end-effector of a robot manipulator has been frequently used for a test bed of residual vibration suppression control in a multi-dimensional motion. However, there was no automatic tracking system to detect the current bob position on-line, and there was inconvenience to not be able to store the bob position in real time and plot the trajectory. In this study, we developed a two-dimensional, real-time bob-detecting system using a digital USB camera, of which the key is hardware component design and software C programming for fast image processing and interfacing. The developed system was applied to residual vibration suppression control of a two-dimensional spherical pendulum that is attached at the end-effector of a two degree-of-freedom SCARA robot, and the effectiveness of the developed system has been demonstrated.
