Most of the public and private users who use national satellite information such as the KOMPSAT series mainly use Electro-Optical and Infrared (EO/IR) satellite images, and the utilization of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images is relatively insufficient. As KOMPSAT-5 currently in operation, KOMPSAT-6 and micro SAR satellite constellation systems are scheduled to be launched in the future, the demand for utilization of SAR satellite information is increasing in various fields. Accordingly, it is necessary to possess core technology for SAR utilization that can support the utilization of SAR satellite information for users. Due to the all-weather properties of SAR system, change detection technology is a key application technology. However, until now, the development of technology that automatic change detection and cueing using SAR images is insufficient. Through this study, the requirements of automatic change detection and cueing function using multi-temporal KOMPSAT-5 SAR satellite images were derived and a prototype program was developed. This prototype program aims to secure independent SAR utilization technology and promote the utilization of domestic SAR satellite information by practitioners in public sector organizations in Korea.
The frequency and damage of forest fires have tended to increase over the past 20 years. In order to effectively respond to forest fires, information on forest fire damage should be well managed. However, information on the extent of forest fire damage is not well managed. This study attempted to present a method that extracting information on the area of forest fire in real time and quasi-real-time using visible infrared imaging radiometer suite (VIIRS) images. VIIRS data observing the Korean Peninsula were obtained and visualized at the time of the East Coast forest fire in March 2022. VIIRS images were classified without supervision using iterative self-organizing data analysis (ISODATA) algorithm. The results were reclassified using the relationship between the burned area and the location of the flame to extract the extent of forest fire. The final results were compared with verification and comparison data. As a result of the comparison, in the case of large forest fires, it was found that classifying and extracting VIIRS images was more accurate than estimating them through forest fire occurrence data. This method can be used to create spatial data for forest fire management. Furthermore, if this research method is automated, it is expected that daily forest fire damage monitoring based on VIIRS will be possible.

Temperature of the Earth's surface is a crucial physical variable in understanding weather and atmospheric dynamics and in coping with extreme heat events that have a great impact on living organismsincluding humans. Thermalsensors on satellites have been a useful meansfor acquiring surface temperature information for wide areas on the globe, and thus characterization of its estimation uncertainty is of central importance for the utilization of the data. Among various factors that affect the estimation, the uncertainty caused by the algorithm itself has not been tested for the atmospheric environment of Korean vicinity. Thisstudy derivesthe uncertainty of the single-channel algorithm under the local atmospheric and oceanic conditions by using reanalysis data and buoy temperature data collected around Korea. Atmospheric profiles were retrieved from two types of reanalysis data, the fifth generation of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts reanalysis of the global climate and weather (ERA5) and Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications-2 (MERRA-2) to investigate the effect of reanalysis data. MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN) was used as a radiative transfer code for simulating top of atmosphere radiance and the atmospheric correction for the temperature estimation. Water temperatures used for MODTRAN simulations and uncertainty estimation for the single-channel algorithm were obtained from marine weather buoyslocated in seas around the Korean Peninsula. Experiment results showed that the uncertainty of the algorithm varies by the water vapor contents in the atmosphere and is around 0.35K in the driest atmosphere and 0.46K in overall, regardless of the reanalysis data type. The uncertainty increased roughly in a linear manner as total precipitable water increased.

The representative crop in the Republic of Korea, rice, is cultivated over extensive areas every year, which resulting in reduced resistance to pests and diseases. One of the major rice diseases, rice blast disease, can lead to a significant decrease in yields when it occurs on a large scale, necessitating early detection and effective control of rice blast disease. Drone-based crop monitoring techniques are valuable for detecting abnormal growth, but frequent image capture for potential rice blast disease occurrences can consume significant labor and resources. The purpose of this study is to early detect rice blast disease using remote sensing data, such as drone and satellite images, along with weather data. Satellite images was helpful in identifying rice cultivation fields. Effective detection of paddy fields was achieved by utilizing vegetation and water indices. Subsequently, air temperature, relative humidity, and number of rainy days were used to calculate the risk of rice blast disease occurrence. An increase in the risk of disease occurrence implies a higher likelihood of disease development, and drone measurements perform at this time. Spectral reflectance changes in the red and near-infrared wavelength regions were observed at the locations where rice blast disease occurred. Clusters with low vegetation index values were observed at locations where rice blast disease occurred, and the time series data for drone images allowed for tracking the spread of the disease from these points. Finally, drone images captured before harvesting was used to generate spatial information on the incidence of rice blast disease in each field.
The Operational Linescan System (OLS)sensor is a sensor aboard satellites launched through the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) that detects light in the visible and infrared bands emitted at night. Studies by several researchers have shown a high correlation between nighttime light data from OLS sensors and gross domestic product values. In this study, we investigated the correlation of nighttime light data with the total amount of individual land prices, which is one of the various indicators related to economic development. The study found that most cities and provinces showed a high correlation with a correlation coefficient of more than 0.7, and the correlation coefficient of 0.7837 between the total amount of individual land price and nighttime light data for the entire South Korea was also high. However, unlike other cities and provinces, Seoul has a low correlation coefficient of 0.5648 between nighttime light and the total amount of individual land price, which is analyzed as a reason that the digital number value of the OLS sensor is close to the maximum value and cannot show further brightness changes. This study is expected to help identify announced land prices in areas where announced land prices are not systematically organized and to analyze land use changes in such areas.

