  • The purpose of study was to analyze secreted nectar volume, nectar sugar content and amino acid in addition to estimating honey quantities that can ultimately reap in male and female flowers of Evodia daniellii Hemsl.. The maximum blooming period of male flowers was on 24 to 26 July in 2012. On average, nectar volume secreted by nectary was $2.73{\pm}0.73{\mu}L$ from one male flower and nectar concentration showed 17.4%. The maximum blooming period of female flowers was on 7 to 9 August in 2012. Nectar volume secreted by nectary was $0.63{\pm}0.49{\mu}L$ from one female flower and nectar concentration showed 25.7%, averagely. As results of correlation analysis between the meteorological factors and nectar characteristics, we found that nectar quantities and concentration were influenced by temperature and relative humidity. Sugar content was calculated at $48.0{\pm}5.2{\mu}g$ per a male flower and $37.8{\pm}8.7{\mu}g$ per a female flower, which meant that both values were not significantly different (Mann-Whitney's U-test, p=0.400). The minimum estimates of honey harvest for a male and female inflorescence were 67.8 g and 53.5 g, respectively. Analysis of amino acid showed that Serine, Glycine and Alanine were more abundant in male flowers, however Asparatate, Glutamate, Asparagine and Glutamine were more abundant in female flowers.

  • This experiment was conducted to examine the effect of injecting cool air from an abandoned mine during the summer time for the growth of Doritaenopsis. The air temperature of abandoned mine in Boryeong was $12{\sim}14^{\circ}C$. The day and night temperatures were set at $22^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively, from June to August in the experimental plastic house. This temperature range was within the suitable range for floral induction in Doritaenopsis. Average outside temperature was $28.4{\sim}32.8^{\circ}C$. The 3% of the crop developed flower stalk in 20 days after the treatment initiation, 65% in 45 days, and 100% in 90 days. The flower stalk length was short (48.7cm) in 30 days and long (62.4cm) in 60 days of treatment. The flower stalk length became longer as time passed. Flower spike and number of florets per stalk displayed the same tendency. Number of nodes was 6~7 and was not affected by the period. The first blooming appeared on 15th of September at 45 days and blooming tended to appear late as the period is lengthened. When the cool air from an abandoned mine was injected, the crop formed flower stalk three months earlier and bloomed four months earlier than the untreated control.

  • This study was initiated to investigate herbicidal selectivity margin with annual bluegrass and bentgrass according to growth stages through herbicidal spectrum of bispyribac-sodium and therefore to examine application possibility to prevent annual bluegrass selectively. The herbicidal efncacy by pre-emergence application was generally low. But a high herbicidal efficacy was observed over 90% for Shehpherd's purse. Foliar treatment resulted in a higher herbicidal efficacy in all tested plants except dallisgrass, lovegrass, curled dock and bentgrass as compared with pre-emergence application. We found bispyribac-sodium could be used as a selective weeding chemical between annual bluegrass and bentgrass. In regard to dose-responses to the growth stage, annual bluegrass was more susceptible to bispyribac-sodium than bentgrass for the same dosage. Particularly, bispyribac-sodium application in inflorescence emergence stage showed a greater herbicidal selectivity margin of 6.8 times with annual bluegrass over creeping bentgrass after 28 days from the application. These data demonstrated that annual bluegrass was more sensitive to bispyribac-sodium over creeping bentgrass.

  • For nine taxa of the genus Carex which consist of C. arenicola, C. chordorhiza, C. curta, C. gibba, C. laevissima, C. leiorhyncha, C. neuromrpa, C. maakii and C. remouscula with mixed pistillate and staminate flowers, morphological characters such as inflorescense, spikelet, inflorescence bract, utricle, pistillate and staminate scales, achene, length between two spikelets were observed to find useful characters for their identification. Especially, the shape and the number of spikelet were very useful characters to divide the treated nine taxa into two groups, the their keys were prepared. The first group was comprised of five species of C. arenicola, C. chordorhiza, C. curta, C. gibba, and C. remouscula, which were characterized by broadly oboval or narrowly elliptical shape of spikelet, and 3-9 spikelets per infIorescence and gradual decrease in length between two spikelets. The second group was composed of four species of C. laevissima, C. leiorhyncha, C. neurocarpa, C. maakii, which were distinguished by oval shape of spikelet, and 17-20 spikelets per infIorescence and repetition of increase.

  • There is a need to breed and distribute of domestic varieties for Lilium longiflorum because most of the lily bulbs cultivated in Korea were imported from foreign country. The L. longiflorum 'Ace' and 'Nellie White' collected from 1996 had been self-crossed from 1996 to 2010. In 2012, the L. longiflorum 'Bright LoSong' was developed as a F1 hybrid crossed between 'L2-17-4' and 'L2-16-6' that obtained by 7th self-fertilization. The 'Bright LoSong' was tested for homogeneity, regional adaptability test, consumer preference show from 2014 to 2015, and it was registered in 2017. The flower of 'Bright LoSong' is a trumpet shaped single flower with no spots. It has 5.8 flowers per plant, which is a relatively many number compared control 'Mount Carmel', Its flower diamater is 9.8cm, relatively a bit small size. And the flower inflorescence has umbel or raceme while the attitude of longitudinal axis is horizontal. The plant height is 38.4cm with 30.8 leaves per plant and 1.9cm of the leaf width. 'Bright LoSong' has a longer flowering period because of relatively small diameter or many number of flowers than those of the control 'Mount Carmel'. Thus, the 'Bright LoSong' showed a high consumer preference, and the cultivar has the advantage of being able to reproduce since the parents are pure lines.

