High temperature high cycle and low cycle fatigue deformation behavior of automotive heat resistant aluminum alloys (A356 and A319 based) were investigated in this study. The microstructures of both alloys were composed of primary Al-Si dendrite and eutectic Si phase. However, the size and distribution for eutectic Si phase varied: a coarse and inhomogeneous distributed was observed in alloy B (A319 based). A brittle intermethallic phase of ${\alpha}-Fe\;Al_{12}(Fe,Mn)_3Si_2$ was detected only in B alloy. Alloy B exhibited high fatigue life only under a high stress amplitued condition in the high cycle fatigue results, whereas alloy A showed high fatigue life when stress was lowered. With regard to the low-cycle fatigue result ($250^{\circ}C$) showing higher fatigue life as ductility increased, alloy A demonstrated higher fatigue life under all of the strain amplitude conditions. Fractographic observations showed that large porosities and pores near the outside surface could be the main factor in the formation of fatigue cracks. In alloy B. micro-cracks were formed in both the brittle intermetallic and coarse Si phasese. These micro-cracks then coalesced together and provided a path for fatigue crack propagation. From the observation of the differences in microstructure and fractography of these two automotive alloys, the authors attempt to explain the high-temperature fatigue deformation behavior of heat resistant aluminum alloys.

This study tried to examine the suitability of strip casting process such as PFC (Planar Flow Casting) method for soldering Au-Sn strip. The effect of heat treatment on the tensile behavior and mechanical properties of an Au-Sn strip was investigated through tensile test, micro hardness test, X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM, and TEM observations. It was apparent that 20-mm width Au-Sn strip could be well produced by using planar flow casting process. Tensile results showed that tensile strength increased from 338.3MPa to 310MPa and plastic strain improved from 0% to 1.5% with heat treatment ($170^{\circ}C$/70 hrs.). The microstructure of Au-Sn strip mainly consisted of two phases; $Au_5Sn(\zeta)$ and AuSn($\sigma$). It was also found that inhomogeneous amorphous local structure continuously changed to the homogeneous two phases microstructure with heat treatment. The fractographical observation after tensile test indicated the cleavage fracture mode of as-casted Au-Sn strip. On the other hand, the heat treated Au-Sn strip showed that fracture propagated along interface between brittle AuSn and ductile $Au_5Sn$ phases. The deformation behavior of strip casted Au-Sn alloy with microstructural evolution and the improve method for ductility of this alloy was also suggested.
In this work, two dimensional (2D) and quasi three-dimensional (quasi-3D) HSDTs are proposed for bending and free vibration investigation of functionally graded (FG) plates using hyperbolic shape function. Unlike the existing HSDT, the proposed theories have a novel displacement field which include undetermined integral terms and contains fewer unknowns. The material properties of the plate is inhomogeneous and are considered to vary continuously in the thickness direction by three different distributions; power-law, exponential and Mori-Tanaka model, in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. The governing equations which consider the effects of both transverse shear and thickness stretching are determined through the Hamilton's principle. The closed form solutions are deduced by employing Navier method and then fundamental frequencies are obtained by solving the results of eigenvalue problems. In-plane stress components have been determined by the constitutive equations of composite plates. The transverse stress components have been determined by integrating the 3D stress equilibrium equations in the thickness direction of the FG plate. The accuracy of the present formulation is demonstrated by comparisons with the different 2D, 3D and quasi-3D solutions available in the literature.
The development of strain localization within shear zones is frequently observed during soil deformation. In fact, the phenomenon appears to be more often the norm rather than the exception. Conceptually, any soil condition that renders negative work increment is prone to localization. In this study, a broad range of soil and loading conditions are investigated to test this criterion, including: dilative soil subjected to drained shear (standard case), contractive soil sheared under undrained conditions, cavitation in dilative soil in undrained shear, inhomogeneous soils, particle alignment in contractive soils made of platy particles, soils that experience particle crushing, and the shear of low-moisture and/or lightly cemented loose soils. Unique specimens and test procedures are designed to separately test each of these soil conditions in the laboratory According to experimental test results, soil specimens with post-peak strain softening behavior are prone to progressive failure, localization of deformations, and shear banding. The state of stress, the soil density, inherent mechanical and geometrical properties of soil particles, low water content, and heterogeneity can contribute to triggering strain localization. Considering all possible cases of localization, the best method to obtain the critical state line in the laboratory is to use contractive homogeneous specimens subjected to drained shear.
In this article, vibrational behavior and wave propagation characteristics in (FG) functionally graded plates resting on Kerr foundation with three parameters is studied using a 2D dimensional (HSDT) higher shear deformation theory. The new 2D higher shear deformation theory has only four variables in field's displacement, which means has few numbers of unknowns compared with others theories. The shape function used in this theory satisfies the nullity conditions of the shear stresses on the two surfaces of the FG plate without using shear correction factors. The FG plates are considered to rest on the Kerr layer, which is interconnected with a Pasternak-Kerr shear layer. The FG plate is materially inhomogeneous. The material properties are supposed to vary smoothly according to the thickness of the plate by a Voigt's power mixing law of the volume fraction. The equations of motion due to the dynamics of the plate resting on a three-parameter foundation are derived using the principle of minimization of energies; which are then solved analytically by the Navier technique to find the vibratory characteristics of a simply supported plate, and the wave propagation results are derived by using the dispersion relations. Perceivable numerical results are fulfilled to evaluate the vibratory and the wave propagation characteristics in functionally graded plates and some parameters such wave number, thickness ratio, power index and foundation parameters are discussed in detail.

