  • The Yeongsan river estuary has a serious water quality problem due to the water stagnation and it is imperative to predict the changes of water quality for mitigating water pollution. EFDC(Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) model was mainly utilized to predict the changes of water quality for the estuary. The EFDC modeling normally accompanies the large volume of modeling output. For checking the spatial distribution of the modeling results, post-processing for converting of the output is prerequisite and mainly post-processing program is EFDC_Explorer. However, EFDC_Explorer only shows the spatial distribution of the time series and this doesn't support overlay function with other thematic maps. This means the impossible to the connection analysis with a various GIS data and high dimensional analysis. Therefore, this study aims to develop a post-processing system of a EFDC output to use them as GIS layers. For achieving this purpose, a editing module for main input files, and a module for converting binary format into an ASCII format, and a module for converting it into a layer format to use in a GIS based environment, and a module for visualizing the reconfigured model result efficiently were developed. Using the developed system, result file is possible to automatically convert the GIS based layer and it is possible to utilize for water quality management.

  • Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) was launched in 2010 with three payloads that include Ka-band communication payload developed by Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) and Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). This study introduces a real-time remote vessel monitoring system built in the Socheongcho Ocean Research Station using the Ka-band communication satellite. The system is composed of three steps; real-time data collection, transmission, and processing/visualization. We describe hardware (H/W) and software systems (S/W) installed to perform each step and the whole procedure that made the raw data become vessel information for a real-time ocean surveillance. In addition, we address functional requirements of H/W and S/W and the important considerations for successful operation of the system. The system is now successfully providing, in near real-time, ship information over a VHF range using AIS data collected in the station. The system is expected to support a rapid and effective surveillance over a huge oceanic area. We hope that the concept of the system can be fully used for real-time maritime surveillance using communication satellite in future.

  • This paper is on a participatory spatial design methodology using Virtual Reality, which can be applied to the overall spatial design process. Participation in the current spatial design has several limitations: one-sided communication process, difficulty of understanding the given information and partial participation in the design process. Virtual Reality can be an ideal visualization tool for Geodesign and PPGIS(Public Participation GIS), which is presented as a highest step at the participation ladder. A participatory methodology is proposed to take advantage of Virtual Reality. In order to support participation through Virtual Reality in spatial design process, theories about the participation are compared to derive the new roles of Virtual Reality and the roles are formulated in the participatory spatial design methodology. By applying the methodology to the design process and implementing each stage through Virtual Reality, the design performance of each step can be verified in the methodology. As a result, design ideas can be effectively understood through Virtual Reality experiences. It is also confirmed that the interactions in Virtual Reality and participation are possible in the entire design process.

  • The mission capability of tank depends on its survivability. The survivability is ability for protection and tolerance by damage from threats. To improve the survivability of tank, we need an effectiveness analysis for loss of components, and accomplish performance enhancement using the result of analysis. In this paper, we develop a survivability analysis system for tank based on the importance. The importance numerically represents weight of each component which consisting of whole tank, also the importance is basic method of quantitative survivability analysis. To do this, we assign weight values to each component of tank, compose a weight tree, apply the importance calculation equation, and analyze the survivability of tank. Also we develop the system that consists of component structuralization and weight value setting program and survivability analysis and visualization program, and evaluate the system using implemented 3D CAD models of components of tank. The developed system apply to arrangement components.

  • Digital virtual manufacturing is a technology that aims for the rapid development of products and the verification of production-process in ways that are more efficient by integrating digital models within the entire manufacturing process. These digital models utilize various information technologies, such as 3D CAD and simulations. Mixed reality, which represents graphical objects for only needed parts against real scene, can bring a more enriched sense of reality to an existing virtual manufacturing system that is in a pure virtual environment, and it can reduce the time and money needed for modeling the environment. This paper suggests a method for planning virtual factory layouts based on mixed reality using legacy datathat are already constructed in the real field. To do this, we developed the method to acquire simulation data from legacy data and process this acquired data for visualization based on mixed reality. And then we construct display system based on mixed reality, which can simulate virtual factory layout with processed data. Developed system can reduce errors related with factory layout by verifying the location and application of equipments in advance before arrangement of real ones at the practical job site.

