  • Traditional clustering methods, like k-means or fuzzy clustering, are prototype-based methods which are applicable only to convex clusters. On the other hand, spectral clustering tries to find clusters only using local similarity information. Its ability to handle concave clusters has gained the popularity recent years together with support vector machine (SVM) which is a kernel-based classification method. However, as is in SVM, the kernel width plays an important role and has a great impact on the result. Several methods are proposed to decide it automatically, it is still determined based on heuristics. In this paper, we proposed an adaptive method deciding the kernel width based on distance histogram. The proposed method is motivated by the fact that the affinity matrix should be formed into a block diagonal matrix to generate the best result. We use the tradition Euclidean distance together with the random walk distance, which make it possible to form a more apparent block diagonal affinity matrix. Experimental results show that the proposed method generates more clear block structured affinity matrix than the existing one does.

  • This paper presents a speech enhancement method using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). In the training phase, each basis matrix of source signal is obtained from a proper database, and these basis matrices are utilized for the source separation. In this case, the performance of speech enhancement relies heavily on the basis matrix. The proposed method for which speech basis matrix is made a high reconstruction error for noise signal shows a better performance than the standard NMF which basis matrix is trained independently. For comparison, we propose another method, and evaluate one of previous method. In the experiment result, the performance is evaluated by perceptual evaluation speech quality and signal to distortion ratio, and the proposed method outperformed the other methods.

  • While the matrix converter has many advantages that include bi-directional power flow, a size reduction, a long lifetime, and sinusoidal input currents, it is vulnerable to the input voltage disturbances, because it directly exchanges the input voltage to the output voltage. So, in this paper, a critical evaluation of the effect of various abnormal voltage conditions like unbalanced power supply, balanced non-sinusoidal power supply, input voltage sags and short time blackout of power supply on matrix converter fed induction motor drives is presented. The operation under various abnormal conditions has been analyzed. For this, a 230V, 250VA three phase to three phase matrix converter (MC) fed induction motor drive prototype is implemented using DSP based controller and tests have been carried out to evaluate and improve the stability of system under typical abnormal conditions. Digital storage oscilloscope & power quality analyzer are used for experimental observations.

  • Analysis of carrying capacity and site suitability by the systematic application of environmental information an provide a basis for implementing environmentally sensitive and sustainable resource development policies. Based on the availability of public services and environmental and site-specific constraints, a Rural Residential Density Matrix was applied in Santa Cruz County, California, USA to assess the development potential of rural land parcels since 1980. In one case, the Matrix was applied to calculate the allowable development density on a site in Lompico planned for use as a Buddhist retreat center. These calculations revealed higher environmental sensitivity and lower carrying capacity than projected in the proposed plan. Under the constraints of the county's minimum acreage policies and insufficient developable land, the developer cancelled the proposed plan. This example suggests that application of the Matrix at the concept development stage would increase the effectiveness of the prior environmental review and environmental impact assessment (EIA) system in Korea.

  • Application of matrix converter to vector control of induction motor using simplified Venturini algorithm which is capable of achieving the maximum output voltage is developed. This algorithm simplifies the control algorithm and therefor reduces the digital implementation time. Matrix converter is used as voltage-referenced voltage fed vector controlled induction motor drive. This paper describes the performance of vector controlled induction motor with four quadrant capability employing a matrix converter power circuit. The advantage of this system over the conventional rectifier-inverter arrangement are capability for regeneration into the utility, sinusoidal supply currents and minimum passive components. The steady-state and transient performance of the induction motor drive under the vector control technique is demonstrate with simulation and experiment results.

  • An efficient method is proposed here to identify multiple damage cases in structural systems using the concepts of flexibility matrix and strain energy of a structure. The flexibility matrix of the structure is accurately estimated from the first few mode shapes and natural frequencies. Then, the change of strain energy of a structural element, due to damage, evaluated by the columnar coefficients of the flexibility matrix is used to construct a damage indicator. This new indicator is named here as flexibility strain energy based index (FSEBI). In order to assess the performance of the proposed method for structural damage detection, two benchmark structures having a number of damage scenarios are considered. Numerical results demonstrate that the method can accurately locate the structural damage induced. It is also revealed that the magnitudes of the FSEBI depend on the damage severity.

  • In this paper, we propose a matrix hypercube graph as a new topology for parallel computer and analyze its characteristics of the network parameters, such as degree, routing and diameter. N-dimensional matrix hypercube graph MH(2,n) contains 22n vertices and has relatively lower degree and smaller diameter than well-known hypercube graph. The matrix hypercube graph MH(2,n) and the hypercube graph Q2n have the same number of vertices. In terms of the network cost, defined as the product of the degree and diameter, the former has n2 while the latter has 4n2. In other words, it means that matrix hypercube graph MH(2,n) is better than hypercube graph Q2n with respect to the network cost.

  • Wheat stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis, has reduced winter wheat yield globally for ages. In this work, multi-spectral Mueller matrix imaging with 37 measurements using the method of double rotatable quarter-wave plates was used to investigate wheat stripe rust. Individual Mueller matrix measurements were performed on incident monochromatic light with nine bands in the range of 430 to 690 nm. As a result, it was found that the infected area absorbed linearly polarized light and was sensitive to circularly polarized light in the spectral domain. Both linear depolarization and linear diattenuation images distinguished between wheat stripe rust and healthy tissue. The responsiveness of stripe rust to polarized light reveals the potential of using polarization imaging to detect plant diseases. This further suggests that the multi-spectral Mueller matrix imaging system provides us with an alternative approach to agricultural disease detection.

  • Person re-identification is an important and challenging task in computer vision with numerous real world applications. Despite significant progress has been made in the past few years, person re-identification remains an unsolved problem. This paper presents a novel appearance-based approach to person re-identification. The approach exploits region covariance matrix and color histograms to capture the statistical properties and chromatic information of each object. Robustness against low resolution, viewpoint changes and pose variations is achieved by a novel signature, that is, the combination of Log Covariance Matrix feature and HSV histogram (LCMH). In order to further improve re-identification performance, third-party image sets are utilized as a common reference to sufficiently represent any image set with the same type. Distinctive and reliable features for a given image set are extracted through decision boundary between the specific set and a third-party image set supervised by max-margin criteria. This method enables the usage of an existing dataset to represent new image data without time-consuming data collection and annotation. Comparisons with state-of-the-art methods carried out on benchmark datasets demonstrate promising performance of our method.
