  • Automation and robotic technology (ART) has been successfully applied in the manufacturing and allied industries to achieve on-time delivery of quality products at increasingly reduced costs. Meeting time, quality and cost targets still remains a big challenge in the global construction industry with prevalence of time and cost overruns. Application of ART in the construction industry could contribute to significant improvement in the efficient and effective delivery of projects to meet and exceed client expectations. However, the uptake of ART is still low in the construction industry. This study investigates the various ways in which ART could be applied to improve construction project delivery, potential areas of applications, and constraints to the uptake of the technology in the construction industry. Recommendations are made for improving the uptake of ART in the construction industry.

  • Soy and soy foods are a rich source of isoflavones, which possess several biological activities. The effect of soy isoflavones, genistin and diadzin and their respective aglycones, on glucose uptake in adipocytes isolated from normal or high-fat fed rats was examined. As expected, insulin stimulated glucose uptake in a concentration-dependent manner. However, genistin and daidzin and their aglycones inhibited glucose uptake in a concentration-dependent (25-100μM) manner. In a time-course response, the aglycones significantly inhibited glucose uptake throughout 3 hr (after 30, 60, 120, 180 min), whereas the glycones only significantly inhibited the glucose uptake after 120 min and 180 min in the isolated rat adipocytes. Thus, the glucosides of genistein and daidzein, i.e. genistin and daidzin, were much less effective in inhibiting glucose uptake than their aglycones. In addition, genistin and daidzin did not significantly affect the insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, whereas genistein and daidzein did significantly inhibited glucose uptake compared to the vehicle control group by 47.5% and 24.8%, respectively (p < 0.05). The isoflavones also significantly inhibited glucose uptake in adipocytes isolated from rats fed a high-fat diet (50% of total calorie intake) when compared to the vehicle control. Finally, the isoflavones were found to enhance lipolysis in adipocytes isolated from high-fat fed rats, where the glycerol released by the aglycones was also higher than that released by the glycones. The current results showed that the inhibitory effect of daidzein on glucose uptake was very similar to that of genistein. The aglycones were more potent in inhibiting the uptake of glucose and a more potent stimulator of lypolysis than the glycones in adipocytes isolated from high-fat fed rats.

  • Glucose uptake plays a pivotal role in maintaining whole body glucose homeostasis in adipocytes and skeletal muscles. In the present study we have shown that Fructus Piperis Longi Extracts (FPLE) can stimulate glucose uptake in OP9 adipocytes. The increasing effects of FPLE on glucose uptake were inhibited by compound C pretreatment, which means that the glucose uptake effects by FPLE were carried out by AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation. Further studies revealed that FPLE stimulated glucose transport occurs through a mechanism involving extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) activation.

  • Although the Herba Cirsii is known to posses beneficial health effects, the anti-diabetic effects and the mechanism of action have not been elucidated. In the present study we have shown that Herba Cirsii Extract (HCE) can stimulate glucose uptake in OP9 adipocytes. Unlike insulin, HCE did not stimulate the Ser473 phosphorylation and activation of Akt. The increasing effects of HCE on glucose uptake were inhibited by PD680509 and compound C pretreatment, which means that the glucose uptake effects by HCE were carried out by extracelluar signal-regulated kinase1/2(ERK1/2) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation. Further studies revealed that HCE stimulated glucose transport occurs through a mechanism involving ERK1/2 activation and AMPK activation.

  • This study was conducted to estimate carbon stock and uptake for Larix kaempferi Lamb., the single species, which is the most widely distributed one following Pinus densiflora, using data from 6th national forest inventory and forest type map of 1:5,000. Overall distribution area of Larix kaempferi in South Korea was shown as 272,800ha, in detail, Gangwon-do was the most widely distributed region with 39.6% (108,141 ha) of the whole forest area, and Gyeongsangbuk-do was 18.6%(50,839 ha), Chungcheongbuk-do was 15.1%(41,205ha) in order. As the results of analysis in carbon stock and uptake for each province, the values were high with Gyeonggi-do 109.0 tC/ha, $10.3tCO_2/ha/yr$, Gangwon-do 349.1 tC/ha, $9.7tCO_2/ha/yr$ in order, and Jeollabuk-do was the lowest with 78.3 tC/ha, $7.6tCO_2/ha/yr$. Also, the results of estimation in total carbon stocks and uptakes by year (1989~2015) were turned out that total carbon stocks and uptakes were 24,891 thousand tC, $2,428thousand\;tCO_2$ in 2015, increasing about 4.8 times and 3.8 times each compared with 5,238 thousand C/ha, $640thousand\;CO_2$ in 1989. Although forest area was decreased 26.6% with 371,884 ha in 1989 to 272,800 ha in 2015, carbon stocks and uptakes were increased in 2015 in that forest stock was increased 126% compared to 1989.

