This study describes the effects of a thrust labyrinth seal applied to the backside of a centrifugal impeller on the axial thrust force for high speed turbomachinery. The bulk flow model using Neumann's equation calculates the seal cavity pressures and leakage flow rate of the thrust labyrinth seal based on three configurations: teeth-on-rotor (TOR), teeth-on-stator (TOS), and interlocking labyrinth seal (ILS). Prediction results show that the ILS is superior to the TOR and TOS in terms of leakage flow rate. A mathematical model of a centrifugal impeller with a thrust labyrinth seal on its backside calculates the force components corresponding to the impeller inlet, shroud, impeller backside outer, backside seal, and backside inner pressures. A summation of the force components renders the total axial thrust force acting on the centrifugal impeller. The Newton-Raphson numerical scheme iteratively calculates the pressures and leakage flow rate through the impeller wall gap. The prediction results reveal that the leakage flow rate and total axial thrust force increase with rotor speed, and the ILS significantly decreases the leakage flow rate, whereas it slightly increases the axial thrust force when compared to TOR and TOS. Increasing the seal clearance causes an increase in the leakage flow rate and a slight decrease in the axial thrust force with the ILS.

This work provided a review of three techniques-(1) spectrochemical, (2) electrochemical, and (3) spectroelectrochemical-for molten salt medias. A spectroelectrochemical system was designed by utilizing this information. Here, we designed a spectroelectrochemical cell (SEC) and calibrated temperature controllers, and performed initial tests to explore the system's capability limit. There were several issues and a redesign of the cell was accomplished. The modification of the design allowed us to assemble, align the system with the light sources, and successfully transferred the setup inside a controlled environment. A preliminary run was executed to obtain transmission and absorption background of NaCl-CaCl2 salt at 600℃. It shows that the quartz cuvette has high transmittance effects across all wavelengths and there were lower transmittance effects at the lower wavelength in the molten salt media. Despite a successful initial run, the quartz vessel was mated to the inner cavity of the SEC body. Moreover, there was shearing in the patch cord which resulted in damage to the fiber optic cable, deterioration of the SEC, corrosion in the connection of the cell body, and fiber optic damage. The next generation of the SEC should attach a high temperature fiber optic patch cords without introducing internal mechanical stress to the patch cord body. In addition, MACOR should be used as the cell body materials to prevent corrosion of the surface and avoid the mating issue and a use of an adapter from a manufacturer that combines the free beam to a fiber optic cable should be incorporated in the future design.
Histology and ultrastructure of the mantle epidermis in the ark shell, Scapharca broughtonii are described using light and electron microscopy. The mantle of the ark shell is composed of outer epidermis, connective tissue and inner epidermis. Both epidermis are simple and consists of supporting cells, ciliated cells and secretory cells. Connective tissue is composed of mainly collagen and muscle fibers. The supporting cells in the inner epidermis are usually columnar and covered with microvilli. The ciliated cell have cilia and microvilli on the free surface, and numerous tubular mitochondria are observed in the apical cytoplasm. Secretory cells are mainly observed in the outer epidermis, and it can be divided into four types of A, B, C and D with morphological features of the secretory granules. Type A cells of mucous cell are found in the marginal and central mantle. And these cells contains numerous secretory granules of non-bounded and low electron density. Type B cells contains numerous rough endoplasmic reticula, well-developed Golgi complex and secretory granules of membrane-bounded and high electron density. Secretory granules of type C cells are divided into fibrous core layer and homogeneous peripheral layer. Type D cells are found in the outer epidermis of the central and umbonal mantle. And secretory granules of these cells are divided into homogeneous core layer and granular peripheral layer. This results suggest that the outer and inner epidermis of the mantle are related with shell formation and cleaning of the mantle cavity, respectively.