Using the tensor elastic Green functions an exact integral equation is formulated for two anisotropic precipitates embedded in an infinite anisotropic matrix; the matrix is subjected to an applied strain field or the precipitates undergo a stress-free transformation strain. This equation is reduced to an infinite system of algebraic equations by expanding the strains in Taylor series about the two points within each precipitate, and an approximation of the strain distributions within the two spherical precipitates is obtained by truncating the higher order terms. Since the present method requires no symmetry conditio between the two shperical precipitates, it is possible to obtain the strain distribution within the precipitates when the elastic constants and/or the sizes of the precipitates are different each other. The strains are expanded about arbitrary points, giving more accurate distributions of the strains than those presented elsewhere. The present method can be directly estended to the case of more than two spherical precipitates.
In the present work, the elasto-viscoplastic behavior, interactions between grains, and the texture evolution in polycrystalline materials subjected to finite deformations are modeled using a multiscale analysis procedure within a finite element framework. Computational homogenization is used to relate the grain (meso) scale to the macroscale. Specifically, a polycrystal is modeled by a material representative volume element (RVE) consisting of an aggregate of grains, and a periodic distribution of such unit cells is considered to describe material behavior locally on the macroscale. The elastic behavior is defined by a hyperelastic potential, and the viscoplastic response is modeled by a simple power law complemented by a work hardening equation. The finite element framework is based on a Lagrangian formulation, where a kinematic split of the deformation gradient into volume preserving and volumetric parts together with a three-field form of the Hu-Washizu variational principle is adopted to create a stable finite element method. Examples involving simple deformations of an aluminum alloy are modeled to predict inhomogeneous fields on the grain scale, and the macroscopic effective stress-strain curve and texture evolution are compared to those obtained using both upper and lower bound models.
Flexible roll forming is an advanced sheet-metal-forming process that allows the production of parts with various cross-sections. During the flexible process, material is subjected to three-dimensional deformation such as transverse bending, inhomogeneous elongations, or contraction. Because of the effects of process variables on the quality of the roll-formed products, the approaches used to investigate the roll-forming process have been largely dependent on experience and trial- and-error methods. Web-warping is one of the major shape defects encountered in flexible roll forming. In this study, an SVR model was developed to predict the web-warping during the flexible roll forming process. In the development of the SVR model, three process parameters, namely the forming-roll speed condition, leveling-roll height, and bend angle were considered as the model inputs, and the web-warping height was used as the response variable for three blank shapes; rectangular, concave, and convex shape. MATLAB software was used to train the SVR model and optimize three hyperparameters (λ, ε, and γ). To evaluate the SVR model performance, the statistical analysis was carried out based on the three indicators: the root-mean-square error, mean absolute error, and relative root-mean-square error.
When the periodic cellular structure is loaded or swelling beyond the critical value, the structure may undergo a pattern transformation owing to the local elastic instabilities, thus leading to structural collapse and the structure changing to a new configuration. Based on this deformation-triggered pattern, we have proposed the novel composite gel materials. This designed material is a type of architectural material possessing special mechanical properties. In this study, the mechanical behavior of the composite gel periodic structure with various gel inclusions is studied further through numerical simulations. When pattern transformation occurs, it results in a different elastic relationship compared with the material at untransformed state. Based on the obtained nominal stress versus nominal strain behavior, the Poisson's ratio and corresponding deformed structure patterns, we investigate the performance of designed composite materials and the effects of the uniformly distributed gel inclusions on composite materials. A better understanding of the characteristics of these composite gel materials is a key to develop its potential applications on new soft machines.

The mechanical behavior of the polymeric material, HDPE depends on both time and temperature. The study of the tensile behavior at different strain rates is important in engineering design of the orthopedics device such as X-band plate. The mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of HDPE are strongly dependent on the applied strain rate. Generally, the deformation behavior of HDPE based on the stress-strain curve is complex because of the highly inhomogeneous nature of plastic deformation, particularly that of necking. Therefore, we attempted to determine the mechanical behavior of HDPE in this study. Normally, tensile testing under various strain rates of the HDPE has been used to determine the mechanical behavior. We performed tensile tests at various strain rates (1 to 500 %/min) to analyze the viscoelastic behavior on increasing the strain rate. A tensile stress-strain curve was plotted from the data, and the point of transition was marked to calculate the transition stress, strain, and modulus.
