  • Humic acids react with chlorine to produce Trihalomethanes(THMs), known as carcinogens, during disinfection, the last stage in water purification. Currently, the removal of organic humic acids is considered the best approach to solve the problem of THM formation. Accordingly, the current study examined the adsorption of organic compounds of humic acids onto an inorganic carrier prepared from oyster shell waste. The adsorbent used was activated oyster shell powder(HAP) and silver ion-exchanged oyster shell powder(HAP-Ag), with CaCO$_3$ as the control. The adsorbates were phthalic acid, chelidamic acid, catechol, dodecylpyridinium chloride(DP), and 2-ethyl phenol(2-EP). The adsorption experiments were carried out in a batch shaker at $25^{\circ}C$ for 15 hours. The equilibrium concentration of the adsorbate solution was analyzed using a UV spectrophotometer and the data fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model. Since the solution pH values were found to be greater than the pKa values of the organic compounds used as adsorbates, the compounds apparently existed in ionic form. The adsorptive affinities of the organic acid and phenolic compounds varied depending on the interaction of electrostatic forces, ion exchange, and chelation. More carboxylic acids and catechol, rather than DP and 2-EP, were adsorbed onto HAP and HAP-Ag. HAP and HAP-Ag exhibited a greater adsorptive affinity for the organic compounds than CaCO$_3$, used as the control.

  • IMO to issue some restricted maritime legislation for reducing the adverse environmental impacts arising from such ship exhaust emissions. According to the IMO policy, every ship entering the Baltic SECAs has to equip the gas cleaning scrubber. The discharged waste solution by gas cleaning scrubber contains many types of salts, which to recover some valuable materials before disposal. This study try to achieve valuable salts including AN and AS throughout a few process such as selective organic solvents salting out, low temperature extraction and thermal evaporation. Amongst them, Thermal evaporation with repetition extraction using inorganic solvent was the most optimum to purify the extracted AN. This valuable salt was evaluated by Elemental analysis and Differential scanning calorimetry.

  • The application possibility of an alternative new method with low energy consumption was studied for the eco-friendly fabrication of foamed glasses from waste glasses. As a result, fabricating temperature can be reduced under $300^{\circ}C$ without using various expensive inorganic oxidants. The foamed glass can be fabricated at a proper mixing ratio of the waste glass powder, water glass, little surfactant and bubble stabilizer by induction heating method. In the experimental range, the assured optimal condition is 4 min heating on the induction machine with a steel-container ($100mm{\times}100mm{\times}20mm$) and followed by evaporating and drying process for 11 min with 110 g of glass powder, 80 g of water glass, 3 g of surfactant and 0.2 g of bubble stabilizer. When the foamed glass was fabricated at the optimal condition, the density of the glass was $0.85g/cm^3$ and the heat conduction was $0.052W/h{\cdot}K$. In addition, the compressive strength of the glass was above $50kg/cm^2$.

  • The availability of large quantities of waste woods provides an impetus for investigating woody biomass potential uses. Polyurethane (PU) foams are prepared with reacting isocyanates and polyols, and are used. in various industry fields. Thus, lignocellulosic waste raw-materials are proposed as replacement for synthetic polyol to PU foam formulation. In this study PU foams were manufactured from liquefied woods, methanediisocyanate(MDI), catalyst, foaming stabilizer, and viscosity aids. The polyol content, isocyanate.hydroxyl group (NCO/OH) ratio, and water content were varied to evaluate their effects on the foaming and water absorption of the PU foams. Less than 400 Molecular weight. of polyethylene glycol(PEG) and 1 to 3 solvent to woody raw-material ratio were desirable for liquefying woody materials. Liquefying rate was increased with more than 3 % addition of inorganic and organic catalysts and raising reaction temperature more than $150^{\circ}C$. Addition of starch enhanced liquefying of woody materials. Fourty percents of starch resulted in about 90% liquefying rates. Foaming rates were increased with increasing moisture contents of liquefied wood. Moisture contents of 0.6% resulted in 5 time-foaming rates, and seven percents of moisture contents more than 30 time-foaming rates. But, an increase in water content may result in a decrease in cross-links between wood polyol and isocyanate, because the NCO/OH ratio is constant. Increasing moisture contents have significantly decreased density of PU foams. The optimum water content should be about 2.5% or less in this adopted condition.

  • In this study, ozone was adopted for the reduction and stabilization of waste sludge from the municipal sewage treatment plant. The waste sludge used in the experiments was primary sludge, excess sludge and a mixture of the two. The sludge cells and flocs were disrupted by ozonation resulting in the reduction of TSS and VSS concentrations. In the case of the primary sludge with a concentration of 20 gTS/L, the TSS and VSS concentrations were reduced 28%, 33% and the TCOD concentration was reduced 20% respectively. The consumption of ozone was $0.18gO_3/gSS$. In the case of the excess sludge with a concentration of 7.5 gTS/L, the TSS and VSS concentrations were reduced 37%, 41%, and the TCOD concentration was reduced 19% respectively. The consumption of ozone was $0.33gO_3/gSS$. In the case of the mixed sludge of 9.3 gTS/L, the TSS and VSS concentrations were reduced by 45%, 53%, and the TCOD was reduced 26% respectively. The desirable consumption of ozone was $0.27gO_3/gSS$. As ozonation proceeded, the level of SCOD increased due to the release of intracellular materials. However TCOD was reduced due to mineralization resulting from the transformation of organic materials to inorganic materials.

