  • In this paper we study on the semiconductor characteristic by calculating the variation of reflection function in microstrip lines, which has open-ended termination containing an optically induced plasma region. The variation of impedances resulting from the presence of plasma has evaluated with time and frequency domain. The responses have been also evaluated theoretically for changing the phase of the variation in the reflection.

  • This study was performed for the analysis of the variation characteristics on riverbed according to the arrangement of stream. It was monitored of the variation progress of riverbed dependent on the elapsed time after the arrangement and It was studied that the hydraulic adjustment of the riverbed caused by the variation of the riverbed. The large amount of deposit just after the construction in which the riverbed was arranged to natural form was come from the reduction of flow rate by the installed artificialities such as weirs and stone weirs and by the stones or the concrete blocks attached to the stream sides of riverbanks. This phenomenon was well consistent with the usual characteristics that the accumulation is induced on upper stream of hydraulic artificialities and the erosion is induced on down stream of hydraulic artificialities. The large reduction of the deposit 1 year later after the construction showed that the riverbed eroded considerably because of the recovery of flow amount and the rise of flow rate.

  • The spin transfer torque generated by a spin-polarized current can induce the shift of the magnetic domain-wall position. In this work, we study theoretically the current-induced domain-wall motion by using the collective coordinate approach [Gen Tatara and Hiroshi Kohno, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 86601 (2004)]. The approach is extended to include not only the domain-wall position and the polarization angle changes but also the domain-wall width variation. It is demonstrated that the width variation affects the critical current.

  • Numerical stability analysis of an unsaturated infinite slope under rainfall-induced infiltration conditions was performed using generalized effective stress to unify both saturated and unsaturated conditions The soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) of sand with a relative density of 75% was initially measured for both drying and wetting processes. The hydraulic conductivity function (HCF) and suction stress characteristic curve (SSCC) were subsequently estimated. Under the rainfall-induced infiltration conditions, transient seepage analysis of an unsaturated infinite slope was performed using the finite element analysis program, SEEP/W. Based on these results, the stability of an unsaturated infinite slope under rainfall-induced infiltration conditions was examined in relation to suction stress. According to the results, the negative pore-water pressure and water content within the slope soil changed over time due to the infiltration. In addition, the variation of the negative pore-water pressure and water content led to a variation in suction stress and a subsequent change in the slope's factor of safety during the rainfall period.

  • To properly extract the strain components under varying operational conditions is very important in bridge health monitoring. The abnormal sensor readings can be correctly identified and the expected operational performance of the bridge can be better understood if each strain components can be accurately quantified. In this study, strain components under varying load conditions, i.e., temperature variation and live-load variation are evaluated based on field strain measurements collected from a real concrete box-girder bridge. Temperature-induced strain is mainly regarded as the trend variation along with the ambient temperature, thus a smoothing technique based on the wavelet packet decomposition method is proposed to estimate the temperature-induced strain. However, how to effectively extract the vehicle-induced strain is always troublesome because conventional threshold setting-based methods cease to function: if the threshold is set too large, the minor response will be ignored, and if too small, noise will be introduced. Therefore, an autoencoder framework is proposed to evaluate the vehicle-induced strain. After the elimination of temperature and vehicle-induced strain, the left of which, defined as the model error, is used to assess the operational performance of the bridge. As empirical techniques fail to detect the degraded state of the structure, a clustering technique based on Gaussian Mixture Model is employed to identify the damage occurrence and the validity is verified in a simulation study.

  • This paper discusses the chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement in marine concrete structures focusing on the variability in the progress of deterioration. Through tests and analyses of reinforced concrete slabs taken out from existing open-pile structures that have been in service for 30 to 40 years, the following topics were particularly discussed: variation in chloride ion profiles of concrete, variation in corrosion properties of reinforcement embedded in concrete, and influence of the reinforcement corrosion on the load-carrying capacity of the concrete slabs. As a result, their variability was found to be very large even in one reinforced concrete slab with almost the same conditions. It was also discussed how to determine the calculation parameters for prediction of decreasing in load-carrying capacity of concrete members with chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement.

  • A dynamic modeling of a rotating pretwist blade which interacts with the fluid is proposed in this study. The hybrid deformation variable modeling method is employed to derive the equations of motion. The external force and moment induced by the fluid (with fixed configurations of the blade) are obtained by fluid flow analysis and tabulated in a database. This database is efficiently utilized to save the computational effort to calculate the dynamic response of the blade. The numerical results show that the fluid affects the transient response as well as frequency characteristics of the system.

  • MRE(magneto-rheological elastomers) is a material which shows reversible and various modulus in magnetic field. Comparing to conventional rubber vibration isolator, MREs are able to absorb vibration of broader frequency range. These characteristic phenomena result from the orientation of magnetic particles named carbonyl iron powder(CIP) in rubber matrix. In this paper, simulation on variation rate of shear modulus for anisotropic MRE due to volume fraction of CIP and an effective permeability model was applied to predict the field-induced shear modulus of MREs. Also, the variation rate of shear modulus for anisotropic MRE was derived using magneto-mechanical theory. Based on Maxwell-Garnett mixing rule, the increment of shear modulus was calculated to evaluate the shear modulus of MREs with column structure of CIP due to induced current. The simulation results on variation rate of shear modulus can be applied to the variable mechanical system of MRE such as tunable vibration absorber, stiffness variable bush and mount.

  • Limit elastic speed analysis of Al/SiC-based functionally graded annular disk of uniform thickness has been carried out for two cases, namely: metal-rich and ceramic rich. In the present study, the unknown field variable for radial displacement is solved using variational method wherein the solution was obtained by Galerkin's error minimization principle. One of the objectives was to identify the variation of induced stress in a functionally graded disk of uniform thickness at limit elastic speed using modified rule of mixture by comparing the induced von-Mises stress with the yield stress along the disk radius, thereby locating the yield initiation. Furthermore, limit elastic speed has been reported for a combination of varying grading index (n) and aspect ratios (a/b).Results indicate, limit elastic speed increases with an increase in grading indices. In case of an increase in aspect ratio, limit elastic speed increases up to a critical value beyond which it recedes. Also, the objective was to look at the variation of yield stress corresponding to volume fraction variation within the disk which later helps in material tailoring. The study reveals the qualitative variation of yield stress for FG disk with volume fraction, resulting in the possibility of material tailoring from the processing standpoint, in practice.

  • This paper presents results from speech production experiments on English, Korean, and Hindi that compare variation in the acoustic expression of dissimilar phonological laryngeal contrast in stops conditioned by prosodic prominence. Target stops are analyzed from utterance-initial, -medial, and -final positions, with a variation in contrastive focal accent, from the speech data by six male American English speakers, five male Seoul Korean speakers, and five male Delhi Hindi speakers. The results show that prosodic prominence conditions enhanced distinctiveness between contrastive segments in the three languages. The manner in which prosodic prominence and prosodic phrase structure is marked at the level of segmental variation is, however, found to be language-specific to some extent. In addition, a correlation between the size of the phonological inventory and the corresponding acoustic variation was found but the linear correlation was not strongly supported with the findings in the present study.
