Currently, 23 nuclear power plants are in operation at Kori, Uljin, Younggwang and Wolsong site and a reference deep geological disposal system has been developed for the spent fuels generated by them. The reference spent fuel for this disposal system has 4.5wt% of initial enrichment, 55 GWd/MtU of burn-up, and 40 years of cooling time. In this paper, to improve disposal efficiency and economic feasibility, the characteristics of spent fuels from nuclear power plants, such as type and burn-up, were reviewed. A disposal canister concept for shorter length and relatively lower burn-up spent fuels than the reference spent fuels was developed. Based on this canister concept, thermal analyses were carried out and a deep geological disposal concept was proposed. Measures of disposal efficiency such as unit disposal area and disposal density were compared between this disposal system and the reference disposal system. Also, economic feasibility, such as the volume reduction of copper, cast iron, and bentonite, was analyzed and the results of these analyses showed that the disposal system proposed in this paper has an efficiency of at least 20%. These results could be used for establishing spent fuel management policy and designing practical disposal systems for spent fuels.
The main purpose of this study is to analyse and explain the occupational pattems of Korean immigrants in Auckland, New Zealand, in order to understand how they are adapting to New Zealand society. We analysed the Korean telephone directory from 1992 to 1996 and listings of Korean businesses in the biweekly magazine 'Korea Town'. The bulk of Korean immigration started in 1991 when the New Zealand govemment opened up its immigration doors to non-Europeans. Clearly, recent Korean immigration has experienced exponential growth. The range of Korean's occupations has grown gradually compared to the growth of Korean immigration, from about 20 different kinds of occupations in 1992 to 55 in 1997. In 1992, there were only 37 korean businesses listed, but in 1997, there are about 636-a growth of over 1,600${\%}$. As we analysed all Korean businesses, we found that almost all Korean businesses and occupations have not penetrated the host society economy but reflect typical characteristics of ethnic businesses, in tems of capital, business operation, employees and customers being mainly Korean, Korean businesses are concentrated in the City Centre and North Shore. The concentration in North Shore reflects the concentration of Korean residents in this area, while Korean businesses in the City centre are mostly tourist industries(travel agencies, souvenir shops)and restaurants. The findings of this study closely reflect similar Westem studies on ethnic minority businesses. From this, we can conclude that Korean businesses at the moment reflect the initial stage of Korean communities in New Zealand.

The fishing conditions of flying squid, ommastrePhes barsram(Lesueur), in the North Pacific Ocean was studied based on the horizontal water temperature data, satellite data from NOAA and statistical data of flying squid fisheries which were collected from 1980 to 1984. The obtained results were as follows; 1. Since 1979, the Korean drift giIlnet fishery for flying squid was launched in North Pacific. Number of operating vessel and catch of flying squid increased gradually every year. The number of vessels were 111 and their annual catches were 42, 977 M/T in 1984. Therefore, Korean drift giIlnet fishery for this species has played an important role in the products of Korean high-sea fisheries. 2. In the beginning of the fisheries, fishing grounds was formed in the west of long. 1800E. In 1982, in consequence of the center which extended eastward, the fishing ground was formed long. 166$^{\circ}$W in the central North Pacific Ocean. Since 1983, the fishing grounds were formed as far as long. 161$^{\circ}$W. The range of general fishing season in the central North Pacific was from June to August. After september, fishing ground was shifted to the west, in the Northwestern Pacific. 3. The Predominant fishing season for the flying squid was August through January of the coming year. Optimum water temperature for flying sguid at surface layer in the Pacific Ocean ranged from 11 $^{\circ}$e to 17$^{\circ}$e in winter, 13$^{\circ}$e to 17$^{\circ}$e in spring, 12. 8$^{\circ}$C to 19.7$^{\circ}$e in summer and 1O.6$^{\circ}$e -18.7$^{\circ}$e in fall. 4. In summer, the Oceanographic condition in the North Pacific Ocean showed that the water temperature at surface layer was lower in 1980, 1983 and higher in 1981, 1982 and 1984 as compared with mean annual water temperature. 5. The characteristics df oceanographic conditions in the fluation, disformation, mixing and other factors of the Kuroshio and Oyashio currents, which have considerably influenced upon the water masses of the areas. 6. The data and information on surface thermal Structure interpreted from Infrared Satellite Imaginary from NOAA-7 and NOAA-8 are very available in estimating water temperature on the areas and investigating the major fishing grounds. 