  • We have developed a model for estimating the parameters of viscous materials from indirect tensile tests for asphalt. This is a simple Burger nonlinear rheological two-cell model or standard model. At the same time, we begin to develop a more versatile and complex multi-cell model. The simple model is validated using experimental load-displacement results from laboratory tests: The recorded displacements are used as input values and the measured force data are simulated with the model. The optimal model parameters are estimated using the Levenberg-Marquardt method and a very good agreement between the experimental results and the model calculations is shown. However, not all parts of the model are active in the loading phase of the experiment, so we extended the validation of the model to the simulation of the relaxation behaviour. In this stage, the other model parameters are activated and the simulation results are consistent with the literature. At this stage, we have estimated the parameters only for the two-cell uniaxial model, but further work will include results for the multi-cell model.

  • A non-overlap boosted-clock charge pump(NBCCP) with internal pumping capacitor, an advantageous circuit from a minimizing point of TFT-LCD driver IC module, is proposed in this paper. By using the non-overlap boosted-clock swinging in 2VDC voltage, the number of pumping stages is reduced to half and a back current of pumping charge from charge pumping node to input stage is also prevented compared with conventional cross-coupled charge pump with internal pumping capacitor. As a result, pumping current of the proposed NBCCP circuit is increased more than conventional cross-coupled charge pump, and a layout area is decreased. A proposed DC-DC converter for TFT-LCD driver IC is designed with $0.18{\mu}m$ triple-well CMOS process and a test chip is in the marking.

  • Due to the scaling down of the dielectrics thickness, the leakage currents arising from electron tunneling through the dielectrics has become the major technical barrier. Thus, much works has focused on the development of high k dielectrics in both cases of memories and CMOS fields. Among the high-k materials, $Al_2O_3$ considered as good candidate has been attracting much attentions, which own some good properties as high dielectric constant k value (~9), a high bandgap (~2eV) and elevated crystallization temperature, etc. Due to the easy control of ion energy and flux, low ownership and simple structure of the inductively coupled plasma (ICP), we chose it for high-density plasma in our study. And the $BCl_3$ was included in the gas due to the effective extraction of oxygen in the form of BClxOy compound. In this study, the etch characteristic of ALD deposited $Al_2O_3$ thin film was investigated in $BCl_3/N_2$ plasma. The experiment were performed by comparing etch rates and selectivity of $Al_2O_3$ over $SiO_2$ as functions of the input plasma parameters such as gas mixing ratio, DC-bias voltage and RF power and process pressure. The maximum etch rate was obtained under 15 mTorr process perssure, 700 W RF power, $BCl_3$(6 sccm)/$N_2$(14 sccm) plasma, and the highest etch selectivity was 1.9. We used the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to investigate the chemical reactions on the etched surface. The Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) was used for elemental analysis of etched surface.

  • The noise from the elevated lines of rail transit has become a growing problem. This paper presents a new method for the rapid prediction of the structure-borne noise from steel or composite bridges, based on the receptance and Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA), which is essential to the study of the generation mechanism and the design of a low-noise bridge. First, the vertical track-bridge coupled vibration equations in the frequency domain are constructed by simplifying the rail and the bridge as an infinite Timoshenko beam and a finite Euler-Bernoulli beam respectively. Second, all wheel/rail forces acting upon the track are computed by taking a moving wheel-rail roughness spectrum as the excitation to the train-track-bridge system. The displacements of rail and bridge are obtained by substituting wheel/rail forces into the track-bridge coupled vibration equations, and all spring forces on the bridge are calculated by multiplying the stiffness by the deformation of each spring. Then, the input power to the bridge in the SEA model is derived from spring forces and the bridge receptance. The vibration response of the bridge is derived from the solution to the power balance equations of the bridge, and then the structure-borne noise from the bridge is obtained. Finally, a tri-span continuous steel-concrete composite bridge is taken as a numerical example, and the theoretical calculations in terms of the vibration and noise induced by a passing train agree well with the field measurements, verifying the method. The influence of various factors on wheel/rail and spring forces is investigated to simplify the train-track-bridge interaction calculation for predicting the vibration and noise from steel or composite bridges.

  • A somewhat detailed energy spectra in terms of the track length resulting from coupled electron-photon slowing down are calculated throughout the ICRU standard tissue with uniformly distributed gamma sources of $^{60}Co\;and\;^{137}Cs$, respectively. The calculation was accomplished by utilizing the latest available cross-section data as input to a carefully optimized computer code. In this report, the calculational method is described in detail. Furthermore, results of calculations are given in graphical form. The results show that the energy spectrum defined in terms of differential track length has about same shape although the energies of gamma source are different. The discontinuity in the energy spectrum appears at the energy of $T=(1/T_0+2/m_0c^2)^{-1}$, because a primary photon can not be degrade to a point below this energy.