Soybean has widely grown for its edible bean which has numerous uses. Microwave remote sensing has a great potential over the conventional remote sensing with the visible and infrared spectra due to its all-weather day-and-night imaging capabilities. In this investigation, a ground-based polarimetric scatterometer operating at multiple frequencies was used to continuously monitor the crop conditions of a soybean field. Polarimetric backscatter data at L, C, and X-bands were acquired every 10 minutes on the microwave observations at various soybean stages. The polarimetric scatterometer consists of a vector network analyzer, a microwave switch, radio frequency cables, power unit and a personal computer. The polarimetric scatterometer components were installed inside an air-conditioned shelter to maintain constant temperature and humidity during the data acquisition period. The backscattering coefficients were calculated from the measured data at incidence angle $40^{\circ}$ and full polarization (HH, VV, HV, VH) by applying the radar equation. The soybean growth data such as leaf area index (LAI), plant height, fresh and dry weight, vegetation water content and pod weight were measured periodically throughout the growth season. We measured the temporal variations of backscattering coefficients of the soybean crop at L, C, and X-bands during a soybean growth period. In the three bands, VV-polarized backscattering coefficients were higher than HH-polarized backscattering coefficients until mid-June, and thereafter HH-polarized backscattering coefficients were higher than VV-, HV-polarized back scattering coefficients. However, the cross-over stage (HH > VV) was different for each frequency: DOY 200 for L-band and DOY 210 for both C and X-bands. The temporal trend of the backscattering coefficients for all bands agreed with the soybean growth data such as LAI, dry weight and plant height; i.e., increased until about DOY 271 and decreased afterward. We plotted the relationship between the backscattering coefficients with three bands and soybean growth parameters. The growth parameters were highly correlated with HH-polarization at L-band (over r=0.92).

