Early sexual maturation through temperature stimulation was induced in female and male of yezo scallop. Gonadosomatic index (GSI) in female showed $9.12{\pm}2.9$ in January, $14.89{\pm}2.9$ in February and $21.3{\pm}1.4$ in March in experiment I. GSI in experiment I showed a significant increase (P < 0.05) and in experiments II and III were not show significant variations (P > 0.05). It also showed significant between the control and the experiments I, II, and III in February (P < 0.05) measurements. Experiment I has showed good results in sexual maturation and spawning when compared with other experiments II and III and the control. Histological observation showed that ovary condition was in a growing stage in all the experiments I, II, and III. In February, ovary condition through histological observation was a late mature stage in all the experiments I, II, and III except the control of a growing stage. GSI and gonad weight were $4.4{\pm}0.88$ and 2.8 g, respectively in November whereas it was $15.1{\pm}2.8$, and 11.7 g, respectively in January and $21.7{\pm}5.4$, and 19.4 g, respectively in February after rearing at a water bath of $12^{\circ}C$ depending on the condition of experiment I. It was possible early releasing of eggs and sperms of yezo scallop in February instead of the middle of April to the end of May being spawning period. Fertilized eggs have become a gastrula stage through a spiral cleavage and then become a trochophore larvae after 36 hours. After 10 days, D-shaped larvae have changed into an umbo stage larvae and attached to juveniles in the post larvae after 20-23 days.
Growth hormone (GH) is obligatory for growth and development. But, there is controversy on the GH effect about reproductive processes of sexual differentiation, pubertal maturation, gonadal steroidogenesis, gametogenesis and ovulation. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of GH on estrus, ovulation and embryo implantation. The results obtained were as follows. GH stimulated to increase estrus rate (p<0.05), pregnancy rate (p<0.05), and total fetus number in mice treated for superovulation. Also, the correlation between GH and steroids, E2 and P4, at peri-estrus stage/ peri-ovulation stage/ peri-implantation stage of the superovulation-induced mice was examined. Consequently, GH co-injected with PMSG especially increased P4 level (p<0.05) at peri-estrus stage of superovulationinduced mice. In conclusion, GH co-treatment in superovulation system boosted the rate of estrus, pregnancy and total fetus by increasing progesterone level at peri-estrus stage of superovulation-induced mice.
This study investigated the correlationship between artificial maturation season and reproduction coefficient of cultured eel Anguilla japonica from May (spring) to next January (winter). The brood stock, female eels ($400{\sim}600\;g$) were artificially matured by weekly intramuscular injections of salmon pituitary extracts (SPE, 20 mg/fish) to induce a completion of vitellogenesis. After completion of vitellogenesis, final oocyte maturation and ovulation was induced by injection of $17{\alpha}$, $20{\beta}-dihydroxyprogesterone$ (DHP) at about $2\;{\mu}g/g$ body weight. Most fish ovulated $15{\sim}18\;h$ following the DHP injection. The ovulated fish were induced to natural spawning or artificial fertilization by the dry method. Males ($200{\sim}350\;g$) were received weekly intramuscular injections of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) at a dosage of 1 IU/g body weight to induce testicular maturation and spermiation. Seasonal reproduction coefficient which includes the rate of ovulation, buoyancy, fertilization and hatching of eggs in the artificially matured eel during spring to summer ($May{\sim}July$) were significantly higher than the other season, while there were no significant difference among spring and summer (P<0.05). Furthermore, the number of eggs spawned and larvae hatched in the artificially maturated eel during spring to summer ($May{\sim}July$) were significantly higher than the other season, while there were no significant difference in spring and summer (P<0.05). These results indicate that artificial maturation by hormone treatment of A. japonica was successful only during spring to summer, which is the maturation period in the wild stock in nature. Consequently, it is possible to determine the period of artificially induced sexual maturity by the reproduction coefficient which includes the rate of ovulation, buoyancy, fertilization and hatching of eggs in the cultured eel A. japonica.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the timing of precocious puberty and the factors inducing precocious puberty in elemental school girls students of low grades. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade 253 elemental girls students from the Goryong province were randomly selected, G and D elemental school. sexual maturation rate was assessed physical examination by the parents. After obtaining an informed consent, a questionnaire was administered to the parents; sexual maturation rate was assessed by self physical examination, eating habits, lifestyle and home background were evaluated to determine the factors that induced precocious puberty. The data were statistically analyzed. We selected 253 girls: The total percentage of the precocious puberty was 26.1%. 7(7.8%) 6-year-old girls, 9 (13.2%) 7-year-old girls, 50 (52.6%) 8-year-old girls were in breast stage 2 and over. The main factors influencing precocious puberty were obesity scale, frequency of eating instant food, TV watching time, stress levels and broken family. A high rating on the obesity scale and high frequency of eating instant food, too much time in front of TV, high stress and broken family indicated advanced stage of puberty. This study show that prevalence ratio of the precocious puberty was 26.1%. The significant influencing factors in advanced puberty were obesity scale and frequency of instant food, TV watching time, high stress and broken family.