7. According to the fisheries statics of Japanese drift gilInet, the annual catches of flying squid considerably decreased from 225, 942 M/T in 1983 to 133, 217 M/T in 1984. 8. The fishing grounds in the central North Pacific in several fishing seasons were formed as follows: In June, the initial fishing season, the fishing grounds were formed in the vicinity of lat. 35 - 40oN, the central North Pacific east of 179$^{\circ}$E. In July, the fishing ground were formed in the wide arEa of the central North Pacific north of 400N and long. 174$^{\circ}$E-145$^{\circ}$W In Auguest, concentrative fishing operation carried out in :he central North Pacific north of 43$^{\circ}$N and East of 165$^{\circ}$W. On the other hand, in September, main fishing grounds were disappeared and moved to the west.
Construction of large-scale structures such as dams would be suggested actively to cope with change of flood characteristics caused by climate change. However, due to environmental, economic and political issues, dams are not ideally constructed. Thus flood damage reduction planning projects would get started including washland or detention pond for sharing the flood in basin. The washland made artificially by human being is an area of floodplain surrounded by bank to be intentionally inundated by overflowing through overflow structure adjacent to main channel during flood season. Flood reduction capacity at just downstream of each washland could be affected by type, length, and crest elevation of overflow structure in addition to shape of design hydrograph, storage volume of washland, etc.. In this study flood reduction effects of washland are estimated for overflow weir type and gate type to compare the results of flood reduction respectively subjected to given hydrograph in sample site, the Cheongmicheon stream. It has been shown that even if gate type at overflow structure could yield more flood reduction than overflow weir type, economic aspect such as initial cost, operation cost and maintenance cost should be considered to select the type of overflow structure because flood reduction rate by gate type could not be significant value from engineering point of view.

Cryogenic LNG(Liquefied Natural Gas) which is stored in the cylindrical storage tanks of $100,000m^3$ has very complex flow phenomena and the changes of thermal properties with exterior conditions and operation modes. These complex thermofluid behaviors are affected by the storage, exterior conditions of LNG, design specifications and heat transfer characteristics of tanks. Also, those have influence on the stable storage and supply of LNG in the storage tanks. Thus this study peformed the analysis on the 2-D heat transfer of the tank with exterior conditions, on the Cool Down Process in order to cool down the LNG Storage Tank at the initial normal state, and on the Filling Process considered for incoming and rising of LNG. The analysis on the Mixing LNG Storage was studied too. At last, the visualized program on the complex thermofluidodynamic analysis was developed on the basis of the above analyses. The development of this program becomes to be used to the basic design of the commercial tanks as well as to assure technical skill of the analysis on the thermal stability of the stored LNG in the LNG Storage Tank.

Background: This study aimed to develop the models for regional cardiac surgery centers, which take regional characteristics into consideration, as a policy measure that could alleviate the concentration of cardiac surgery in the metropolitan area and enhance the accessibility for patients who reside in the regions. Methods: To develop the models and set standards for the necessary personnel and facilities for the initial management plan, we held workshops, debates, and conference meetings with various experts. Results: After partitioning the plan into two parts (the operational autonomy and the functional comprehensiveness), three models were developed: the 'independent regional cardiac surgery center' model, the 'satellite cardiac surgery center within hospitals' model, and the 'extended cardiac surgery department within hospitals' model. Proposals on personnel and facility management for each of the models were also presented. A regional cardiac surgery center model that could be applied to each treatment area was proposed, which was developed based on the anticipated demand for cardiac surgery. The independent model or the satellite model was proposed for Chungcheong, Jeolla, North Gyeongsang, and South Gyeongsang area, where more than 500 cardiac surgeries are performed annually. The extended model was proposed as most effective for the Gangwon and Jeju area, where more than 200 cardiac surgeries are performed annually. Conclusion: The operation of regional cardiac surgery centers with high caliber professionals and quality resources such as optimal equipment and facility size, should enhance regional healthcare accessibility and the quality of cardiac surgery in South Korea.