  • Objectives: Despite the pharmacological potential of the roots and stems of hemp based on literatures, active research has not been conducted for a long time. Comparative experiments were conducted on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and improvement of glucose uptake using Cannabis root and stem extracts. Methods: Antioxidant contents in Cannabis root and stem extracts were examined with total phenolic, tannin, flavonoid assay. Anti-inflammatory properties were tested in lipopolysaccharides-treated RAW264.7 cells. Efficacy of Cannabis root and stem extracts on glucose uptake was investigated using fluorescent glucose analog (2-NBDG) in palmitate-treated HepG2 cells. The mechanism of action on metabolism was examined by western blot. Results: Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory efficacy were greater in stem extracts, but improvements in glucose uptake performed under various conditions were found to be greater in root extracts. It is assumed that Cannabis root extracts exhibited an improvement in glucose uptake through mechanisms such as AMP-activated protein kinase activation, not depending on general antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Conclusions: Further research is needed on the mechanisms and substances that exhibit the anti-diabetic effects of Cannabis roots and stems.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the potential of Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) inner bark extracts as an antidiabetic agent. The ethyl acetate soluble fraction of the bark extracts was chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column to yield five compounds, which structures were elucidated by NMR spectroscopy. The isolated compounds were (+)-catehin, (-)-epicatechin, taxifolin, taxifolin-3'-O-${\beta}$-D-(+)-glucose and $\tilde{n}$-courmaric acid. The antidiabetic activity of the different fractions, including the crude extracts and isolated compounds, was evaluated by ${\beta}$-cells insulin secretion and glucose uptake in skeletal muscle cells. The insulin secretion was 128% for taxifolin at $25{\mu}g/mL$. However, the other samples had no effect on this test. For the glucose uptake activity assay, $1{\mu}M$ insulin and 2 mM metformin were used as controls. Both the crude extract and taxifolin showed relatively low activity values, but the other samples yielded glucose uptake values over 260%. ${\rho}$-courmaric acid showed the highest uptake (270%). The results confirmed that Korean red pine extracts may be used as a hypoglycemic agent.

  • The objective of this study is to give PP(polypropylene) fabric a good affinity for water. Oxygen plasma was treated to PP fabrics in a commercial glow discharge reactor with different RF power, discharge pressure, and reaction time. The PP fiber surfaces were characterized by the measurement of contact angle and ESCA. A JEOL scanning electron microscope was used to observe the surface morphology of fibers. The spontaneous water uptake amount of PP fabrics was determined by the demand wettability test. To determine the effect of aging on the surface properties of $O_2$ plasma treated PP, all the above measurements of the samples were carried out after 1, 7, 30, 60, and 150 days. The results are as follows. The PP fiber surfaces treated by $O_2$ plasma treatment have a chemical composition that consisted of various oxygen containing polar groups. Consequently, the contact angles of the treated PP fibers decreased, which improved the water uptake rate of PP fabrics. Surface roughness of the treated PP affected the fabric wettabiity as well. Wettability of the treated PP decreased and leveled off with aging. The $O_2$ plasma treatment is a simple and effective method to increase the water uptake rate of PP fabrics.

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) and modular construction are regarded as important technologies that could contribute to overcoming the crisis faced by the construction industry. However, BIM uptake in current modular construction projects is limited. Moreover, there are no specific guidelines to support decision-making regarding the application of BIM in modular construction projects. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the possibility for BIM uptake in each phase of modular construction projects in Korea. Initially, the literature detailing on BIM uptake cases in modular construction projects was reviewed. The detailed work and activities for each phase of a modular project were analyzed via a questionnaire targeting domestic modular experts, to derive items requiring improvement due to errors or changes occurring in the actual project. Ten realistic BIM uptake items were derived, reflecting the results of literature review and expert interviews. Then, the BIM uptake items in each phase were analyzed in terms of necessity and efficiency via a second questionnaire using five-point Likert scales. Finally, the BIM utilization index (BIM UI) of the BIM uptake items was suggested as a priority measure. As a result, the BIM UI of "3D coordination" (U2), "design authoring and reviews for off-site fabrication" (U3), and "detailed 3D modeling for off-site fabrication" (U4), were assigned the highest priority. The results of this study can be used as guidelines to support decision-making regarding the application of BIM in modular construction projects.

  • The dyeing behaviors of berberine chloride, palmatine chloride hydrate, and Phellodendron bark extract on silk fabric were investigated to evaluate palmatine as another chromophoric substance of Phellodendron bark. The dyeing conditions were composed of combinations of pH (3, 5, 7, 9), temperature (10, 30, 55, $80^{\circ}C$), and time (10, 30, 60 min). The results indicate that palmatine was comparable to berberine in the dyeing behaviors tested for this study and the results were statistically significant. The dye exhaustion and dye uptake of palmatine-CH were slightly lower than berberine-C, which however were not statistically significant. Similar to berberine-C, palmatine-CH favored a pH 7 condition for both dye exhaustion and dye uptake. However, palmatine-CH favors a higher dyeing temperature and longer dyeing time than berberine-C for superior dyeing results.
