  • Image enhancement for Infrared imaging system is mainly based on the global histogram equalization. The global histogram equalization(GHE) is a method in which each pixel is equalized by using a whole histogram of an image. GHE is speedy and effective for real-time imaging system but its method fails to enhance the fine details. On the other hand, the basic local histogram equalization(LHE) method uses sliding a window and. the pixels under the window region are equalized over the whole output dynamic range. The LHE is adequate to enhance the fine details. But this method is computationally slow and noises are over-enhanced. So various local histogram equalization methods have been already presented to overcome these problems of LHE. In this paper, a new regional dynamic range histogram equalization (RDRHE) is presented. RDRHE improves the equalization quality while reducing the computational burden.

  • This paper proposes the enhanced auto-focus algorithm detecting several objects and selecting the target object. Proposed algorithm first detects some objects distributed in the image using focus measure operator and multi-window and then selects the target object through fuzzy reasoning with three fuzzy membership functions. Implementation can be simple because it only needs image sensor instead of infrared or ultrasonic equipment. Experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm can improve the quality of image by focusing to the target object.

  • In this study, the sensitivity of the mid-infrared radiance to atmospheric and surface factors was analyzed using the radiative transfer model, MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN6)'s simulation data. The possibility of retrieving the land surface temperature (LST) using only the mid-infrared bands at night was evaluated. Based on the sensitivity results, the LST retrieval algorithm that reflects various factors for night was developed, and the level of the LST retrieval algorithm was evaluated using reference LST and observed LST. Sensitivity experiments were conducted on the atmospheric profiles, carbon dioxide, ozone, diurnal variation of LST, land surface emissivity (LSE), and satellite viewing zenith angle (VZA), which mainly affect satellite remote sensing. To evaluate the possibility of using split-window method, the mid-infrared wavelength was divided into two bands based on the transmissivity. Regardless of the band, the top of atmosphere (TOA) temperature is most affected by atmospheric profile, and is affected in order of LSE, diurnal variation of LST, and satellite VZA. In all experiments, band 1, which corresponds to the atmospheric window, has lower sensitivity, whereas band 2, which includes ozone and water vapor absorption, has higher sensitivity. The evaluation results for the LST retrieval algorithm using prescribed LST showed that the correlation coefficient (CC), the bias and the root mean squared error (RMSE) is 0.999, 0.023K and 0.437K, respectively. Also, the validation with 26 in-situ observation data in 2021 showed that the CC, bias and RMSE is 0.993, 1.875K and 2.079K, respectively. The results of this study suggest that the LST can be retrieved using different characteristics of the two bands of mid-infrared to the atmospheric and surface conditions at night. Therefore, it is necessary to retrieve the LST using satellite data equipped with sensors in the mid-infrared bands.

  • Glass-ceramics transparent above $10\;{\mu}m$ in the infrared, have been synthesized. They are based on germanium and antimony sulphides or selenides associated to alkali halides. They are prepared by heating glass samples at temperatures above the glass transition, as a function of time. Ceramisation can be controlled, so that sub-100 nm crystals are generated in the glass matrix. Then, low light scattering is achieved and the transparency window of the original glass is maintained. When gallium sulphide is added, glass ceramics can be doped with rare-earth ions. Emissions from the $^4F_{3/2}$ and $^4I_{13/2}$ of $Nd^{3+}$ and $Er^{3+}$ ions, respectively, are more intense in glass-ceramics, as compared to their vitreous counterpart. Examination of band profiles and decaytimes show that rare-earth ions are embedded in both crystalline and glassy environments.

  • The transfer of predictive models using various chemometric techniques has been reported for FTNIR and scanning-grating based NIR instruments with respect relatively dry samples (<10% water). Some of the currently used transfer techniques include slope and bias correction (SBC), direct standardization (DS), piecewise direct standardization (PDS), orthogonal signal correction (OSC), finite impulse transform (FIR) and wavelet transform (WT) and application of neural networks. In a previous study (Greensill et at., 2001) on calibration transfer for wet samples (intact melons) across silicon diode array instrumentation, we reported on the performance of various techniques (SBC, DS, PDS, double window PDS (DWPDS), OSC, FIR, WT, a simple photometric response correction and wavelength interpolative method and a model updating method) in terms of RMSEP and Fearns criterion for comparison of RMSEP. In the current study, we compare these melon transfer results to a similar study employing pairs of spectrometers for non-invasive prediction of soluble solid content of peaches.

  • Polarized mid-infrared emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can provide a crucial test of basic physics of alignment of nanoparticles and opens a potential new window into studying magnetic fields. In this talk, I will present a new model of polarized PAH emission that takes into account the effect of PAH alignment with the magnetic field due to resonance paramagnetic relaxation. I will then present our predictions for the polarization level of the strong PAH emission features from the interstellar medium. I will present the first detection of polarization of PAH emission at 11.3micron which is consistent with our theoretical prediction. Finally, I will discuss important implications of this work for tracing magnetic fields via mid-IR PAH features and for constraining the polarization of anomalous microwave emission that is useful for the quest of CMB B-modes.

  • In this study. the amounts of the total precipitable water (TPW) in both global and regional scale are estimated from the MODIS instrument, which is on-board the EOS satellites, Terra and Aqua. The estimation is made from the five near-infrared spectral bands, using a technique employing ratios of water- vapor absorbing channels centered at 0.905, 0.936, 0.940 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with atmospheric window channels at 0.865 and 1.240 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Through analyses of monthly and eight-days mean TPW, one can monitor characteristics of seasonal variations as well as amount and distribution (i.e., water resources) of TPW at both global and local regions. Long-term monitoring of TPW is essential to understand the regional variations of water resources in East Asia.

  • In this paper, detection based - adaptive windowed nonlinear filter(DB-AWNF) is proposed for removing salt-pepper noise in infrared image. This filter is composed of impulse detector and window-size-variable median filters. Impulse detector checks whether current pixel is impulse or not using range function and nonlinear location estimator. If impulse is detected, current pixel is filtered according to four kinds of local masks by use of median filter. If not, current pixel is delivered to output like identity filter. In Qualitative view, the proposed could have removed heavy corrupted noise up to 30% and reserved the details of image. In quantitative view, PSNR was measured. The proposed could have about 12-31[dB] more improved performance than those of median $(3{\times}3)$ filter and 13-29[dB] more improved performance than those of median $(5{\times}5)$ filter.

  • The mechanism by which pyrrhotite is depressed by diethylenetriamine (DETA) during pentlandite flotation has been studied. Amyl xanthate is observed to adsorb on pyrrhotite to form both dixanthogen and iron xanthate. In the presence of DETA, the amount of xanthate adsorbed on pyrrhotite is substantially reduced as evidenced by infrared and UV/Vis spectroscopy. However, DETA does not adsorb on pyrrhotite as evidenced by infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. DETA shifts the potential of the onset of xanthate adsorption on pyrrhotite by approximately 200 mV toward anodic direction, which is thought to be due to the increased solubility of surface oxidized species on pyrrhotite in the presence of DETA. A window of selectivity for the separation of pentlandite and pyrrhotite is provided by the results obtained in this study.
