  • The results of a numerical study on the performance of a propeller operating near a free surface are presented in this paper. The simulations are verified through comparison with experimental data, which was performed in a circulating water channel. The propeller performance as a function of the submerged depth was investigated. The effect of the propeller advance ratio on the wave patterns, flow structures around propeller, and thrust and torque of the propeller was also studied. Air ventilation was not observed for low advance coefficients. However, the simulations showed that wave pattern was strongly related to the tip vortex strength and inflow velocity. When air ventilation does not occur, the deduction of propeller thrust and torque increase for high advance coefficients.

  • The simulation techniques of hydrologic data series have been developed for the purposes of the design of water resources system, the optimization of reservoir operation, and the design of flood control of reservoir, etx. While the stochastic models are usually used in most analysis of water resources fields for the generation of data sequences, the indexed sequential modeling (ISM) method based on generation of a series of overlapping short-term flow sequences directly from the historical record has been used for the data generation in western USA since the early of 1980's. It was reported that the reliable results by ISM were obtained in practical applications. In this study, we generate annual inflow series at a location of Hong Cheon Dam site by using ISM method and first order autoregressive model (AR(1)), and estimate the drought characteristics for the comparison aim between ISM and AR(1).

  • This study is based on a series of numerical modeling experiments to understand the tidal circulation in the Kangjin Bay (KB). The tidal circulation in the KB is mostly controlled by the inflow from two channels, Noryang and Daebang which introduce the open ocean water into the northern part of the KB with relatively strong tidal current, while in the southern part of the KB, shallowest region of the entire study area, weak tidal current prevails. The model prediction of the sea level agrees with observed records at skill scores exceeding 90 % in terms of the four major tidal constituents (M2, S2, K1, O1). However, the skill scores for the tidal current show relatively lower values of 87, 99, 59, 23 for the semi-major axes of the constituents, respectively. The tidal ellipse parameters in the KB are such that the semi-major axes of the ellipse for M2 range from 1.7 to 38.5 cm/s and those for S2 range from 0.5 to 14.4 cm/s. The orientations of the major-axes show parallel with the local isobath. The eccentricity values at various grid points of ellipses for M2 and S2 are very low with 0.2 and 0.06 on the average, respectively illustrating that the tidal current in the KB is strongly rectilinear. The magnitude of the tidal residual current speed in the KB is on the order of a few cm/s and its distribution pattern is very complex. One of the most prominent features is found to be the counter-clockwise eddy recirculation cell at the mouth of the Daebang Channel.

  • To establish the process control for inhibiting browning of Doenjang, the factors of browning were investigated. The browning of Doenjang was prompted by oxygen, temperature, light and Fe. Expecially temperature, oxygen and metal were main factors of browning in Doenjang. The Color Doenjang was determined by ratios of raw materials, process of manufacture and the channel of distribution. Among ascorbic acid and anti-browning agent, anti-browning agent was effective to inhibit the browning of Doenjang. The process control to inhibit the browning of Doenjang was as follows: temperature; $20^{\circ}C$ or less than, oxygen; elimination, Fe; inhibition of inflow.

  • Newly constructed, high-rise dense building areas by urban development can cause changes in local wind fields. Wind fields were analyzed to assess the impact on the local meteorology due to the land use changes during the urban redevelopment called "Eunpyeong new town" in north-western Seoul using CFD_NIMR_SNU (Computational Fluid Dynamics, National Institute of Meteorological Research, Seoul National University) model. Initial value of wind speed and direction use analysis value of AWS (Automatic Weather Station) data during 5 years. In the case of the pre-construction with low rise built-up area, it was simulated that the spatial distribution of horizontal wind fields depends on the topography and wind direction of initial inflow. But, in the case of the post-construction with high rise built-up area, it was analyzed that the wind field was affected by high rise buildings as well as terrain. High-rise buildings can generate new circulations among buildings. In addition, small size vortexes were newly generated by terrain and high rise buildings after the construction. As high-rise buildings act as a barrier, we found that the horizontal wind flow was separated and wind speed was reduced behind the buildings. CFD_NIMR_SNU was able to analyze the impact of high-rise buildings during the urban development. With the support of high power computing, it will be more common to utilize sophisticated numerical analysis models such as CFD_NIMR_SNU in evaluating the impact of urban development on wind flow or channel.

