Objectives: This study shows feasibility and suitability of a microelectromechanical system inertial measurement unit(MEMS-IMU) as a helpful measurement device for evaluating movement system impairment syndrome. Methods: We reviewed articles of two fields in this study. First, we reviewed articles about movement system impairment syndrome(MSIS) as a brand new viewpoint of diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal pain. Second, we reviewed articles about conventional motion analysis system and inertial measurement unit(IMU) to show the superiority of IMU in analyzing the human movement. All papers were searched by SciVerse, world largest search engine and database about many academic fields including engineering and medicine. Results: Some physical quantities of human motions can be useful to the diagnosis of MSIS, and those data can be obtained by the MEMS-IMU without the weak points of the conventional motion analysis systems. Conclusions: Using MEMS-IMU as a measurement unit for diagnosing and evaluating MSIS is feasible and can be extended to many further studies.

This paper deals with the transfer alignment problem of SDINS(StrapDown Inertial Navigation System) subjected to roll and pitch motions of the ship. Specifically, to reduce alignment errors induced by measurement time-delay and ship body flexure, an error compensation method is suggested based on delay state augmentation and DCM(Direction Cosine Matrix) partial matching. A linearized error model for the velocity and attitude matching transfer alignment system is first derived by linearizing the nonlinear measurement equation with respect to its time delay and augmenting the delay state into the conventional linear state equations. And then DCM partial matching is properly combined to reduce effects of a ship's Y axis flexure. The simulation results show that the suggested method is effective enough resulting in considerably less azimuth alignment errors.

Abstract It is necessary to verify the properties of an inertial measurement unit in the flight environment before applying to military applications. In this paper, we presented a new approach to verify an inertial measurement unit(IMU) in regard to the performance and the robustness in flight environments for the high-dynamics vehicle systems. We proposed two methods for verification of an IMU. We confirmed normal operation of an IMU and properties in flight environment by using direct comparison method. And we proposed real time multi-navigation system to complement the first method. The proposed method made it possible to compare navigation result at the same time. Therefore, it is easy to analyze the performance of an inertial navigation system and robustness during the vehicle flight. To verify the proposed method, we carried out a flight test as well as an experimental test of flight vibration on the ground. As a result of the experiment, we confirmed flight environment properties of an IMU. Therefore, we shows that the proposed method can serve the reliability improvement of IMU.

A new technique for Attitude & Heading Reference System (AHRS) by using sequential measurement noise covariance (SMNC) is addressed in a vibration environments in this paper. In particular, a low-cost inertial measurement unit in general diverges in the acceleration phase or vibrating environments due to inherent properties of gravity and acceleration. In this paper, by considering current and prior measurements to estimate actual attitudes and headings in a local frame, the proposed technique overcomes these problems efficiently. Finally, the performance of the suggested approach is verified by numerical simulations.
A motion capture system is widely used in movies, computer game, and computer animation industries because it allows for creating realistic human motions efficiently. The inertial motion capture system has several advantages over more popular vision-based systems in terms of the required space and cost. However, it suffers from low accuracy due to the relatively high noise levels of the inertial sensors. In particular, the accelerometer used for measuring gravity direction loses the accuracy when the sensor is moving with non-zero linear acceleration. In this paper, we propose a method to remove the linear acceleration component from the accelerometer data in order to improve the accuracy of measuring gravity direction. In addition, we develop a simple method to calibrate the joint axis of a link to which an inertial sensor belongs as well as the position of a sensor with respect to the link. The calibration enables attaching inertial sensors in an arbitrary position and orientation with respect to a link.
Recently, multi-sensor integration techniques have been actively studied to obtain reliable and accurate navigation solution in GPS (Global Positioning System)-denied harsh environments such as urban canyons, tunnels, and underground roads. In this paper, we propose a low-cost ultrasonic-speedometer utilizing the characteristics of the ultrasonic propagation. An efficient integrated INS (inertial navigation system)/ultrasonic-speedometer navigation system is also proposed to improve the accuracy of positioning in GPS-denied environments. To evaluate the proposed system, car experiments with field-collected measurements were performed. By the experiment results, it was confirmed that the proposed INS/ultrasonic-speedometer system bounds the positioning error growth effectively even though GPS signal is blocked more than 10 seconds and a low-cost MEMS IMU (micro electro mechanical systems inertial measurement unit) is utilized.
In this paper, the alignment and navigation results by INGU(Inertial Navigation and Guidance Unit) onboard software and by Inertial Explorer which is a post-processing software specialized for IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit) are compared for identification of inertial sensor error models and estimation of alignment and navigation errors for KSLV-I INGU. For verification of the IMU error estimated by Kalman Filter of Inertial Explorer, the covariance parameters of inertial sensor error model state are identified by using stochastic error model of inertial sensors estimated by Allan variance and the alignment and navigation test with static condition and the land navigation test with dynamic condition are carried out. The validity of inertial sensor model for KSLV-I INGU is verified by comparison the alignment and navigation results of INGU on-board software and Inertial Explorer.

This paper deals with a method of aligning an aircraft fuselage and an inertial navigation sensor using three-dimensional coordinates obtained by an optical method. In order to verify the feasibility, we introduce the method to accurately align the coordinate system of the inertial navigation sensor and the aircraft reference coordinate system. It is verified through simulation that reflects the error level of the measuring device. In addition, optimization method based alignment algorithm is proposed for connection between optical sensor and inertial navigation sensor.
INS(Inertial Navigation System) calculates navigation information using a vehicle's acceleration and angular velocity without the outside information. However, when navigation is performed for a long time, navigation error gradually diverges and the performance decreases. To enhance INS's performance, the rotation of inertial measurement unit is developed to compensate error sources of inertial sensors, which is called RINS(Rotational Inertial Navigation System). This paper analyzes the influence of several errors for dual-axis RINS and the shows the results using simulation.
