Treatment of a large diseased area with electron often requires the use of two or more adjoining fields. In such cases, not only electron beam divergence and lateral scattering but also fields overlapping and separation may lead to significant dose inhomogeneities(${\pm}20\%$) at the field junction area. In this study, we made Acrylic Electron Wedges to improve dose homogeneities(${\pm}5\%$) in these junction areas and considered application it to clinical practices. All measurements were made using 6, 9, 12, 16, 20MeV Electron beams from a linear accelerator for a $10{\times}10cm$ field at 100cm SSD. Adding a 1 mm sheet of acryl gradually from 1 mm to 15 mm, We acquired central axis depth dose beam profile and isodose curves in water phantom. As a result, for all energies, the practical range was reduced by approximately the same distance as the thickness of the acryl insert, e.g. a 1 mm thick acryl insert reduce the practical range by approximately 1 mm. For every mm thickness of acryl inserted, the beam energy was reduced by approximately 0.2MeV. These effects were almost independent of beam energy and field size. The use of Acrylic Electron Wedges produced a small increase $(less\;than\;3\%)\;in\;the\;surface\;dose\;and\;a\;small\;Increase(less\;than\;1\%)$ in X-ray contamination. For acryl inserts, thickness of 3 mm or greater, the penumbra width increased nearly linear for all energies and isodose curves near the beam edge were nearly parallel with the incident beam direction, and penumbra width was $35\;mm{\sim}40\;mm$. We decide heel thickness and angle of the wedge at this point. These data provide the information necessary to design Acrylic Electron Wedge which can be use to improve dose uniformity at electron field junctions and it will be effectively applicated in clinical practices.

In order to study the characteristics of cloud, a real-scale experiment for cloud generation was carried out using an extinct vertical mine (430 m height) located in the northeastern Honshu, Japan. The dry particles generated from the three-step concentrations of NaCl solutions were used for cloud generation. The number size distributions of initial dry particles and cloud droplets were monitored by Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP) at bottom and upper sites of pit, respectively. The polymeric water absorbent film (PWAF) method was employed to measure liquid water content ($W_L$) as a function of droplet size. Moreover the chemical properties of individual droplet replicas were determined by micro-PIXE. The CCN number concentration shows the lognormal form in dependence of the particle size, while the number size distributions of droplets are bimodal showing the peaks around $9{\mu}m$ and $20{\mu}m$ for every case. In comparison to background mineral particles, right shifting of size distribution line for NaCl particles was occurred. When NaCl solutions with three-step different concentrations were neulized, $W_L$ shows the strong droplet size dependence. It varied from $10.0mg\;m^{-3}$ up to $13.6mg\;m^{-3}$ with average $11.6mg\;m^{-3}$. A good relationship between $W_L$ and cloud droplet number concentration was obtained. Both chemical inhomogeneities (mixed components with mineral and C1) and homogeneities (only mineral components or C1) in individual droplet replicas were obviously observed from micro-PIXE elemental images.
High temperature silicon carbide Schottky diode was fabricated with Au deposited on poly 3C-SiC thin film grown on p-type Si(100) using atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition. The charge transport mechanism of the diode was studied in the temperature range of 300 K to 550 K. The forward and reverse bias currents of the diode increase strongly with temperature and diode shows a non-ideal behavior due to the series resistance and the interface states associated with 3C-SiC. The charge transport mechanism is a temperature activated process, in which, the electrons passes over of the low barriers and in turn, diode has a large ideality factor. The charge transport mechanism of the diode was analyzed by a Gaussian distribution of the Schottky barrier heights due to the Schottky barrier inhomogeneities at the metal-semiconductor interface and the mean barrier height and zero-bias standard deviation values for the diode was found to be 1.82 eV and $s_0$=0.233 V, respectively. The interface state density of the diode was determined using conductance-frequency and it was of order of $9.18{\times}10^{10}eV^{-1}cm^{-2}$.
Equatorial noise, also known magnetosonic waves (MSWs), are one of the frequently observed plasma waves in Earth's inner magnetosphere. Observations have shown that wave amplitudes maximize at the magnetic equator with a narrow extent in their latitudinal distribution. It has been understood that waves are generated from an equatorial source region and confined within a few degrees magnetic latitude. The present study investigates whether the MSW instability and saturation amplitudes maximize at the equator, given an energetic proton ring-like distribution derived from an observed wave event, and using linear instability analysis and particle-in-cell simulations with the plasma conditions at different latitudes along the dipole magnetic field line. The results show that waves initially grow fastest (i.e., with the largest growth rate) at high latitude (20°-25°), but consistent with observations, their saturation amplitudes maximize within ±10° latitude. On the other hand, the slope of the saturation amplitudes versus latitude revealed in the present study is not as steep as what the previous statistical observation results suggest. This may be indicative of some other factors not considered in the present analyses at play, such as background magnetic field and plasma inhomogeneities and the propagation effect.
