  • Classical methods to find a minimal set of rules based on the rough set theory are known to be ineffective in dealing with new instances added to the universe. This paper introduces an inductive learning algorithm for incrementally retrieving a minimal set of rules from a given decision table. Then, the algorithm is validated via simulations with two sets of data, in comparison with a classical non-incremental algorithm. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is effective in dealing with new instances, especially in practical use.

  • A new state evaluation approach for structural safety is presented in this study. To reduce the subjectivity of the view and judgement of each expert founded on a limited body of knowledge in cognitive and inferential process of safety assessment, we introduced inductive learning method in AI. Inductive learning derives generalization from experiences. Decision tree induction algorithm analyzes the domain knowledge, produce rules via decision trees and then allow us to determine the classification of an object from case examples. The training set of state evaluation is constructed according to the selected attributes from working reports of RC bridge girders.

  • The objective of this research is to develop a knowledge acquisition and refinement method for a multi-objective and multi-decision FMS scheduling problem. A competitive neural network and an inductive learning algorithm are integrated to extract and refine necessary scheduling knowledge from simulation outputs. The obtained scheduling knowledge can assist the FMS operator in real-time to decide multiple decisions simultaneously, while maximally meeting multiple objective desired by the FMS operator. The acquired scheduling knowledge for an FMS scheduling problem is tested by comparing the desired and the simulated values of the multiple objectives. The result show that the knowledge acquisition and refinement method is effective for the multi-objective and multi-decision FMS scheduling problems.

  • In order to grow students' rational and creative problem-solving ability which is one of the primary goals in mathematics education. students' proper understanding of mathematical concepts, principles, and rules must be backed up as its foundational basis. For the relevant teaching strategies. National Mathematics Curriculum advises that students should be allowed to discover and justify the concepts, principles, and rules by themselves not only through the concrete hands-on activities but also through inquiry-based activities based on the learning topics experienced from the diverse phenomena in their surroundings. Hereby, this paper, firstly, looks into both the meaning and the inductive reasoning process of mathematical principles and rules, secondly, suggest "learning through discovery teaching method" for the proper teaching of the mathematical principles and rules recommended by the National Curriculum, and, thirdly, examines the possible discovery-led teaching strategies using inductive methods with the related matters to be attended to.

  • In this paper, the classification performances of inductive learning methods are investigated using the credit rating data. The adopted classifiers are Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA), C4.5 of Quilan, Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Cascade Correlation Network (CCN). The data used in this analysis is obtained using the publicly announced rating reports from the three korean rating agencies. The performances of 4 classifiers are analyzed in term of prediction accuracy. The results show that no classifier is dominated by the other classifiers.

  • The paper proposes a meta-learning approach for building multi-classifier systems in a GA-based inductive learning environment. In our meta-learning approach, a classifier consists of a general classifier and a meta-classifier. We obtain a meta-classifier from classification results of its general classifier by applying a learning algorithm to them. The role of the meta-classifier is to evaluate the classification result of its general classifier and decide whether to participate into a final decision-making process or not. The classification system draws a decision by combining classification results that are evaluated as correct ones by meta-classifiers. We present empirical results that evaluate the effect of our meta-learning approach on the performance of multi-classifier systems.

  • The purpose of this study is to summarize PWIM (Picture Words Inductive Model) which is one of learner-centered vocabulary teaching-learning models, and suggest ways to implement them in Korean language education. The pictures that are used in the Korean language education field help visualize the specific shape, color, and texture of the vocabulary that is the learning target; thus, helping beginner learners to recognize the meaning of the sound. Visual material stimulates the intrinsic schema of the learner and not only becomes a 'bridge' connecting the mother tongue and the Korean language, but also reduces difficulty in learning a foreign language because of the ambiguity between meaning and sound in Korean and all languages. PWIM shows commonality with existing learning methods in that it uses visual materials. However, in the past, the teacher-centered learning method has only imitated the teacher because the teacher showed a piece-wise, out-of-life photograph and taught the word. PWIM is a learner-centered learning method that stimulates learners to find vocabulary on their own by presenting visual information reflecting the context. In this paper, PWIM is more suitable for beginner learners who are learning specific concrete vocabulary such as personal identity (mainly objects), residence and environment, daily life, shopping, health, climate, and traffic. The purpose of this study was to develop a method of using PWIM suitable for Korean language learners and teaching procedures. The researchers rearranged the previous research into three steps: brainstorming and word organization, generalization of semantic and morphological rules of extracted words, and application of words. In the case of PWIM, you can go through all three steps at once. Otherwise, it is possible to divide the three steps of PWIM and teach at different times. It is expected that teachers and learners using the PWIM teaching-learning method, which uses realistic visual materials, will enable making an effective class together.

  • This paper is concerned with analyzing the bankruptcy prediction power of three methods : Multivariate Discriminant Analysis (MDA), Inductive Learning, Neural Network, MDA has been famous for its effectiveness for predicting bankrupcy in accounting fields. However, it requires rigorous statistical assumptions, so that violating one of the assumptions may result in biased outputs. In this respect, we alternatively propose the use of two AI models for bankrupcy prediction-inductive learning and neural network. To compare the performance of those two AI models with that of MDA, we have performed massive experiments with a number of Korean bankrupt-cases. Experimental results show that AI models proposed in this study can yield more robust and generalizing bankrupcy prediction than the conventional MDA can do.

  • We investigate the appropriate design and implementation of an Inductive Learning Alogrithm with a Neural Network in order to solve both inconsistent indexing and incomplete query problems on the web. Specifically, the proposed system based queries and documents in the field of Mathematics shows how inductive learning method and neural networks can apply to information retreival. Also, this study examines all of parameters of the neural networks -- the number of node in input and output, hidden layer size and learning parameters etc. -- which are significant in determining how well the neural network will converge.

  • As digital ecosystem has been rapidly transforming into the mobile based platform, several mobile operating system, which is in charge of user interface with mobile device has been appeared. This research suggest critical factors affecting success and failure of several commercial mobile operating systems from Palm OS appearing in 1996 to main mobile OSs appearing in 2013. For this, we analyse several mobile operating OS cases, elicit factors affecting success and failure of mobile OS, and conduct ID3 based inductive learning analyses based on elicted factors and values in case dataset. Through this, we draw rules in success and failure of mobile OS and suggest strategic implications for the commercial success of mobile OS.
