  • To find serotonin(5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT)-antagonizing activities in traditional herbal drugs, crude extracts from 66 kinds of traditional herbal drugs were randomly screened for inhibitory effects on 5-hydroxytryptophan(HTP)-induced diarrhea in mice. Intraperitoneal injection of 5-HTP(2.5 mg/kg) induced diarrhea in 92% of mice, when observed from 10 to 15 min after injection. Crude extracts(2 g/kg) from 66 kinds of traditional herbal drugs were orally pretreated for 1 h before 5-HTP injection. Of the 66 herbal drugs screened, Ephedrae Herba(麻黃), Cimicifugae Rhizoma(升麻), Anisi stellati Fructus(八角茴香), Aurantii Fructus(枳實), Polygalae Radix(遠志) showed the most potent inhibiting activities against 5-HTP(2.5 mg/kg)-induced diarrhea in mice. There are at least 3 possible mechanisms that would be responsible for the inhibitory effect of crude extracts on 5-HTP-induced diarrhea; 1) crude extract-induced inhibition of the activity of aromatic aminoacid decarboxylase catalyzing the conversion of 5-HTP to 5-HT, 2) crude extract-induced blockade of 5-HT receptor(s) in the gastrointestinal tract responsible for 5-HTP-induced diarrhea, 3) crude extract-induced inhibition of gastrointestinal activity, irrespective of 5-HT system. The exact mechanisms and molecules, responsible for the inhibitory effect of crude extracts on 5-HTP-induced diarrhea remain to be clarified.

  • Cognitive impairment is considered to be key research topics in the field of neurodegenerative diseases and in understanding of learning and memory. In the present study, we investigated neuroprotective effects of Schisandra chinensis (SC) and Ribes fasciculatum (RF) extracts in hydrogen peroxide-induced neuronal cell death in vitro and scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in Sprague Dawley® (SD) rat in vivo. Apoptotic cell death in neuroblastic PC12 cell line was induced by hydrogen peroxide for 1 hour at 100 μM. However, mixture of SC and RF treatment prevented peroxide induced PC12 cell death with no neurotoxic effects. For in vivo experiment, the effect of SC and RF extracts on scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in SD rat was evaluated by spontaneous alternation behavior in Y-Maze test. After 30 min scopolamine injection, the scopolamine-induced rats presented significantly decreased % spontaneous alteration and acetylcholine level, compared to non-induced group. However, treatment of SC+RF extracts rescued the reduced % spontaneous alteration with acetylcholine concentration from hippocampus in scopolamine-induced rats. These results suggested that mixture of SC and RF extract may be a potential natural therapeutic agent for the prevention of cognitive impairment.

  • This paper presents the light-induced effects on the elelctrical and optical properties of undoped and doped hydrogenated amorphous silicon films. The changes in the conductivities and the activation energies of various types of a-Si:H films due to the prolonged exposure to light have been characterized as a function of deposition conditions and illumination periods. The dark conductivity changes may be quenched for heavier doped a-Si:H films. We have also analyzed the variations of micro-structure of a-Si:H film such as silicon-hydrogen bondings in the rocking and stretching modes utilizing infrared spectroscopy. From the experimental results, it is elucidated that doping effects must be crucial to the degradations of the fundamental properties of a-Si:H due to light-induced effects.

  • The effects of Picrorrhiza Rhizoma (PR) aqueous extracts were observed on xylene-induced acute inflammation. The xylene was topically applied 60 min after administration of 500, 250 and 125 mg/kg of PR extracts, and all animals were sacrificed 2 hrs after xylene application. The changes on ear weights, histolopathological analyses of ear were evaluated as compared with indomethacin and dexamethasone 15 mg/kg treated groups - well known anti-inflammatory agents. Xylene application resulted in marked increases in induced ear weights as compared with intact control ear. Severe vasodilation, edematous changes of ear skin and increase in the thickness of the ear tissues as acute inflammation were detected in xylene-treated control ears at histopathological observation. However, these xylene-induced acute inflammatory changes were dosedependently decreased by oral treatment of PR extracts. Therefore, it is concluded that PR extracts has favorable anti-inflammatory effects on xylene-applicated acute ear inflamed mice.

  • In order to investigate pharmacological properties of New Wonbang Woohwangchungsimwon Pill (NSCH) and Wonbang Woohwangchungsimwon Pill (SCH), the effects of NSCH and SCH on cerebral ischemia and central nervous system were compared. Cerebral ischemia insult was performed using unilateral carotid artery occlusion in mongolian gerbils. The histological observations showed preventive effects of NSCH and SCH treatments with ischemia-induced brain damage. The ATP in brain tissue was decreased in vehicle-treated ischemic gerbils. This decrease was prevented by SCH treatment. In contrast to what was inhibited by NSCH and SCH treatments. While NSCH and SCH had no effects on the hexobarbital-induced sleeping time, they prevented the seizures induced by electric shock and strychnine. NSCH and SCH showed sedative effect in rotarod and spontaneous activity test. Furthermore, NSCH and SCH showed anti-stress effect. Our findings suggest that the pharmacological profiles of NSCH on cerebral ischemia and central nervous system are similar to those of SCH.

  • The effects of antioxidants such as ascorbyl palmitate(AP), tocopherol( Toc), BHA and ascorbyl palmitate+ tocopherol(AP+ Toc) on lipid peroxide formations in lard have been investigated during storage at 50oC after gamma irradiation with the dose of 1~10kGy. Immediately gamma irradiation greatly increased the initiative oxidation of lard as expected. But antioxidants were found to be greatly effective in minimizing the radiation induced peroxidation of lard. The decreasing order of effects on their antioxidative activities was AP>AP+ Toc>BHA> Toc. Oxidation of lard during storage at 50oC after irradiation induced the acceleration of autooxidation. But the additions of an tioxidants inhibited the formation of peroxides. Their antioxidative activities during storage were BHA> AP+ Toc> Toc>AP. Especially AP+ Toc mixture was not significantly different from BHA (p>0.05).

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate the factors of affect induced by fashion advertising and to analyze the effects of affect on advertising effects: advertising preference, brand preference, and purchase intention. A total of 400 college students were surveyed in September, 2006, using 4 TV fashion advertisements(Bean pole, Bang bang, Nike, and Adidas). The data were analyzed with factor analysis, multiple regression analysis, ANOVA, Scheffe Test, Cronbach's $\alpha$, and path analysis, using the SPSS 12.0. The results were as follows; 1) Two factors of affect were identified: 'pleasure' and 'domination and arousal'; 2) There were differences of induced affect factors, advertising preference, brand preference, and purchase intention among 4 TV fashion advertisements; 3) Advertising preference was more affected by 'pleasure' than by 'domination and arousal'; 4) Brand preference was affected by advertising preference, 'domination and arousal' and 'pleasure' in order of significance; and 5) Purchase intention was affected by brand preference, 'domination and arousal', advertising preference, and 'pleasure' in order of significance.
