  • This paper presents a study on rotor asymmetry caused by broken bars and its effects on the stator current of an induction machine under an unbalanced supply voltage. The simulation of the induction machine is based on the finite element method. In the early stage of diagnosis, we show new sidebands specific to the partial rupture of the rotor bar. Experimental tests corroborate with the simulation results.

  • Nowadays power quality effects on induction motors have gained significant attention due to wide application of these motors in industry. The impact of grid voltage fluctuations on the induction motor behavior is one of the important issues to be studied by power engineers. The degree of iron saturation is a paramount factor affecting induction motors performance. This paper investigates the effects of voltage fluctuations on motor magnetic saturation based on the harmonic content of airgap flux density by finite element method (FEM). It is clarified that the saturation harmonics under normal range of voltage fluctuations have not changed significantly with respect to pure sinusoidal conditions. Experimental results on a 1.1 kW, 380 V, 50 Hz, 2 pole induction motor are employed to validate the accuracy of the simulation results.

  • Induction heating of float metal products has an increasing importance in many applications, because it generates the heat within workpiece itself and provides high power densities and productivity. In this study, the induction heating of a steel plate to simulate the line heating is investigated by means of the Finite Element Analysis of the magnetic field and temperature distribution. A numerical model is used to calculate temperature distribution within the steel plate during the induction heating with a specially designed inductor. The effects of materital properties depending on the temperature and magnetic field are taken into consideration in an iterative manner. The simulation results show good magnetic field with experimental data and provide good understanding of the process. Since the numerical model demonstrates to be suitable for analysis of induction heating process, the effects of air gap and frequency on magnetic-flux and power-density distribution are also investigated. It is revealed that these process parameters have an important roles on the electro-magnetic field and power-density distribution governing the temperature distribution of the plate.

  • A rat chemokine, cytokine-induced neutrophil chemoattractant-1 (CINC-1) has chemotactic and activating properties to neutrophils. Rat kidney epithelioid NRK-52E cells contained 4 ng/ml of ClNC-1 as a basal level and their CINC-1 production was significantly increased by stimulation with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of E. coli. Maximal induction of ClNC-1 was 58 ng/ml when 3 ${\mu}g/ml$ of LPS was treated to the NRK-52E cells. Inhibitory effects on CINC-1 induction in LPS-stimulated NRK-52E cells by extracts prepared from herbal medicines and wild plants in Korea were analyzed. At the final concentration of 100 ${\mu}g/ml$ , 9 species out of 304 species of herbal extracts exhibited more than 50% of inhibition on the CINC-1 induction. The active extracts prepared from Artemisia argyi, Lythrum salicaria, Machilus thunbergii, Magnolia sieboldii, Nelumbo nucifera, Prunus persica, Rubus coreanus, Sanguisorba officinalis, and Tripterygium regelii have been sequentially fractionated to obtain methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, butanol, and aqueous layers. Among solvent fractions of the active herbal extracts, methylene chloride fractions of Artemisia argyi and Magnolia sieboldii exhibited the highest inhibitory effects on CINC-1 induction in LPS-stimulated NRK-52E cells.

  • To find heavy metal-specific effects on the photosynthetic apparatus of higher plants, we investigated effects of $CuCl_2$, HgCl_2$ and $ZnCl_2$ on electron transport activity and chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics of chloroplasts isolated from barley seedlings. Effects on some related processes such as germination, growth and photosynthetic pigments of the test plants were also studied. Germination and growth rate were inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner by these metals. Mercury was shown to be the most potent inhibitor of germination, growth and biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments of barley plants. In the inhibition of electron transport activity, quantum yield of PS II, and chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics of chloroplasts isolated from barley seedlings, mercury chloride showed more pronounced effects than other two metals. Contrary to the effects of other two metals, mercury chloride increased variable fluorescence significantly and abolished qE in the fluorescence induction kinetics from broken chloroplasts of barley seedlings. This increase in variable fluorescence is due to the inhibition of the electron transport chain after PS ll and the following dark reactions. The inhibition of qE could be attributed to the interruption of pH formation and do-epoxidation of violaxathin to zeaxanthin in thylakoids by mercury. This unique effect of mercury on chlorophyll fluorescence induction pattern could be used as a good indicator for testing the presence and/or the concentration of mercury in the samples contaminated with heavy metals.