The pH changes in 4 small cavities prepared at the facial inner dentin and lingual outer dentin of the cervical and apical portion of root filled with calcium hydroxide pastes were investigated. Forty extracted permanent teeth with single canal were instrumented with step-back method, and then 4 small cavities were prepared. Two inner dentin cavities were cut a distance of about 1.0mm from the canal wall and two outer dentin cavities were cut to a depth of about 0.5mm from the root surface. Root canals and prepared cavities were flushed with 17% EDTA, and then irrigated with 5% NaOCl to remove smear layer. Teeth were randomly divided into four groups. Control group was not filled and the remaining other groups were filled with mixture of calcium hydroxide and distilled water, Vitapex$^{(R)}$ paste and Pulpdent$^{(R)}$ paste respectively. The pH change of the dentin in each cavity was measured at 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 60, 90 days with pH microelectrode(WPI Co., USA). The results were as follows : 1. The groups obturated with Pulpdent$^{(R)}$ paste and Aqueous calcium hydroxide produced the increased pH level at 1 day and maintained plateau over next 3weeks and decreased after 3weeks. 2. The group obturated with Vitapex$^{(R)}$ paste observed no significant pH change until 2weeks and slight increased pH at 3weeks and sequential increasing after 3weeks. But, the pH in the group obturated with Vitapex$^{(R)}$ paste remained significantly below the pH measured in the other two experimental groups(P<0.05). 3. All experimental groups showed pH level similar to control group after 28 days. 4. The pH of outer dentin is slightly higher than that of inner dentin. There is no significant difference in pH level between apical and cervical dentin throughout the duration of the experiment, though apical dentin showed slightly higher pH than cervical dentin at 1 day(P<0.05).
This study aimed to investigate the autumn spawning by bitterling (A. rhombeus) inside mussel (Unio douglasiae) and the adaptation characteristics at the Bongseocheon Stream of Mankyeonggang River. The survey was carried out between August 2015 and July 2016. The spawning season was from September to November, and 17-75 (36.2 ± 16.44) eggs were found from mature females. During the survey period, 476 mussels were collected, 129 (27.1%) of spawned A. rhombeus. Mussels that spawned eggs, embryos, and larva of A. rhombeus (46.3 ± 4.55 mm, n = 129) were larger than than those that did not spawn (42.6 ± 8.51 mm, n = 347). The appearance frequency of A. rhombeus larva before and after the formation of lens was 99.8% (n = 597) vs. 0.2% (n = 1) from October 2015 to March 2016, 25.6% (n = 23) vs. 74.4% (n = 67) in April 2016, 0% (n = 0) vs. 100% (n = 40) on May 2016. The number of eggs, embryos, and larvae of A. rhombeus inside the mussels were 1-18 (5.6 ± 3.81). The number and appearance frequency of A. rhombeus eggs, embryos, and larvae inside the mussel according to mussel gill demibranchs position were 1 (0.01 ± 0.09, n = 1) and 0.78% in the left outer demibranch, 1-18 (2.33 ± 3.31, n = 63) and 48.84% in the left inner demibranch, 1-15 (2.97 ± 3.79, n = 76) and 58.91% in the right inner demibransh, and 1-12 (0.33 ± 1.71, n = 7) and 5.43% in the right outer demibransh. The highest frequency of the developmental position of eggs, embryos, and larvae occurred 71.8% (n = 445) in lower part 3 (L3) before formation lens and 94.4% (n = 102) in L3 after formation lens, indicating that L3 was dominating position for eggs, embryos, and larvae. More eggs, embryos, and larvae of A. rhombeus were found more often in the inner demibranshs than outer demibranchs. Since A. rhombeus is a species that spawn in the autumn and thus avoids the competition with interspecific and glochidia. However, they have to spend the winter in low water temperature. Consequently, we assume that A. rhombeus have evolved toward embryonic diapause under the low water temperature before the formation of lens and spawning inside the supracranchial cavity to save the transit energy from the water space to the suprabranchial cavity after the achieving movement ability with the formation of lens.