The sexual reproduction of the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas is reviewed for a comprehensive understanding of the complex processes. The sexual life cycle of C. reinhardtii is distinguished into five main stages: gametogenesis, gamete activation, cell fusion, zygote maturation, and meiosis and germination. Gametogenesis is induced by nitrogen starvation in the environment. C. reinhardtii has two mating types: mating type plus ($mt^+$) and mating type minus ($mt^-$), controlled by a single complex mating type locus ($MT^+$ or $MT^-$) on linkage group VI. In the early gametogenesis agglutinins are synthesized. The $mt^+$ and $mt^-$ agglutinins are encoded by the autosomal genes SAG1 (Sexual AGglutination1) and SAD1 (Sexual ADhesion1), respectively. The agglutinins are responsible for the flagellar adhesion of the two mating type of gametes. The flagellar adhesion initiates a cAMP mediated signal transduction pathways and activates the flagellar tips. In response to the cAMP signal, mating structures between two flagella are activated. The $mt^+$ and $mt^-$ gamete-specific fusion proteins, Fus1 and Hap2/Gcs1, are present on the plasma membrane of the two mating structures. Contact of the two mating structures leads to develop a fertilization tubule forming a cytoplasmic bridge between the two gametes. Upon fusion of nuclei and chloroplasts of $mt^+$ and $mt^-$ cells, the zygotes become zygospores. It is notable that the young zygote shows uniparental inheritance of chloroplast DNA from the $mt^+$ parent and mitochondrial DNA from the $mt^-$ parent. Under the favorable conditions, the zygospores divide meiotically and germinate and then new haploid progenies, vegetative cells, are released.

Estrogen has dramatic effects on the development and function of the reproductive tract in mammals. Although diethylstilbestrol (DES) triggers the development of reproductive organs in immature animals, continued exposure to DES induces dysfunction of the female reproductive tract in mice. To investigate the effects of neonatal estrogen exposure on the reproductive tract of female chickens, we implanted DES pellets into the abdominal region of immature female chicks and then examined the effects of DES on the oviducts of both immature chicks and sexually mature chickens (30 weeks old). DES induced mass growth and differentiation of the oviduct in immature chicks. The chick oviduct increased by 2.7- and 29-fold in length and weight, respectively, following primary DES stimulation. In secondary DES stimulation, the length and weight of the chick oviduct increased by 4.5- and 74-fold, respectively. Additionally, DES treatments caused abnormal development of the infundibulum and magnum in hen oviducts. Furthermore, infundibulum abnormality gave rise to unusual ovulation of follicles and resulted in infertility and dysfunction of the magnum, such as less production of egg white proteins. Our results indicate that DES exposure during early developmental stages in chickens has detrimental effects on the development and maintenance of the female reproductive tract after sexual maturation.
