In this paper, a finite element technique is applied to the prediction of the wave resonance phenomena in harbors. The mild-slope equation is used with a partial reflection boundary condition introduced to model the energy dissipating effects on the solid boundary. For an efficient modeling of the radiation condition at infinity, a new infinite element is developed. The shape function of the infinite element is derived from the asymptotic behavior of the first kind of the Hankel's function in the analytical boundary series solutions. For the computational efficiency, the system matrices of the element are constructed by performing the relevant integrations in the infinite direction analytically. Comparisons with the results from experiments and other solution methods show that the present model gives fairly good results. Numerical experiments are also carried out to determine the proper distance to the infinite elements from the mouth of the halter, which directly affect the accuracy and efficiency of the solution.
A two-dimensional nonlocal heating theory of planar-type inductively coupled plasma source has been previously reported with a filamentary antenna current model. However, such model yields an infinite value of electric field at the antenna position, resulting in the infinite self-inductance of the antenna. To overcome this problem, a surface current model of antenna should be adopted in the calculation of the electromagnetic fields. In the present study, the reactor impedance is calculated based on the surface current model and the dependence on various discharge parameters is studied. In addition, a simpler method is suggested and compared with the surface current calculation.
The quantitative landslide susceptibility assessment methods can be divided into statistical approaches and geomechanical approaches based on the consideration of the triggering factors and landslide models. The geomechanical approach is considered as one of the most effective approaches since this approach proposes physical slope model and considers geomorphological and geomechanical properties of slope materials. Therefore, the geomechanical approaches has been used widely in landslide susceptibility analysis using the infinite slope model as physical slope model. However, the previous studies assumed constant groundwater level for broad study area without the consideration of rainfall intensity and hydraulic properties of soil materials. Therefore, in this study, landslide susceptibility assessment was implemented using the coupled infinite slope model with hydrologic model. For the analysis, geomechanical and hydrualic properties of slope materials and rainfall intensity were measured from the soil samples which were obtained from field investigation. For the practical application, the proposed approach was applied to Jinbu area, Gangwon-Do which was experienced large amount of landslides in July 2006. In order to compare to the proposed approach, the previous approach was used to analyze the landslide susceptibility using randomly selected groundwater level. Comparison of the results shows that the accuracy of the proposed method was improved with the consideration of the hydrologic model.

An analysis considering the fluid-structure interaction is required to strictly evaluate the seismic behavior of facilities such as, environmental facilities and dams, that store fluids. Specifically, in the case of an infinite domain in the upstream direction, such as a dam-reservoir system, this should be carefully considered. In this study, we proposed a practical numerical model for both wave propagation and fluid-structure interaction analyses of an infinite domain, for a system with a semi-infinite domain such as a dam-reservoir system. This method was applicable to the time domain, and enabled accurate boundary analysis. For an infinite fluid domain, a small number of mid-point integrated acoustic finite elements were applied instead of a general acoustic finite element, and a viscous boundary was imposed on the outermost boundary. The validity and accuracy of the proposed method were secured by comparing analytic solutions of a reservoir having infinite domain, with the parametric analysis results, for the number of elements and the size of the modeling region. Furthermore, the proposed method was compared with other fluid-structure interaction methods using additional mass.
The purpose of this paper is to extend and globalize the Walrasian evolutionary cobweb model in an independent single local market of Brock and Hommes ([3]), to the case of the global market evolution over an infinite chain of many local markets interacting each other through a diffusion of prices between them. In the case of decreasing demands and increasing supplies with a weighted average of rational and naive predictors, we investigate, via the methods of Lattice Dynamical System, the spatial-temporal behaviors of global market dynamics and show that some kind of bounded dynamics of global market do exist and can be controlled by using the parameters in the model.

Decision problem called an optimal release policies, after testing a software system in development phase and transfer it to the user, is studied. The applied model of release time exploited infinite non-homogeneous Poisson process. This infinite non-homogeneous Poisson process is a model which reflects the possibility of introducing new faults when correcting or modifying the software. The failure life-cycle distribution used mixture which has various intensity, if the system is complicated. Thus, software release policies which minimize a total average software cost of development and maintenance under the constraint of satisfying a software reliability requirement becomes an optimal release policies. In a numerical example, after trend test applied and estimated the parameters using maximum likelihood estimation of inter-failure time data, estimated software optimal release time.

This paper shows the infinite horizon model of Partially Observable Markov Decision Process with lagged information. The lagged information is uncertain delayed observation of the process under control. Even though the optimal policy of the model exists, finding the optimal policy is very time consuming. Thus, the aim of this study is to find an .eplison.-optimal stationary policy minimizing the expected discounted total cost of the model. .EPSILON.- optimal policy is found by using a modified version of the well known policy iteration algorithm. The modification focuses to the value determination routine of the algorithm. Some properties of the approximation functions for the expected discounted cost of a stationary policy are presented. The expected discounted cost of a stationary policy is approximated based on these properties. A numerical example is also shown.

We proposed a power line channel model. We adopted advantages of other power line channel models to calculate channel responses correctly and simply. Infinite geometric series reduced the calculation complexity of the multipath signal propagation. Description Matrices were also adopted to handle the network topology easily. It represents complex power line network precisely and simply. Newly proposed model considered the effect of the adjacent nodes to channel responses, which have been not considered so far. Several simulations were executed to verify the effect of the adjacent nodes. As a result we found out that it affected channel responses but its effect was limited within certain degree.
The theoretical equation for the relaxation spectrum of nonlinear viscoelastic polymeric material was derived from the Ree-Eyring and Maxwell non-Newtonian model. This model consists of infinite number of hyperbolic sine law Maxwell elements coupled in parallel plus a spring without a dashpot. Infinite number of nonlinear viscoelastic Maxwell elements can be used by specifying distribution of relaxation times, hole volumes, molecular weights, crystallite size and conformational size, etc. The experimentals of stress relaxation were carried out using the tensile tester with the solvent chamber. The relaxation spectra of nylon 6 filament fibers in various electrolytic solutions were obtained by applying the experimental stress relaxation curves to the theoretical equation of relaxation spectrum. The determination of relaxation spectra was performed from computer calculation.
Most of the process control algorithms in practice are based on the finite dimensional control theory. However, many chemical processes are described by partial differential equations (PDE's) and are infinite dimensional in nature due to spatial variation. Especially when the convection is dominant and thus diffusion can be ignored, chemical processes that are described by a system of first order hyperbolic PDE's. Such processes include tubular reactors, fixed bed reactors and pressure swinging adsorption. Conventionally such infinite dimensional systems described by PDE's are controlled by finite dimensional controllers that are designed through finite dimensional reduction of the process m...
