  • Engineering valuation is a specialized discipline requiring expert knowledge and judgment, which scientifically estimates the economic value of industrial properties. By industrial properties, we mean engineering structures such as mines, factories, buildings, machines, and other industrial facilities as well as facilities of public enterprises. Particular industrial properties can have longer economic life if their performance is excellent and they are still suitable for current manufacturing needs. If not, its economic life will be shorter. As speed of technological progress becomes rapid, life-cycle and development period of a product is becoming shorter. In an industry characterized by rapid development of technology, industrial properties can become obsolescent faster. Even if they are in good working order, they could be no longer suitable for manufacturing new products based on radically different technology. In our research, we apply engineering approach to estimating functional economic life by factoring in technological obsolescence in such an industry.

  • This paper presents an undergraduate curriculum flowchart model for industrial engineering. Because Industrial Engineering deals with wider categories today than before, the coherent curriculum flowchart design is very difficult. We propose an effective approach using knowledge profile analysis for each course.

  • Over 40 years, the domestic manufacturing industry of Korea played the vital role in creating national wealth, employment and innovation in its economy. In 2011, industrial products made up 99.7 percent of exports, and formed 31.2 percent of GDP. Given those facts, the research of manufacturing systems engineering for higher manufacturing efficiency and its industrial applications have been essential for Korea's economic growth. In this paper, for celebrating the 40th anniversary of the foundation of Korea institute of industrial engineers (KIIE), the research results and its industrial applications of KIIE are reviewed and summarized in the area of manufacturing systems engineering over past 40 years. Directions of future manufacturing system and the role of industrial engineers for our continuous economic growth are also mentioned.

  • We survey 3,857 journal articles published on the four domestic academic journals in the industrial engineering field during 1975~2012. Titles, abstracts, and keywords of the papers are searched by means of text mining technique to draw the information on the methodologies and techniques adopted in the papers, and then we aggregate and merge similar ones to obtain final 38 representative methodologies and techniques. Trends of these methodologies and techniques are studied by analyzing frequencies, clustering, and finding association rules among them. Results of the paper can shed a light to choose tools in the future education and research in the industrial engineering related area.

  • The competitiveness of the service sector is driven by its productivity. Services innovation is essential to enhancing service productivity. This paper first presents a framework for services innovation. The framework consists of three main phases of a service lifecycle (namely, service development, service operation, and service improvement), which are supported by IT infrastructure and service R&D management functions. This paper then identifies major research issues that should be investigated in the near future. The current issues of three representative service industries (namely, healthcare service, telecommunications service, and financial service) are also discussed.

  • The number of students graduating from accredited programs has been increasing annually since the first students graduated from accredited engineering programs in Korean universities in 2004. In this paper, we evaluate the effect of engineering education accreditation by the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK). We developed performance evaluation indices based on the balanced scorecard concept and applied the proposed indicators to graduates, faculty, and industry employers to see if there are significant differences between accredited and non-accredited groups. Overall, regardless of survey object, engineering education accreditation was perceived to contribute to the elevation of engineering and science and the level of national growth. However, the differences between accredited and non-accredited groups for some key performance indicators were statistically insignificant. The results of this paper are expected to provide crucial feedback information for the improvement of engineering education accreditation in Korea.