Microwave remote sensing can help monitor the land surface water cycle and crop growth. This type of remote sensing has great potential over conventional remote sensing using the visible and infrared regions due to its all-weather day-and-night imaging capabilities. In this paper, a ground-based multi-frequency (L-, C-, and X-band) polarimetric scatterometer system capable of making observations every 10 min was developed. This system was used to monitor the wheat over an entire growth cycle. The polarimetric scatterometer components were installed inside an air-conditioned shelter to maintain constant temperature and humidity during the data acquisition period. Backscattering coefficients for the crop growing season were compared with biophysical measurements. Backscattering coefficients for all frequencies and polarizations increased until dat of year 137 and then decreased along with fresh weight, dry weight, plant height, and vegetation water content (VWC). The range of backscatter for X-band was lower than for L- and C-band. We examined the relationship between the backscattering coefficients of each band (frequency/polarization) and the various wheat growth parameters. The correlation between the different vegetation parameters and backscatter decreased with increasing frequency. L-band HH-polarization (L-HH) is best suited for the monitoring of fresh weight (r=0.98), dry weight (r=0.96), VWC (r=0.98), and plant height (r=0.96). The correlation coefficients were highest for L-band observations and lowest for X-band. Also, HH-polarization had the highest correlations among the polarization channels (HH, VV and HV). Based on the correlation analysis between backscattering coefficients in each band and wheat growth parameters, we developed prediction equations using the L-HH based on the observed relationships between L-HH and fresh weight, dry weight, VWC and plant height. The results of these analyses will be useful in determining the optimum microwave frequency and polarizations necessary for estimating vegetation parameters in the wheat.
This study was conducted to evaluate the usefulness of ground-based remote sensing for the estimation of rice yield and application rate of N-fertilizer during growing season. Dongjin-1, Korean cultivar of rice was planted on May 30, 2006 and harvested on October 9, 2006. Chlorophyll content and LAI (leaf area index) were measured using Minolta SPAD-502 and AccuPAR model LP-80, respectively. Reflectance indices were determined with passive sensors using sunlight and four types of active sensors using modulated light, respectively. Reflectance indices and growth rate were measured three times from 29 days to 87 days after rice plating and at harvesting day. The result showed that values of growing characteristics and reflectance indices were highly correlated. Growing characteristics to show significant correlation with reflectance indices were in order of followings: fresh weight > N uptake > dry weight > height > No. of tiller > N content. Chlorophyll contents measured by chlorophyll meter (SPAD 502) showed high correlation with nitrogen concentration (r=$0.743^{**}$), although the correlation coefficients between remote sensing data and nitrogen concentration were higher. LAI was highly correlated with dry weight (r=$0.931^{**}$), but relationship between LAI and nitrogen concentration (r=$0.505^*$) was relatively low. The data of CC-passive sensor were negatively correlated with those of the near-infrared. NDVI correlation coefficients found more useful to identify the growth characteristics rather than data from single wavelength. Both passive sensor and active sensor were highly significantly correlated with growth characteristics. Consequently, quantifying the growth characteristics using reflectance indices of ground-based remote sensing could be a useful tool to determine the application rate of N fertilizer non-destructively and in real-time.

Remote sensing techniques using drone-based multispectral image were studied for fast and two-dimensional monitoring of algal blooms in the river. Drone is anticipated to be useful for algal bloom monitoring because of easy access to the field, high spatial resolution, and lowering atmospheric light scattering. In addition, application of multispectral sensors could make image processing and analysis procedures simple, fast, and standardized. Spectral indices derived from the active spectrum of photosynthetic pigments in terrestrial plants and phytoplankton were tested for estimating chlorophyll-a concentrations (Chl-a conc.) from drone-based multispectral image. Spectral indices containing the red-edge band showed high relationships with Chl-a conc. and especially, 3-band model (3BM) and normalized difference chlorophyll index (NDCI) were performed well (R2=0.86, RMSE=7.5). NDCI uses just two spectral bands, red and red-edge, and provides normalized values, so that data processing becomes simple and rapid. The 3BM which was tuned for accurate prediction of Chl-a conc. in productive water bodies adopts originally two spectral bands in the red-edge range, 720 and 760 nm, but here, the near-infrared band replaced the longer red-edge band because the multispectral sensor in this study had only one shorter red-edge band. This index is expected to predict more accurately Chl-a conc. using the sensor specialized with the red-edge range.
Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is the most widely used remote sensing data in the agricultural field and is currently provided by most optical satellites. In particular, as high-resolution optical satellite images become available, the selection of optimal optical satellite images according to agricultural applications has become a very important issue. In this study, we aim to define the most optimal optical satellite image when monitoring NDVI in rice fields in Korea and derive the resolution-related requirements necessary for this. For this purpose, we compared and analyzed the spatial distribution and time series patterns of the Dangjin rice paddy in Korea from 2019 to 2022 using NDVI images from MOD13, Landsat-8, Sentinel-2A/B, and PlanetScope satellites, which are widely used around the world. Each data is provided with a spatial resolution of 3 m to 250 m and various periods, and the area of the spectral band used to calculate NDVI also has slight differences. As a result of the analysis, Landsat-8 showed the lowest NDVI value and had very low spatial variation. In comparison, the MOD13 NDVI image showed similar spatial distribution and time series patterns as the PlanetScope data but was affected by the area surrounding the rice field due to low spatial resolution. Sentinel-2A/B showed relatively low NDVI values due to the wide near-infrared band area, and this feature was especially noticeable in the early stages of growth. PlanetScope's NDVI provides detailed spatial variation and stable time series patterns, but considering its high purchase price, it is considered to be more useful in small field areas than in spatially uniform rice paddy. Accordingly, for rice field areas, 250 m MOD13 NDVI or 10 m Sentinel-2A/B are considered to be the most efficient, but high-resolution satellite images can be used to estimate detailed physical quantities of individual crops.