  • Wavelength conversion devices are essential to build an expanding all-optical network, and various types of wavelength conversion techniques are being researched. Among them, wavelength conversion based on the cross phase modulation in a directionally coupled semiconductor optical amplifier has been introduced and the concept has been experimentally proved. In this paper, a split-step method is applied to properly model the mentioned wavelength converter in the time-domain and various characteristics have been analyzed. It is shown that the present modeling approach can explain the results of the reported experimental results. Furthermore the wavelength conversion is shown to be well performed when the input signal wave and the converted wave travels in the opposite direction. The simulation shows that the positive and negative chirping appear simultaneously at both the leading and trailing of edges of the optical pulse.

  • This paper presents a miniaturized 65 nm CMOS 30~46 GHz wideband amplifier. To minimize the chip area, coupled inductors are used in the matching networks. The measurement shows that the fabricated amplifier exhibits 9.3 dB of peak gain, 16 GHz of 3 dB bandwidth, and 42 % fractional bandwidth. The measured input and output return losses were more than 10 dB at 35.8~46.0 GHz and 28.6~37.8 GHz, respectively. The chip consumes 42 mW at 1.2 V. The measured group delay variation is 19.1 ps within the 3 dB bandwidth and the chip size excluding the pads is $0.09mm^2$.

  • A series of experiments using atmospheric-pressure non-thermal plasma coupled with transition metal catalysts were performed to remove ethylene from agricultural storage facilities. The non-thermal plasma was created by dielectric barrier discharge, which was in direct contact with the catalyst pellets. The transition metals such as Ag and $V_2O_5$ were supported on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. The effect of catalyst type, specific input energy (SIE) and oxygen content on the removal of ethylene was examined to understand the behavior of the hybrid plasma-catalytic reactor system. With the other parameters kept constant, the plasma-catalytic activity for the removal of ethylene was in order of $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ from high to low. Interestingly, the rate of plasma-catalytic ozone generation was in order of $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ > $Ag/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, implying that the catalyst activation mechanisms by plasma are different for different catalysts. The results obtained by varying the oxygen content indicated that nitrogen-derived reactive species dominated the removal of ethylene under oxygen-lean condition, while ozone and oxygen atoms were mainly involved in the removal under oxygen-rich condition. When the plasma was coupled with $V_2O_5/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, nearly complete removal of ethylene was achieved at oxygen contents higher than 5% by volume (inlet ethylene: 250 ppm; gas flow rate: $1.0Lmin^{-1}$; SIE: ${\sim}355JL^{-1}$).

  • The optical characteristics of a terahertz (THz) antenna-coupled bolometer (ACB) detector were evaluated using a pulsed quantum cascade laser (QCL) and radiation blackbody sources. We investigated a method for measuring the responsivity and noise-equivalent power (NEP) of the THz detector using two different types of light sources. When using a QCL source with a frequency of 3 THz, the average responsivity of 24 devices was $1.44{\times}10^3V/W$ and the average NEP of those devices was $3.33{\times}10^{-9}W/{\surd}Hz$. The average responsivity and NEP as measured by blackbody source were $1.79{\times}10^5V/W$ and $6.51{\times}10^{-11}W/{\surd}Hz$, respectively, with the measured values varying depending on the light source. This was because the output power of each light source was different, with the laser source being driven by a pulse type wave and the blackbody source being driven by a continuous wave. The power input to the THz sensor was also different. Futhermore, the responsivity and NEP values measured using band pass filter (BPF) were similar to those measured when using only THz windows. It was found that ACB sensor responds normally in the THz region to both the laser and the blackbody source, and the method was confirmed to effectively evaluate the characteristics of the THz sensor.

  • It is well known that electromagnetic (EM) waves are mode converted to electrostatic (ES) waves in inhomogeneous plasmas. We examine this issue in a three-dimensional multi-fluid numerical model. First, we derive a set of coupled linear wave equations when a one-dimensional inhomogeneous density profile is assumed in a cold and collisionless plasma. The massive ions are considered as fixed because we are interested in high frequency waves in plasmas. It is shown that the EM mode satisfies the 0th order modified Bessel equation near the resonant region where the frequency matches the local electron plasma frequency. It is expected that the EM waves are coupled and damped to the ES waves owing to the logarithmic singular behavior at such resonances. Second, we numerically test the same case in a 3-D multi-fluid model. An impulsive input is assumed to excite EM waves in the inhomogeneous 3-D box model. The wave spectra of electric and magnetic fields are presented and compared with the analytical results. Our results suggest that the EM energy is irreversibly converted into the ES energy wherever the resonant condition is satisfied. Finally we discuss how the mode conversion appears in both electric and magnetic fields by analyzing time histories of each component. We also compare our results with MHD wave coupling. It is numerically confirmed in this study that the coupling of EM and ES waves is similar to that of compressional and transverse MHD waves.