A comparative DNS study of the ignition characteristics of dual-fueled reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) and stratification charge compression ignition (SCCI) is investigated using a 116-species reduced primary reference fuel (PRF) mechanism. In the RCCI combustion, two PRF fuels (n-heptane and iso-octane) with opposite autoignition characteristics are separatedly supplied and in-cylinder blended such that spatial variations in fuel reactivity, fuel concentration and temperature are achieved. In the SCCI combustion, however, just a single fuel (PRF50) is used such that only fuel concentration and temperature inhomoginieties are obtained. Because three factors, rather than only two as in SCCI combustion, govern the overall RCCI combustion, combustion timing and combustion duration or heat release rate of RCCI combustion are flexibly and effectively controlled. It is found that the overall RCCI combustion occurs much earlier and its combustion duration is longer compared to SCC combustionI. Moreover, the negative temperature coefficient (NTC) has a positive effect on enhancing RCCI combustion by inducing a shorter combustion timing and a longer combustion duration as a result of the occurrence of a predominant low-speed deflagration-combustion mode.
In the automotive electronic industry, the development of vehicle's door wiring harness (W/H) system for new applications is driven continuously for the low-cost and the high strength performance for electronic components. The problem of the fatigue strength estimation for materials and components containing natural defects, inclusions, or inhomogeneities is of great importance both scientifically and industrially. This article gives some insight into the dimensioning process with special focus on the fatigue analysis of wiring harness (W/H) in vehicle's door structures. The results from endurance tests using slim test specimens were compared with the results from FEM for predicted fatigue life. The expectation for the life of components is affected by the microstructural features with complex stress state arising from the combined service loading and residual stresses.
The elastic properties and thickness of mullite environmental barrier coatings grown through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on silicon carbide substrates were measured using frequency domain photoacoustic microscopy. In this technique, extremely narrow bandwidth surface acoustic waves are generated with an amplitude modulated laser source. A photorefractive crystal based interferometer is used to detect the resulting surface displacement. The complex displacement field is mapped as a function of source-to-receiver distance in order to extract the wavelength of the surface acoustic wave at a given excitation frequency, and the phase velocity is determined. The coatings tested exhibited spatial variations in thickness and mechanical properties. The measured surface wave dispersion curves were used to extract an effective value for the elastic modulus and the coating thickness. Nanoindentation was used to validate the measurements of the effective elastic modulus. The average elastic modulus measured through the coating thickness using nanoindentation is compared to the effective modulus found using the photoacoustic system. Optical microscopy is used to validate the thickness measurements. The results indicate that the photoacoustic microscopy technique can be used to estimate the effective elastic properties in coatings exhibiting spatial inhomogeneities, potentially providing valuable feedback for the optimization of the CVD growth process.

The station relocations, the replacement of instruments, and the change of a procedure for calculating derived climatic quantities from observations are well-known nonclimatic factors that seriously contaminate the worthwhile results in climate study. Prior to embarking on the climatological analysis, therefore, the quality and homogeneity of the utilized data sets should be properly evaluated with metadata. According to the metadata of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), there have been plenty of changes in the procedure computing the daily mean values of temperature, humidity, etc, since 1904. For routine climatological work, it is customary to compute approximate daily mean values for individual days from values observed at fixed hours. In the KMA, fixed hours were totally 5 times changed: at four-hourly, four-hourly interval with additional 12 hour, eight-hourly, six-hourly, three-hourly intervals. In this paper, the homogeneity in the daily mean temperature dataset of the KMA was assessed with the consistency and efficiency of point estimators. We used the daily mean calculated from the 24 hourly readings as a potential true value. Approximate daily means computed from temperatures observed at different fixed hours have statistically different properties. So this inhomogeneity in KMA climate data should be kept in mind if you want to analysis secular aspects of Korea climate using this data set.
We report the detection of exoplanet candidates in orbits around HD 60292 and HD 112640 from a radial velocity (RV) survey. The stars exhibit RV variations with periods of 495 ±3 days and 613±6 days, respectively. These detections are part of the Search for Exoplanets around Northern Circumpolar Stars (SENS) survey using the fiber-fed Bohyunsan Observatory Echelle Spectrograph installed at the 1.8-m telescope of the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory in Korea. The aim of the survey is to search for planetary or substellar companions. We argue that the periodic RV variations are not related to surface inhomogeneities; rather, Keplerian motions of planetary companions are the most likely interpretation. Assuming stellar masses of 1.7 ± 0.2M⊙ (HD 60292) and 1.8 ± 0.2M⊙ (HD 112640), we obtain minimum planetary companion masses of 6.5 ± 1.0MJup and 5.0 ± 1.0MJup, and periods of 495.4 ± 3.0 days and 613.2 ± 5.8 days, respectively.