  • Recently, a heavy rainfall under climate change causes the flood exceeded river's conveyance. Flood control methods under the limited river width are the increase of embankment, the construction of storage pockets and diversion channel, the dredging of river bed. Hwasun flood control reservoir of washland is designed as the storage pockets and the regulating gate for the control of water level. In this study, the propriety of design was investigated through hydraulic experiments for the circumstances to exclude the constant flood discharge during operation period. In the results, the over flow rate of side weir exceeded the flow of design and indicated to be able to discharge the designed flow in the regulating gate opened 1.1 m. The high velocity 7.1 m/s behind the gate has investigated to reduce under 3.3 m/s by the baffle block.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristics of flow and bed change at the wide, shallow confluence of the Geum river and Mihocheon, which has different bed slope, height, and sediment concentration condition between the main channel and tributary. RMA-2 and SED2D were used to simulate flow and bed changes at the site. Flow simulations showed that the overall flow velocity, shear layer and vortex generated at the left bank of the confluence increase as the discharge was increased. Sediment transport simulations indicated that because of the high inflow sediment concentration from Mihocheon, sediment concentration in the main river increases after the confluence, the high sediment concentration band was kept along the shear layer boundary and the left bed was aggraded after confluence.

  • In the present paper, An emphasis is laid upon effects of stern bulb on hydrodynamic property and manoeuvring performance. We carried out captive model tests in circulating water channel with two ship models of which the frame lines of aft bodies are different. such as normal stern form and stern form with bulb, but of which the other parts are exactly same. The tests conducted consist of hull resistance test, effective thrust measurement, oblique tow test, and measurements of factors related to rudder force. From the results of model tests, we discussed effects of stern bulb on hull forces and on hull-propeller-rudder interactions, comparing with normal stern form. Furthermore, we also discussed effects of stern bulb on course stability. turning ability. spiral characteristics and zig-zag manoeuvre by computer simulation. As a result, it is clarified that the adoption of stern bulb makes course stability the worse and turning ability the better. The difference of the hydrodynamic derivatives of naked hull between two ship forms cause the worse course stability of the ship with stern bulb. The differences of the effective inflow velocity to rudder and hull forces induced by steered rudder cause the better turning ability of the ship with stern bulb.

  • For the reliable prediction of maneuverability of a ship, lots of captive model tests have been carried out for over 10 years. But the parameters appearing in the mathematical model are so versatile and showing complex characteristics, and it is still hard to establish the useful formulae that we can adopt directly in the design stage. In this paper, the most important parameters in the mathematical model. i.e.($1-\omega_P$) the effective wake fraction at propeller, and $\delta_R(\beta_R)$), the effective rudder inflow angles are investigated by the captive model tests at the circulating water channel. The model is tested at designed speed and at low speed, and the drafts at both full load and ballast load conditions are taken. Propeller thrusts and rudder normal forces are measured at the given drift angle and propeller revolution. These forces are used for the analysis of the effective flow velocity or flow direction, to the propeller or rudder.

  • In this study, the SST k - ω turbulence model and the sliding mesh technology based on RANS method have been adopted to simulate the exciting force and hydrodynamic of a pump-jet propulsor in different oblique inflow angle (0°, 10°, 20°, 30°) and different advance ratio (J = 0.95, J = 1.18, J = 1.58).The fully structured grid and full channel model have been adopted to improved computational accuracy. The classical skewed marine propeller E779A with different advance ratio was carried out to verify the accuracy of the numerical simulation method. The grid independence was verified. The time-domain data of pump-jet propulsor exciting force including bearing force and fluctuating pressure in different working conditions was monitored, and then which was converted to frequency domain data by fast Fourier transform (FFT). The variation laws of bearing force and fluctuating pressure in different advance ratio and different oblique flow angle has been presented. The influence of the peak of pulsation pressure in different oblique flow angle and different advance ratio has been presented. The results show that the exciting force increases with the increase of the advance ratio, the closer which is to the rotor domain and the closer to the blades tip, the greater the variation of the pulsating pressure. At the same time, the exciting force decrease with the oblique flow angle increases. And the vertical and transverse forces will change more obviously, which is the main cause of the exciting force. In addition, the pressure distribution and the velocity distribution of rotor blades tip in different oblique flow angles has been investigated.