Apical sealing is essential for the success of surgical endodontic treatment. Root-end cavity is apt to be contaminated with moisture or blood, and is not always easy to be dried completely. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of dry methods of retrocavity on the apical seal in endodontic surgery. Apical seal was investigated through the evaluation of apical leakage and adaptation of filling material over the cavity wall. To investigate the influence of various dry methods on the apical leakage, 125 palatal roots of extracted human maxillary molar teeth were used. The clinical crown of each tooth was removed at 10 mm from the root apex using a slow-speed diamond saw and water spray. Root canals of the all the specimens were prepared with step-back technique and filled with gutta-percha by lateral condensation method. After removing of the coronal 2 mm of filling material, the access cavities were closed with Cavit$^{(R)}$. Two coats of nail polish were applied to the external surface of each root. Apical three millimeters of each root was resected perpendicular to the long axis of the root with a diamond saw. Class I retrograde cavities were prepared with ultrasonic instruments. Retrocavities were washed with physiologic saline solution and dried with various methods or contaminated with human blood. Retrocavities were filled either with IRM, Super EBA or composite resin. All the specimens were immersed in 2% methylene blue solution for 7 days in an incubator at $37^{\circ}C$. The teeth were dissolved in 14 ml of 35% nitric acid solution and the dye present within the root canal system was returned to solution. The leakage of dye was quantitatively measured via spectrophotometric method. The obtained data were analysed statistically using one-way ANOVA and Duncan's Multiple Range Test. To evaluate the influence of various dry methods on the adaptation of filling material over the cavity wall, 12 palatal roots of extracted human maxillary molar teeth were used. After all the roots were prepared and filled, and retrograde cavities were made and filled as above, roots were sectioned longitudinally. Filling-dentin interface of cut surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows: 1. Cavities dried with paper point or compressed air showed less leakage than those dried with cotton pellet in Super EBA filled cavity (p<0.05). However, there was no difference between paper point- and compressed air-dried cavities. 2. When cavities were dried with compressed air, dentin-bonded composite resin-filled cavities showed less apical leakage than IRM- or Super EBA-filled ones (p<0.05). 3. Regardless of the filling material, cavities contaminated with human blood showed significantly more apical leakage than those dried with compressed air after saline irrigation (p<0.05). 4. Outer half of the cavity showed larger dentin-filling interface gap than inner half did when cavities were filled with IRM or Super EBA. 5. In all the filling material groups, cavities contaminated with blood or dried with cotton pellets only showed larger defects at the base of the cavity than ones dried with paper points or compressed air.

Dens evaginatus is a tooth with cylindrical enamel projection which forms a nodule on occlusal surface. It could be explained as outward overgrowth of inner enamel epithelium or localized hyperplasia of pulpal mesenchymal tissue during tooth development. A problem is that it is likely to be worn out or fractured by mastication ensuing pulpal inflammation. It is occasionally found on the lingual surface of upper anterior teeth as well, called talon cusp. Dens invaginatus is a tooth with deep lingual pit made by invagination of lingual enamel epithelium during tooth development while it is considered normal in terms of size and shape. Radiographically, a part of cervical enamel shows inward growth forming cavity and it is reasonable to say that the base is possibly open to pulpal cavity since they are very close. Talon cusp and dens invaginatus are relatively common abnormality of shape. However it becomes the opposite if the two exist in the same tooth. Once the talon cusp is broken by occlusal force or fissure between cusps is decayed, the complicated structure of canals makes the pulpal treatment difficult. Preventive treatments such as occlusal equilibrium and sealant, and regular oral examination should be preceded and thorough understanding of canal shape, using radiography, is required when pulpal treatment is necessary. This report is about a 9- year-old boy(lower left central incisor), a 8-year-old girl(upper right central incisor), and a 7-year-old boy(upper right central incisor), who have dens invaginatus and talon cusp in the same teeth. The first and the second patients are under pulpal treatments, and the last one is being observed showing no pathologic impressions.