  • There is a need to breed and distribute of domestic varieties for Lilium Asiatic hybrids because most of the lily bulbs cultivated in Korea bred from foreign country. The collected Lilium Asiatic hybrids 'Butter Pixie' for a maternal line, 'Mona' for a paternal line based on the genetic resources from 2000 had been crossed self-fertilization from 2000 to 2006. In 2008, We developed Lilium Asiatic 'Yellow LiASong' as a F1 hybrid which was crossed 'L2-18-1' and 'L2-21-4' those obtained by 4th self-fertilization. The flower of 'Yellow LiASong' is a bowl shaped single flower with no spots that 5.8 flowers per plant, which is a relatively many number compared other cultivars, and 15.5cm flower diameter with a medium size. And the flower inflorescence has umbellate and racemose while the attitude of longitudinal axis is erect. The plant height is 36.2cm with 35.5 leaves per plant and 10.7cm of the leaf length. Thus, The 'Yellow LiASong' showed a high consumer preference. Which has a longer flowering period due to having a relatively larger diameter and number of flowers than that of 'Tiny Bee', which is a comparable variety.

  • In this study, the morphological characteristics of flower and fruit in five varieties (Hancho 915ho, 930ho, 10ho, 1020ho, 1030ho) from Zanthoxylum schinifolium were investigated as new varieties with different fruiting seasons. Qualitative and quantitative characteristics were investigated, spectively. For quantitative characteristics can be measured numerically, such as size and number, the varieties were identified using ANOVA and Scheffe's multiple range test. In addition, the validity of whether the quantitative characteristics of five varieties can be explained by factor analysis was reviewed. Using UPGMA, the relationship between the five varieties was confirmed by dendrogram. As a result of ANOVA and Scheffe's multiple range test there was significant difference in inflorescence width and female flower length. It had a high contribution to distinguishing varieties, which was similar to the PCA results using factor analysis. As a result of dendrogram using cluster analysis, Hancho 915ho, 1020ho and 1030ho were similar, but there was a distinct difference in the characteristics of different flowering and fruiting periods, confirming that they were different varieties.

  • The majority of cultivated varieties of grape have perfect flowers that are clustered in an individual inflorescence. Grape flower has a single pistil, five stamens, a protective flower cap (calyptra), and a calyx. After fertilization, an individual flower develops into a single berry. Although there are a number of reported studies focusing on berry formation, berry enlargement, and sugar accumulation in grape, the morphological studies of flower, including gametophyte morphogenesis and structural change in floral organs, have not yet been studied in detail. In this study, we investigated the flower structure and development characteristics of grape using microscopy and defined the floral development stages 9 to 13 based on microspore or male gametophyte development stage from tetrad to mature pollen. We used seeded diploid table grapes 'Campbell Early' (Vitis labruscana) and 'Tamnara' (V. spp.) as plant materials. At floral development stage 9, pollen mother cells develop to tetrads. During floral development stages 10 to 11, unicellular microspore develop to mid bicellular pollen. At the end of floral stage 12, male gametophyte develops to mature tricelluar pollen. In floral stage 13, the flower cap falls off and flower bud opens. During floral development stages 9 to 12, there were no major changes in calyx length, whereas the length of the flower cap continuously increased. The flower cap-to-calyx length ratio was 2.0, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.5 at floral stages 9, 10, 11, and 12, respectively. The flower cap-to-calyx length ratio was consistent in the two grape cultivars, suggesting that the ratio is a morphological character representing floral development stage. This study provides a reference for determining floral development stage of the two grape cultivars. It will be useful for the determination of optimum time for microspore culture needed to generate doubled haploid lines and appropriate gibberellic acid treatment needed to induce parthenocarpic fruit development in 'Tamnara' grape.

  • Flowering characteristics and acorn production of Quercus acuta were studied in a Quercus acuta forest at Wando island, Korea. Three sample trees were cut and measured to investigate flowering characteristics during flowering season. Eight $20m{\times}25m$ quadrats were set up and three $1m{\times}1m$ seed traps were established within each quadrat to investigate acorn production. There were no significant differences in number of female and male inflorescence per bearing shoot among crown positions, but these values decreased from the upper part to the lower part of crown. The number of female flowers was 5,025 flowers/tree, and of the total number, 60.3% was in the upper part, 28.4% was in the middle part and 11.3% was in the lower part of crown. The number of male flowers was 7,063 flowers/tree and increased from the lower part to the upper part of crown. Acorn production of total 24 seed traps was 947 acorns/$24m^2$, and of total acorn production, 11.0% was sound, 61.9% was damaged, 25.1% was decayed and 2.0% was empty. Monthly acorn production was 240 acorns/$24m^2$ in August, 632 acorns/$24m^2$ in September, 56 acorns/$24m^2$ in October, 17 acorns/$24m^2$ in November and 2 acorns/$24m^2$ in December. Acorns fallen in October showed higher mean length, diameter and weight than those of other months.
