  • Though conventional calorimetry methods such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) are used generally in measuring heat of fusion, T-history method has the advantages of a simple experimental apparatus and no requirements of sampling process, which is particularly useful for measuring thermal properties of inhomogeneous phase change materials (PCMs) in sealed tubes. However, random criteria (a degree of supercooling) used in selecting the range of latent heat release and neglecting sensible heat during the phase change process can cause significant errors in determining the heat of fusion. In the present study, it was shown that a 40% discrepancy exists between the original T-history and the present methods when analyzing the same experimental data. As a result, a reasonable modification to the original T-history method is proposed.

  • To design micro flow sensor varying depending on temperature of driving heater in the detector of Oxide semiconductor, Markov chain MCM(MCMCM), which is a kind of stochastic and microscopic method, was introduced. The formulation for the thermal transfer equation based on the FDM to obtain the MCMCM solution was performed and investigated, in steady state case. MCMCM simulation was successfully applied, so that its application can be expanded to a three-dimensional model with inhomogeneous material and complicated boundary.

  • To reduce the structural weight, thin-walled circular composite tube has been used as a main spar of high altitude-long endurance unmanned air vehicle(HALE UAV). Predicting the torsional response of stiffened circular spar is complex due to the inhomogeneous nature of section properties, which are dependent on fiber architecture and constituent material properties. The stiffener were placed in the top and bottom sectors of a tube to increase the torsional capabilities such as the rigidity and buckling strength. Numerical simulations were performed to estimate the effect of the stiffener on the torsional capacities. A static experimental test was performed on a stiffened tube, and the test results were compared with a numerical model. The numerical models showed good correlation and demonstrated the ability to predict the torsional capacity. Results presented herein will exhibit the effectiveness of stiffener on torsional strength and stiffness.

  • Amorphous alloys, in addition to being promising materials for a variety of practical applications, provide an excellent test bed for evaluating our understanding of the underlying physics on deformation in amorphous solids. Like many amorphous materials, amorphous alloys can exhibit either homogeneous or inhomogeneous deformation depending on the stress level. The mode of deformation has a strong influence on whether the material behavior is classified as ductile or brittle. It was observed that the characteristics of these deformations are largely dependent on the atomic-scale structures of the alloys and determine the amount of the plastic deformation prior to failure. In this study, the structural features that control the homogeneous deformation of amorphous alloys are outlined on the basis on experiments and molecular dynamics simulations.

  • This paper describes a concrete method for computing characteristic impedances and effective dielectric constants of the microstrip coupled lines without and with a dielectric overlay. The frequency-independent spectral domain method is used for the analysis of these lines. This method is a powerful, accurate, and numerically efficient approach for planar transmission line structure. For designing the optimal directional coupler, the velocities of even and odd mode must be equal but velocities of these two modes are different in the conventional coupled line which is inhomogeneous. The results show that these two velocities can be almost same according to variations of structural and material parameters in terms of the overlay(superstrate).

  • This paper is focused on the delamination analysis of a multilayered beam structure loaded in torsion under strain-path control. The beam under consideration has a rectangular cross-section. The layers of the beam are made of different viscoelastic materials which exhibit continuous inhomogeneity in longitudinal direction. Since the delamination is located inside the beam structure, the torsion moments in the two crack arms are obtained by modeling the beam as an internally static undetermined structure. The strain energy stored in the beam is analyzed in order to derive the strain energy release rate (SERR). Since the delamination is located inside the beam, the delamination has two tips. Thus, solutions of the SERR are obtained for both tips. The solutions are verified by analyzing the beam compliance. Delamination analysis with bending-torsion coupling is also performed. The solutions derived are timedependent due to two factors. First, the beam has viscoelastic behavior and, second, the angle of twist of the beam-free end induced by the external torsion moment changes with time according to a law that is fixed in advance.

  • In this article, vibrational behavior and wave propagation characteristics in (FG) functionally graded plates resting on Kerr foundation with three parameters is studied using a 2D dimensional (HSDT) higher shear deformation theory. The new 2D higher shear deformation theory has only four variables in field's displacement, which means has few numbers of unknowns compared with others theories. The shape function used in this theory satisfies the nullity conditions of the shear stresses on the two surfaces of the FG plate without using shear correction factors. The FG plates are considered to rest on the Kerr layer, which is interconnected with a Pasternak-Kerr shear layer. The FG plate is materially inhomogeneous. The material properties are supposed to vary smoothly according to the thickness of the plate by a Voigt's power mixing law of the volume fraction. The equations of motion due to the dynamics of the plate resting on a three-parameter foundation are derived using the principle of minimization of energies; which are then solved analytically by the Navier technique to find the vibratory characteristics of a simply supported plate, and the wave propagation results are derived by using the dispersion relations. Perceivable numerical results are fulfilled to evaluate the vibratory and the wave propagation characteristics in functionally graded plates and some parameters such wave number, thickness ratio, power index and foundation parameters are discussed in detail.

  • Fatigue strength, electrical conductivity and stress-corrosion-cracking resistance are considered as important factors at aircraft Al alloys, therefore Al7050 alloy has been developed to improve such properties. However, hammer-forged Al7050 parts showed the undesirable structures such as severe local grain coarsening and inhomogeneous material flow, resulted in the degraded mechanical properties. In this paper, process conditions are investigated for elimination of the grain coarsening and improved material flow during forging process by both of experiments and FEM analysis. Particular interest has been given to understand role of preform shape on the grain coarsening behavior and magnitude of the hammer forging load The use of preform has been beneficial for reduction of the forging load and elimination of the grain coarsening. However, in the cases of as received bar and the round bar, which was machined to 2.5mm thickness in surface layer, some degree of local grain coarsening behavior has been observed. The optimized preform shape could be properly designed by applying the FEM simulation.

  • $CaMoO_4:Tb^{3+}$ green phosphor powders and thin films were successfully prepared by using the solid-state reaction method and the radio-frequency magnetron sputtering technique, respectively. The crystalline structure of all phosphor powders with different $Tb^{3+}$ ion concentrations was found to be a tetragonal system with the maximum diffraction intensity at $28.58^{\circ}$, while that of the phosphor thin films, irrespective of the type of substrate, was amorphous. As for the phosphor powders, the grain particles showed the chain-like patterns with inhomogeneous size distribution, the excitation spectra were composed of a broad band peaked at 307 nm and two small narrow bands centered at 381 and 492 nm, and the highest green emission spectrum was observed at 0.01 mol of $Tb^{3+}$ ions. As for the phosphor thin films, the average transmittance exceeding 85% was measured in the 400~1,100 nm range and the optical band gap showed a significant dependence on the type of substrate.

  • This paper presents the plastic inhomogeneous deformation behavior of bimetal composite rods during the axisymmetric and steady-state extrusion process through a conical die. The rigid-plastic FE model considering frictional contact problem was used to analyze the co-extrusion process with material combinations of Cu/Al. Different cases of initial geometry shape for composite material were simulated under different conditions of co-extrusion process, which includes the interference and frictional conditions. The main design parameters influencing on deformation pattern are diameter ratio of the composite components and semi-die angle. Efforts are focused on the deformation patterns, velocity gradient, predicted forming load and the end distance through the various simulations. Simulation results indicate that there is an obvious difference of forming pattern with various diameter ratio and semi-die angle. The analysis in this paper is concentrated on the evaluation of the design parameters on the deformation pattern of composite rod.