  • The granite melting concept, which was suggested by Gibb's group for the closing of a deep borehole, was experimentally checked for KURT granite. The granite melting experiments were performed in two pressure conditions of atmospheric melting with certain inorganic additives and high pressure melting formed by water vaporization. The results of atmospheric tests showed that KURT granite started to melt at a lower temperature of $1,000^{\circ}C$ with NaOH addition and that needle shaped crystals were formed around partially melted crystals. In high pressure tests, vapor pressure was increased by adding water with maximum pressure of about 400 bars. KURT granite was partially melted at $1,000^{\circ}C$ when vapor pressure was low. However, it was not melted at vapor pressures higher than 200 bars. Therefore, it was determined that high pressure with a small amount of water vapor more effectively decreased the melting point of granite. Meanwhile, high temperature and high pressure vapor caused severe corrosion of the reactor wall.

  • This study suggested a new method to stabilize molten salt wastes generated from the pyre-process for the spent fuel treatment. Using conventional sol-gel process, $SiO_2-Al_2O_3-P_2O_5$ (SAP) inorganic material that is reactive to metal chlorides were prepared. In this paper, the reactivity of SAP with the metal chlorides at $650{\sim}850$, the thermal stability of reaction products and their leach-resistance under the PCT-A test method were investigated. Alkali metal chlorides were converted into metal aluminosilicate($LixAlxSi1-_xO_{2-x}$) and metal phosphate($Li_3PO_4\;and\;Cs_2AlP_3O_{10}$) While alkali earth and rare earth chlorides were changed into only metal phosphates ($Sr_5(PO_4)_3Cl\;and\;CePO_4$). The conversion rate was about $96{\sim}99%$ at a salt waste/SAP weight ratio of 0.5 and a weight loss up to $1100^{\circ}C$ measured by thermogravimetric analysis were below 1wt%. The leach rates of Cs and Sr under the PCT-A test condition were about $10^{-2}g/m^2\;day\;and\;10^{-4}g/m^2\;day$. From these results, it could be concluded that SAP can be considered as an effective stabilizer for metal chlorides and the method using SAP will give a chance to reduce the volume of salt wasteform for the final disposal through further researches.

  • To utilize canned oyster processing waste water effectively, this study was carried out to prepare instant powdered soup using the waste water (IPSW), Instant powdered souu from oyster hot-water extracts (IPSE) was prepared by mixing hot-water extracts powder (15 g) with table salt (5 g), cream powder (19 g), milk replacer (12 g), wheat flour (20 g), corn flour (15 g), starch (5 g), glucose (7.5 g) and onion powder (1.5 g). In preparing IPSW, mixed powder from wash water and boiling liquid waste, instead of powder from hot-water extracts and table salt, was added (powder from boiling liquid waste: powder from wash water= 12: 8) and other additives were added in proportion to those in the IPSE, The IPSW consists mainly of carbohydrates (about $72\%$). It was not different from the IPSE. The volatile basic nitrogen, viable cell counts, coliform group of the IPSW contains 33.4 mg/100g, $2.2\times10^4CFU/g$, <180 MPN/100g, respectively, and its water activity has 0.257. So it was a hygienically safe and conservable instant food. The main fatty acids of IPSW were 16: 0 and 18: 1n-9. Its chemical score of protein was $61.4\%$ and its main inorganic matter was iron. According to a sensual evaluation, in contrast to the IPSE, the IPSW had a bit lower aroma but better taste, It was concluded from the above chemical and sensory evaluation that even the boiling liquid waste which had been mostly abandoned because of its high table salt content can be used as a good material for instant powdered soup if it's powdered and mixed adequately with powder from wash water, and its table salt content is properly adjusted.

  • The quarrying and utilization of natural building stones such as granite and marble are rapidly emerging in developing countries. A huge amount of wastes is being generated during the processing, cutting and sizing of these stones to make them useable. These wastes are disposed of in the open environment and the toxic nature of these wastes negatively affects the environment and human health. The growth trend in the world stone industry was confirmed in output for 2019, increasing more than one percent and reaching a new peak of some 155 million tons, excluding quarry discards. Per-capita stone use rose to 268 square meters per thousand persons (m2/1,000 inh), from 266 the previous year and 177 in 2001. However, we have to take into consideration that the world's gross quarrying production was about 316 million tons (100%) in 2019; about 53% of that amount, however, is regarded as quarrying waste. With regards to the stone processing stage, we have noticed that the world production has reached 91.15 million tons (29%), and consequently this means that 63.35 million tons of stone-processing scraps is produced. Therefore, we can say that, on a global level, if the quantity of material extracted in the quarry is 100%, the total percentage of waste is about 71%. This raises a substantial problem from the environmental, economical and social point of view. There are essentially three ways of dealing with inorganic waste, namely, reuse, recycling, or disposal in landfills. Reuse and recycling are the preferred waste management methods that consider environmental sustainability and the opportunity to generate important economic returns. Although there are many possible applications for stone waste, they can be summarized into three main general applications, namely, fillers for binders, ceramic formulations, and environmental applications. The use of residual sludge for substrate production seems to be highly promising: the substrate can be used for quarry rehabilitation and in the rehabilitation of industrial sites. This new product (artificial soil) could be included in the list of the materials to use in addition to topsoil for civil works, railway embankments roundabouts and stone sludge wastes could be used for the neutralization of acidic soil to increase the yield. Stone waste is also possible to find several examples of studies for the recovery of mineral residues, including the extraction of metallic elements, and mineral components, the production of construction raw materials, power generation, building materials, and gas and water treatment.