To study the effect of salinity on maturation and spawning, two series of experiments were carried out during November, 1998- July, 1999 and January, 1999- March 2000. In the first series, the control group (C) was reared at 14.3$^{\circ}C$ and 35.1$\textperthousand$ S, but the experimental group was reared at 33.8$\textperthousand$ S. In the second series, they were also exposed to approximately the same temperature but the experimental group was reared at still lowered salinity of 2p.6$\textperthousand$. Survival, food intake and growth of the experimental groups in either series reared at lower salinities were higher than those of their respective control groups. At lower salinity, larger number of females attained spontaneous sexual maturity and successfully spawned. Hatching success of the eggs spawned by the experimental females reared at lower salinities was also higher (54-56$\textperthousand$) than that (~19%) of the control group reared at higher salinity.
Induction of triploid cherry salmon, Oncorhynchus ma.sou was performed by the heat shock procedure. The triploids were induced by 15 and 20 min heat shock treatments after 10 min fertilization at $28^{\circ}C$. Incidences of the triploidy were $91.4\%\;and\;89.8\%$, respectively. Nucleus and erythrocyte from the induced triploids larger than those of the diploids in major axis, minor axis, major axis/minor axis, surface area and volume. The chromosome number of diploid was 2n= 66 (17 pairs of metacentrics or submetacentrics, 16 pairs of acrocentrics or telocentrics), and that of triploid was 3n=99. Satellites were observed in the short arm of the largest telocentrics, and these may be useful marker to determine the polyploidization. Diploid have outgrown to triploid, and female have also outgrown to male in the triploid group during the 22 months of observation period after hatching. During the spawning season, 22 to 26 months after hatching, diploid were observed the growth retardation because of their sexual maturation, however the triploid showed continuous growth.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the timing of puberty and the factors inducing advanced puberty in elemental school students of low grades. Methods : The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade elemental students from the Goyang province were randomly selected, and their sexual maturation rate was assessed by physical examination. After obtaining an informed consent, a questionnaire was administered to the parents; eating habits, lifestyle, use of growth-inducing medication, and present illness of the students were evaluated to determine the factors that induced advanced puberty. The data were statistically analyzed. Results : We selected 170 children and the girls:boys sex ratio was 1.2:1. Two 9-year-old boys were in genital stage 2. Two (14.3%) 6-year-old girls, 6 (19.4%) 7-year-old girls, 15 (39.6%) 8-year-old girls, and 4 (57.1%) 9-year-old girls were in breast stage 2. The average pubertal timing predicted for girls was $9.11{\pm}1.86$ years. The main factors influencing pubertal timing were obesity scale, frequency of eating fast food, and the use of growth-inducing medication. A high rating on the obesity scale and high frequency of eating fast food indicated advanced stage of puberty. Growth-inducing medication induced puberty through obesity. Conclusion : We proposed that predictive average pubertal timing in girls was 9.11${\pm}$1.86 years, which was consistent with the previously reported findings from abroad. The significant influencing factors in advanced puberty were obesity scale and frequency of fast food.
This study was conducted to increase the efficiency of farming practice in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, by sex reversal and chromosome-set manipulation techniques. To obtain phenotypic males, hormonal sex reversal was carried out using an exogenous hormone treatment method. 5 mg of 17 alpha-methyltestosterone per kg diet was supplied for 82 days after first feeding at $10^{\circ}C$ and $13^{\circ}C$. More than 93% of the male population was produced by this method and growth of hormone-treated fish at $13^{\circ}C$ was faster than that of untreated bi-sexual groups. Induced diploid gynogenesis was carried out using artificial insemination of UV-irradiated sperm into haploid eggs. Based on the appearance of the rate of haploid syndrome and survival of embryo, a UV ray dose of at least $3,600\;erg/cm^2$ was required to inactivate rainbow trout sperm genetically. Haploid embryos were restored to diploid by blocking the extrusion of the second polar body using heat shock treatment at $28^{\circ}C$ for 20 min, 10 min post insemination. Gynogenetic diploid sex ratios were confirmed after maturation of the fish erythrocyte measurements and chromosome counts.