This study is conducted about the system that reduces organism after fermenting food waste from a food waste disposal equipment, divides gas made when food waste is fermented into gas and water, and then sends gas to a reactor again, condenses water, and apply it to the MBR system with submerged MF hollow fiber membranes. A submerged MF hollow fiber membrane module was installed to a food waste disposal equipment and a water treatment system made by Bio Hitech Co,. Ltd. to process food waste generated from a staff cafeteria in a H institute for 90 days. For initial seeding of a food waste disposal equipment, 305 kg of rice bran, chaff, and sawdust as well as 1,648 kg of food were input during the operation, and 1,600 L of condensed wastewater occurred. Fermented by-product after finishing running a food waste disposal equipment was 386 kg and its reduction was shown to be 80%. The organism was processed by applying submerged MF hollow fiber membrane module to the MBR system of condensed wastewater, and the result shows reduction rates were BOD 99.9%, COD 97.5%, SS 98.6%, T-N 54.6% and T-P 34.7% and the total colon bacillus was perfectly eliminated.
An optical microphone based on a dual-core fiber collimator and a membrane type micromirror serving as an optical head and a reflective diaphragm respectively was implemented. The micromirror diaphragm is suspended by a thin silicon bar linked with a frame, thus it is subject to a displacement induced by acoustic waves. The optical head incorporating two collimators integrated in a single housing gives light to and receives it from the diaphragm, rendering the optical microphone structure simple and compact. This dual-core collimator having a slowing varying beam profile facilitates the initial alignment of the optical head with the diaphragm, especially the distance between them. For the assembled microphone, the static characteristics were investigated tofind the operation point defined as the optimum distance between the head and the diaphragm, and a frequency response with a variation of about $\pm$5 dB for the range of up to 3kHz was achieved.

Low temperature thermal desorption (LTTD) has become one of the cornerstone technologies used for the treatment of contaminated soils and sediments in the United States. LTTD technology was first used in the mid-1980s for soil treatment on sites managed under the Comprehensive Environmental Respones, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) or Superfund. Implementation was facilitated by CERCLA regulations that require only that spplicable regulations shall be met thus avoiding the need for protracted and expensive permit applications for thermal treatment equipment. The initial equipment designs used typically came from technology transfer sources. Asphalt manufacturing plants were converted to direct-fired LTTD systems, and conventional calciners were adapted for use as indirect-fired LTTD systems. Other innovative designs included hot sand recycle technology (initially developed for synfuels production from tar sand and oil shale), recycle sweep gas, travelling belts and batch-charged vacuum chambers, among others. These systems were used to treat soil contaminated with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxin with varying degrees of success. Ultimately, performance and cost considerations established the suite of systems that are used for LTTD soil treatment applications today. This paper briefly reviews the develpoment of LTTD systems and summarizes the design, performance and cost characteristics of the equipment in use today. Designs reviewed include continuous feed direct-fired and indirect-fired equipment, batch feed systems and in-situ equipment. Performance is compared in terms of before-and-after contaminant levels in the soil and permissible emissions levels in the stack gas vented to the atmosphere. The review of air emissions standards includes a review of regulations in the U.S. and the European Union (EU). Key cost centers for the mobilization and operation of LTTD equipment are identified and compared for the different types of LTTD systems in use today. A work chart is provided for the selection of the optmum LTTD system for site-specific applications. LTTD technology continues to be a cornerstone technology for soil treatment in the U.S. and elsewhere. Examples of leading-edge LTTD technologies developed in the U.S. that are now being delivered locally in global projects are described.