We have investigated Pi 2 pulsations which were observed both on ground magnetometer array and by satellites. On November 9th in 1994, Pi 2 pulsations appeared globally on the 190/210 magnetometer chain and Hermanus station when two satellites(EXOS-D and ETS-VI) were located near the magnetic meridian of the 210 array. The local time of measurements covers from morning(LT=8.47hr) to afternoon(LT=20.3hr) and the bandwidth of peak frequency is found relatively small. The signals of the electric field are highly coherent with ground-based observations with the out of phase oscillations. However, the magnetic field measurement on the ETS-VI in the outer magnetosphere(L=6.60) shows no signature of Pi 2 pulsations over the same time interval and the correlation with any of the ground-based stations is found to be very weak, even through both satellites and magnetometer chain are located close to each other in local time. We suggest that this event may be a direct evidence of Pi 2 pulsations as virtual resonant modes which are localized in the plasmasphere(Lee 1996). The results show that the cavity mode oscillations can occur in the inner magnetosphere with less spectral noise compared to the outer magnetospheric case.
This study was designed to investigate the appearence and the characteristics of the apoptotic cells and the process of the joint cavity formation in mouse knee joint. Fetal mouse knee joints from 15 to 19 days of gestation were used. Paraffin-embedded serial sections, stained with H & E for light microscopic observation, Epon 812 embedded thin sections for electron microscopic observation and Lowicryl HM 20 embedded thin sections for immune-electron microscopic observation were prepared. Monoclonal antibodies to $\beta-tubulin$ and polyclonal antibodies to tissue transglutaminase were used for immune-electron microscopic study. The results obtained were as follows. 1. At 15 days of gestation, blood vessels, which have invaded in the mesenchymal cells, were present in the synovium, to form the joint cavity in the future. 2. At 16 days of gestation, the joint cleft was first appeared and several RBCs were present in the joint cleft. The invasion of blood vessels into the joint cleft was continuing, and apoptotic cells were present in the inner cell layer, adjacent to the joint cleft. Necrotic cells were also present in the outer cell layer; they were present 18 days of gestation, but apoptotic cells did not appear after 17 days of gestation. 3. In the apoptotic cells, transglutaminase were localized around vacuoles and the marginal site of the cytoplasm. 4. In the apoptotic cells, tubulin was around the endoplasmic reticulum and the marginal site of the cytoplasm. In the late stage of apoptotic cells, tubulin was localized diffusely in the cytoplasm. Tubulin was also strongly labeled around in the cytoplasm of the neighboring cell at which the apoptotic body was phagocytosed. Tubulin labeled particles were apparently increased in the seperated apoptotic bodies. On the basis of the above findings, it is proposed that during the development of the mouse knee joint, blood vessel invasion first occurs and then apoptosis and cell necrosis follow it. In the apoptotic cell, present in the synovium of the developing knee joint of the mouse. it is suggested that the redistribution of tubulin is associated with apoptotic process. And transglutaminase overexpressed in the apoptotic cell.
This study aims demonstrate the effect of chitosan, one of the natural chelator, on the ultrastructural changes in the mouse liver caused by $HgCl_2$. The experimental group was divided in two groups; group A and group B. The group A administrated $HgCl_2$ (5.0 mg/kg) to the oral. The group B treated with $HgCl_2$ (5.0 mg/kg) and chitosan (3%) solution, 2 times/day). Each group was observed 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours after treated $HgCl_2$ and chitosan. Histological changes of the livers were investigated by electron microscope. 1. Croup A Nuclear membrane was shrinked. The inner and outer membrane of the mitochondria were dilated. Destruction of lamellae of rough endoplasmic reticulum showed. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum showed over cytoplasm. 2. Group B Nuclear membrane was more rounded, The cristae of the mitochondria were almost normal shape and electron-density showed compacted. Dilation of inner cavity of rough endoplasmic reticulum showed at the pre-time but formed typical lamellae at the 48Hrs. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum showed over cytoplasm. Therefore, we concluded that chitosan has significantly protective effects in liver to harmful $HgCl_2$.
