  • Pseudomonas sp. GRC3 produced extracellular chitinase(s) and ${\beta}$-1,3-glucanase(s), possible biocontrol agents. Both of enzymes appeared to inhibit the growth of plant phathogens, especially Phytophthora capsici. Antifungal activities of Pseudomonas sp. GRC3 determined was more than 78% inhibition rate against P. capsici.

  • Biological activities of decursin and decursinol, natural coumarin derivatives, on the germination, growth and adventitious root formation of several plants were observed. In 10 ppm of decursin or decursinol, the growth of Avena coleoptile sections was inhibited, and the activity of IAA-oxidase was gradually enhanced by the increase of its concentrations. Inhibition effect on seed germination was observed from 100 ppm of each chemcials, and the activity of amylase in the germinating seeds was also gradually decreased. However, in the higher concentrations of decursin, the inhibited germination rate of wheat was slightly reduced. Decursin and decursinol also promoted the adventitious root formation in seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris.

  • By bioassay-guided separation, an already known saponin, Pulsatilla saponin D was isolated from the root of Pulsatilla koreana Nakai as a antitumor component when evaluated by in vivo antitumor activity as well as in vitro cytotoxic activity test. It showed potent inhibition rate of tumor growth (IR, 82%) at the dose of 6.4 mg/kg on the BDF1 mice bearing LLC cells.

  • Effect of lauric acid and whir derivatives on the growth of Bacillus subtilis var niger was studied. Lauric acid showed the strongest inhibition among the fatty acids tested, Lysis rate of lauric acid proved to be greatly sensitibility against logarithmic phase cells but was not so influenced by cell concentration. On the other hand, lauric acid was inhibited lysis activity when the pH shift from 7.0 to 5.5

  • The effects of silicon on galvannealing behavior of interstitial-free (IF) steels were studied. The growth rate of the Fe-Zn alloy layer was retarded as silicon in the steel added. Titanium in steel strongly favors Fe-Zn reaction, in particular outburst structures, whereas silicon inhibit them. Cross-sectional and planar views of galvannealed coatings were investigated to characterize alloy phase development. A possible mechanism to explain the retardation effect of silicon is discussed in terms of concentration on surface and inhibition layer.

  • A mycotoxin Patulin, isolated from apple juice medium cultured with Penicillium patulum NRRL5259, was purified through acid aluminum column using ethyl ether as eluent. The yield of purified patulin crystal was 3mg/ml culture medium after 8 days of shaking culture at 28C. The growth rate of Escherichia coli K12JM103 infected with bacteriophage M13 was decreased by patulin at the concentration range of 1Mug/ml to 10Mu/nl. ED50 of patulin for the bacterial growth was 4.5Mug/ml and 10Mug/ml of patulin caused maximum inhibitory effect (60% inhibition) on the growth.

  • Inhibiting action of semicarbazide, thiosemicarbazide, sym. diphenylcarbazide towards corrosion of zinc in hydrochloric acid has been investigated. The rate of corrosion depends on the nature of the inhibitor and its concentration. The values of inhibition efficiency from, weight loss, thermometric measurements are in good agreement with those obtained from polarization studies. From the polarization studies, the inhibitors used act as mixed absorption type inhibitors, increased adsorption resulting from an increase in the electron density at the reactive C=S and C=O groups and N-atoms. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption obtained using Bockris-Swinkels adsorption isotherm reveal a strong interaction of these carbazides on zinc surface.

  • Inosine 5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH) is a critical enzyme in the regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation. This enzyme catalyzes the $NAD^+$-dependent oxidation of IMP to XMP, the rate limiting step in de novo biosynthesis of guanine nucleotides. Therefore, the biochemical effect of IMPDH inhibition in sensitive cell types is decrease in intracellular guanine nucleotide levels, and the decrease in cellular GTP and deoxy GTP pool levels blocks DNA and RNA synthesis in rapidly proliferating tumor cells. • Reactive oxygen species(ROS) are produced at a high rate continuously as a by-product of aerobic metabolism. Several lines of evidence provided that ROS appears to cause to develop aging and various diseases. High level of hyaluronic acid with decreased molecular weight has been detected in patients with inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis. Hyaluronidase is an endohexosaminidase that initiates the degradation of hyaluronic acid with high molecular weight. Prunus persica Batsch var. davidiana Maximowicz has been known as a korean folk medicine for treatment of neuritis and rheumatism. (omitted)
