  • To achieve high performance speed regulation, a robust adaptive speed controller is proposed for the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) subject to parameter uncertainties and input saturations in this paper. A nonlinear adaptive control is introduced to compensate the PMSM speed tracking errors due to uncertainties, disturbances and control input saturation constraints. By combining the adaptive control and the nonlinear robust control based on the interconnection and damping assignment (IDA) strategy, a new robust adaptive control is designed for speed regulation of PMSM. Stability and robustness of the closed-loop control system involved with the constrained control inputs rather than unconstrained control inputs are validated. Simulations for PMSM control in the presence of uncertainties and saturations nonlinearities show that the proposed approach is effective to regulate speed, and the average tracking error using the proposed approach is at least 32% smaller than the compared methods.

  • In this paper, we study the consensus problem for multi-agent systems with input saturations. The goal of consensus is to achieve a swarming behavior of multi-agent systems by reaching the agreement through information exchange. This paper considers agents modeled by first-order dynamics with input saturations. In order to guarantee the global convergence of the agents, it is assumed that the agents are stable. Moreover, considering the disturbances, we propose the PI based duplex control method to achieve the consensus. The proposed P controller and I controller are composed of different information network. Then, we investigate the conditions of the information networks and the control gains of P, I controllers to achieve the consensus applying the Lyapunov stability theorem and the Lasalle's Invariance Principle. Finally, we conduct the simulations to validate the theoretical results.

  • This paper discusses the containment control problem for multi-agent systems with input saturations. The goal of the containment control is to obtain swarming behavior by driving follower agents into the convex hull which is spanned by multiple leader agents. This paper considers multiple leader agents moving at the same constant speed. Then, to solve the containment problem for moving leaders, we propose a PI-based distributed control algorithm. We next analyze the convergence of follower agents to the desired positions. Specifically, we apply the integral-type Lyapunov function to take into account the saturation nonlinearity. Then, based on Lasalle's Invariance Principle, we show that the asymptotic convergence of error states to zero for any positive constant gains. Finally, numerical examples with the static and moving leaders are provided to validate the theoretical results.

  • In this paper, we study the containment control problem for second-order multi-agent systems, which consists of multiple leaders and followers. The goal is to drive the followers toward the convex hull spanned by the leaders. Thus, the swarm behavior can be obtained by controlling the entire group by the leaders. This paper considers the leaders move at a constant speed and the followers have input saturations. Moreover, we assume that the followers can exchange information with neighbors, and only relative state information is available. Under these assumptions, we propose the Proportional-Integral based distributed control algorithm to solve the containment control problem with moving leaders. Moreover, based on Lasalle's invariance principle, the conditions for the control gains that guarantee the convergence of the followers to the convex hull spanned by the leaders are investigated, and it was shown that it can be designed only using the system parameter. Finally, the simulations are conducted to validate the theoretical result.

  • In this paper, a multivariable robust controller for a boiler-burbine system is designed by using a modified LQG/LTR method. From the known nonlinear dynamic model, a linearized model is obtained with the saturations at both input magnitude and input varying rate. The modeling error is analyzed at various operation points. A new dynamics augmentation method in the LQG/LTR method is suggested which can be applied to LQG/LTR method to reject the input and output disturbances and to follow reference inputs under modeling errors. The good performance of the designed controller is shown by simulations in various conditions.

  • In this paper, the CLQR(Constrained LQR) controller, which considers the actuator saturation in a cross-product term of a given performance index for an automotive active suspension control has been proposed. The effects of actuator saturations have been reflected directly in the states by using the linear relation between the control input and states. The method proposed here is more effective and intuitive compared with the conventional schemes. The CLQR has been applied to designing an automotive active suspension control system to verify its effectiveness and practical aspects.

  • This paper proposes a saturation compensating method by embedding pseudo-random code information in wavelet packet based colorization algorithm. In the color-to-gray process, an input RGB image is converted into YCbCr images, and a 2-level wavelet packet transform is applied to the Y image. And then, color components of CbCr are embedded into two sub-bands including minimum amount of energy on the Y image. At this time, in order to compensate the color saturations of the recovered color image during the printing and scanning process, the maximum and minimum values of CbCr components of an original image are also embedded into the diagonal-diagonal sub-band by a form of pseudo-random code. This pseudo-random code has the maximum and minimum values of an original CbCr components, and is expressed by the number of white pixels. In the gray-to-color process, saturations of the recovered color image are compensated using the ratio of the original CbCr values to the extracted CbCr values. Through the experiments, we can confirm that the proposed method improves color saturations in the recovered color images by the comparison of color difference and PSNR values.

  • In this paper, we propose a new color image enhancement method to improve the color saturation as well as luminance contrast in the YCbCr color space. The proposed method uses the maximum color difference table to compensate the perceived saturation changes due to luminance contrast changes. To improve the color saturation, the method first calculates the weighting factor by using the maximum color difference table and then multiplies the weighting factor to the input color difference signals. In this step, it maps color difference signals to proper color region to prevent the color distortion by considering the correlation of color saturations depending on the luminance and hue. The experimental results show that our method effectively improves color saturation compared to the conventional methods.

  • A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrain has more than one energy source including a high-voltage electric battery. However, for a high voltage electric battery, the average current is relatively low for a given power level. Introduced to increase the voltage of a HEV battery, a compact, high-efficiency boost converter, sometimes called a step-up converter, is a dc-dc converter with an output voltage greater than its input voltage. The inductor occupies more than 30% of the total converter volume making it difficult to get high power density. The inductor should have the characteristics of good thermal stability, low weight, low losses and low EMI. In this paper, Mega Flux® was selected as the core material among potential core candidates. Different structured inductors with Mega Flux® were fabricated to compare the performance between the conventional air cooled and proposed potting structure. The proposed inductor has reduced the weight by 75% from 8.8kg to 2.18kg and the power density was increased from 15.6W/cc to 56.4W/cc compared with conventional inductor. To optimize the performance of proposed inductor, the potting materials with various thermal conductivities were investigated. Silicone with alumina was chosen as potting materials due to the high thermo-stable properties. The proposed inductors used potting material with thermal conductivities of 0.7W/m·K, 1.0W/m·K and 1.6W/m·K to analyze the thermal performance. Simulations of the proposed inductor were fulfilled in terms of magnetic flux saturation, leakage flux and temperature rise. The temperature rise and power efficiency were measured with the 40kW boost converter. Experimental results show that the proposed inductor reached the temperature saturation of 107℃ in 20 minutes. On the other hand, the temperature of conventional inductor rose by 138℃ without saturation. And the effect of thermal conductivity was verified as the highest thermal conductivity of potting materials leads to the lowest temperature saturations.

  • Consensus, that aims to converge the states of agents to the same states through information exchanges between agents, has been widely studied to control the multi-agent systems. In real systems, the measurement variables of each agent may be different, the loss of information across communication may occur, and the different networks for each state may need to be constructed for safety. Moreover, the input saturation and the disturbances in the system may cause instability. Therefore, this paper studies the PID(Proportional-Integral-Derivative)-based consensus control to achieve the swarm behavior of the multi-agent systems considering the heterogeneous state information, the input saturations, and the disturbances. Specifically, we consider the multiple follower agents and the single leader agent modeled by the second-order systems, and investigate the conditions to achieve the consensus based on the stability of the error system. It is confirmed that the proposed algorithm can achieve the consensus if only the connectivity of the position graph is guaranteed. Moreover, by extending the consensus algorithm, we study the formation control problem for the multi-agent systems. Finally, the validity of the proposed algorithm was verified through the simulations.