  • A handful of previous studies have attempted to integrate socioeconomic data and remotely sensed data for urban quality of life assessment with their spatial dimension in a zonal unit. However, such a zone-based approach not only has the unrealistic assumption that all attributes of a zone are uniformly spatially distributed throughout the zone, but also has resulted in serious methodological difficulties such as the modifiable areal unit problem and the incompatibility problem with environmental data. An alternative to the zone-based approach can be a pixel-based approach which gets its spatial dimension through a pixel. This paper proposes a pixel-based approach to linking remotely sensed data with socioeconomic data in GIS for urban quality of life assessment. The pixel-based approach uses dasymetric mapping and spatial interpolation to spatially disaggregate socioeconomic data and integrates remotely sensed data with spatially disaggregated socioeconomic data for the quality of life assessment. This approach was implemented and compared with a zone-based approach using a case study of Fulton County, Georgia. Results indicate that the pixel-based approach allows for the calculation of a microscale indicator in the urban quality of life assessment and facilitates efficient data integration and visualization in the assessment although it costs an intermediate step with more processing time such as the disaggregation of zonal data. The results also demonstrate that the pixel-based approach opens up the potential for the development of new database and increased analytical capabilities in urban analysis.

  • Robot programming allows students to plan an algorithm in order to solve a task, implement the algorithm, easily confirm the results of the implementation with a robot, and correct errors. Thus, robot programming is a problem solving process based on reflective thinking, and is closely related to students' metacognition. On this point, this research is conducted to develop a robot programming instructional model for tile enhancement of students' metacognition. The instructional processes of robot programming are divided into 5 stages (i.e., 'exploration of learning tasks', 'a teacher's modeling', 'preparation of a plan for task performance along with the visualization of the plan', 'task performance', and 'self-evaluation and self-reinforcement'), and core strategies of metacognition (i.e., planning, monitering, regulating, and evaluating) are suggested for students' activities in each stage. Also, in order to support students' programming activities and the use of metacognition, instructional strategies based on cognitive apprenticeship (i.e. modeling, coaching and scaffolding) are suggested in relation to the instructional model. In addition, in order to support students' metacognitive activities. the model is designed to use self-questioning, and questions that students can use at each stage of the model are presented.

  • This paper consists of two parts: In the first part, we describe our work to build hierarchical knowledge base of digital library patron's research interests and learning topics in various scholarly areas through analyzing well classified Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) of NDLTD Union catalog. Journal articles from ACM Transactions and conference web sites of computing areas also are added in the analysis to specialize computing fields. This hierarchical knowledge base would be a useful tool for many social computing and information service applications, such as personalization, recommender system, text mining, technology opportunity mining, information visualization, and so on. In the second part, we compare four grouping algorithms to select best one for our data mining researches by testing each one with the hierarchical knowledge base we described in the first part. From these two studies, we intent to show traditional verification methods for social community miming researches, based on interviewing and answering questionnaires, which are expensive, slow, and privacy threatening, can be replaced with systematic, consistent, fast, and privacy protecting methods by using our suggested hierarchical knowledge base.

  • In this paper, we propose hidden object detection system using parametric array based on acoustic signal that is harmless to human body. A transmit signal of the proposed detection system uses a high directive chirp signal generated from parametric array phenomenon, which uses technique to improve a signal to noise (SNR) of a received signal and a distance resolution trough the dechirp processing. The transmit sensor array is constructed as $8{\times}2$ and has a horizontal beam width of $7^{\circ}$ and vertical beam width of $26^{\circ}$. To verify the detection and visualization of the proposed system, a 2-axis driving control system based on linear stage was constructed, and A-scan, B-scan, and C-scan experiments was addressed for hidden object. From experimental results, we detected and visualized the hidden bronze plate and pipe by cloth and the visualized shapes was confirmed. Especially, the obtained errors was $0.015m^2$ for bronze plate, and $0.046m^2$ for pipe.