  • To investigate the cardiopulmonary and anesthetic effects of propofol in dogs, experimental dogs were randomly divided into 4 groups (propofol infusion anesthesia, P/INF, propofol intermittent anesthesia, P/INTER, propofol induction anesthesia, P/ISO, thiopental Na induction anesthesia, T/ISO) and monitored analgesic and anesthetic effects, recovery time, body temperature, heart rate, mean arterial pressure, respiratory rate, systolic and diastolic pressure. In all groups, apnea was not observed. In the P/INF group, the respiratory rate(RR) was slightly decreased, but in the P/INTER group, RR was increased and shallowing. In the groups of P/ISO and T/ISO, the respiratory rate was decreased. Heart rate(HR) was increased after induction anesthesia in all groups, but gradually decreased. Mean arterial pressure(MAP) was decreased after injection anesthesia in the groups of P/INF and P/INTER. In the groups of P/ISO and T/ISO, however, MAP was slightly increased. Systolic and diastolic arterial pressure were gradually decreased after induction anesthesia, but not significantly. In the groups of P/INF and P/ISO, recovery time was shorter than the groups of P/INTER and T/ISO. In all groups, body temperature of animals was decreased gradually according to time but no significant changes were observed. Propofol injection doesn't make the complete loss of responses of animals, especially, in the P/INTER group. In the P/INF group, deep pain was present until the end of anesthetic period. During recovery period, any other side effects except incoordination were not monitored. The present study suggested that infusion anesthesia was superior to intermittent anesthesia as injection anesthetic agent, and propofol was better than thiopental Na as induction anesthetic agent.

  • To study allelopathic porential of naturally occurring substances emitted from Pinus koraiensis, the effects of water exrracts and volatile substances of the tree on callus induction and bacterial culture were examined. The induction and growth of callus were inversely proportional to the concentration of the extracts and of the essential oils supplemnted to Murashige and Skoog's media. However, low concentration(5μl/l) of essential oil promoted callus growth. In germiculture of several bavteria, the extracts of Pinus koraiensis markedly showed the inhibitory effects on bacterial growth. It was, therefore, confirmed that the KDICical substances of Pinus koraiensis tree clearly showed that biological toxic activity at high concentrations.

  • This paper describes the effects of rotor eccentricity in squirrel cage induction machines. Asymmetric electro-magnetic force caused by the frictional worn bearing, rotor misalignment and unbalanced rotor etc. generates an asymmetrical operation, vibration and electro-magnetic noise. The need for detection of these rotor eccentricities has pushed the development of monitoring methods with increasing sensitivity and noise immunity. In this paper, we focus on investigating the asymmetrical operation considering of unbalanced magnetic pull in squirrel-cage induction motor with 380 [V], 7.5 [kW], 4P, 1,768 [rpm]. The effects of the non-symmetric rotor and magnetic force are simulated by finite element method (FEM) and tested using search coils for measuring the actual air-gap flux.

  • The main aim of this paper is to study effects of different voltage sags and their intensity on the behavior of induction motors using a simulation approach. For this purpose, necessary simulation was done in Matlab - Simulink first. Then, to ensure-reasonable accuracy of the simulation, some results of the simulation were compared with the corresponding results measured in the laboratory. Then effects of intensity of symmetric voltage sag (three phase) and its starting point on the behavior of small and large induction motors was studied using simulation and subsequently, the effects of asymmetric voltage sags (single phase and two phase) has also been studied and finally the conclusion of the study was presented.

  • This Paper presents the effects according to broken rotor bar of squirrel cage induction motor. The rotor faults of induction motors may cause bad effects on the performance of the motor. An accurate modeling and analysis of characteristics of damaged rotor bar in the induction motor are developed using FEM(Finite Element Method). The results can be useful for real-time on-line monitoring system of an induction motor.
