Even though the control device of the heating system works well, insufficient water flow rates can degrade control performance and thermal comfort. The water flow rate should be adjusted appropriately to cope with the heating load of each zone. In order to solve these problems, a new balancing concept 'dynamic balancing' was proposed where a balancing valve opening can be automatically modulated according to the heating condition of the room. This study analyzed the effects of dynamic balancing upon indoor thermal environment and energy consumption in a radiant floor heating system through field measurement. Under part-load conditions, the use of a dynamic balancing is a more effective method to reduce energy consumption and to prevent a cavitation. Dynamic balancing is able to help boost the temperature of a room in the start-up period.
Installation of ceiling type unit is achieved by one of efforts for agreeable classroom environment embodiment along with economic growth. But research about changing the position of ceiling type unit is lacking in present. Therefore, this thesis is to study the thermal environment of 5 different position cases of ceiling type, namely Case A, B, C, D, E. Here, Case C is the case that has the position of ceiling type center of the classroom and the other 4 alternatives are 0.7 m away from the Case C according to x and z axis. In this thesis temperature distributions, air current distribution, heat amenities such as PMV of occupants are analyzed as the environmental factors. Through these factors, Case C and Case D are the better position alternatives than the alternatives of Case A, Case B and Case E because the latter cases the air current reaches directly to indoor occupants so that occupants feel chilly. This thesis has a conclusion under the condition of only one inlet air temperature and seat arrangement. But afterwards more inlet air condition and seat arrangement must be considered.
Building energy saving have been put effort in a long time since buildings consume about 40.6% of total energy use, where heating, cooling and electrical lighting requirement results in energy consumption of building significantly. The window is an important part of building envelope, it usually brings a certain heat load from solar radiation while it allows light passing through, and properly leads to overheating in summer, hence the cooling load increase sand cause of thermal uncomfortable factor. The purpose of this study was to evaluate internal shade performance according to color and materials. There is growing interest in improving the sense of comfort among students who spend most of their time in the classroom. The study examined thermal environment and light environmental performance according to the color and materials of internal blinds to the school classroom. The results of this study were as follows; Among wooden blinds, aluminium blinds, and polyester blinds, the aluminium blinds were most excellent. In addition, among white blinds, light brown blinds, dark brown blinds, the light brown were most excellent.
This paper has been conducted to estimate cooling capacity of the dehumidification tower using hot water from a solar water heating system as a energy source of regeneration process when the dehumidification and drying system is applied to room cooling. A solar water heating system was operated and indoor temperature distributions were simulated according to weather conditions when the concerned solution was used to dehumidify room air in the dehumidification tower. Through this simulation researches we found th following results ; It was found that air velocity through supply and return diffusers should be controlled because it can cause uncomfort in dwelling area. It was found that in the sunny morning temperatures of dwelling area 1 and 2 are higher than those of dwelling area 3 and 4. In this research all the calculation results of heating and cooling system supported by solar water heater have confirmed that its cooling capacity could not reach PMV 0, thermal comfort.
Dynamic pricing refers to a system in which a tariff varies, according to a level of charging and applied time depending on time change. The power billing system used in the Korean Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) is based on time of use (TOU) pricing, which is one of the dynamic pricing systems. This paper aimed to determine the operational results of a variable refrigerant flow system, to which a new control algorithm was applied, in order to respond to dynamic pricing, in summer and the utility of the new control. To do this, real measured data was acquired from a VRF system installed in a building for educational purposes, where dynamic pricing was applied for about 100 days during summer time. At the maximum load operation time period in TOU, the new control minimized operation within the indoor comfort range, an increase in refrigerant evaporation temperature in the indoor unit and the number of revolutions in a compressor in the outdoor unit was limited. As a result, power usage was decreased by 11%, and the operational cost by 14.6%. Furthermore, measurement results using the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) model, that represented satisfaction of thermal environment, showed that 82.8% to 90.4% of the occupants of the building were satisfied during operation when the new control was applied.
PMV and ADPI were numerically investigated in a large space of various ceiling height with air-conditioning systems of two type. The numerical results showed that it is small that the growth of cooling load according to ceiling height rise in a large space without windows. In case of system air-conditioner of duct type embedded in the ceiling, the air mixing effect in indoor is superior to a case installed 4way cassette type in it. For controling thermal comfort at indoor, a system air-conditioner of duct type embedded in the ceiling is little influenced according to ceiling height rise in a large space considered.
As children are known to touch and chew everything, green cleaning procedures are an important step in preventing children from ingesting harmful toxins. The objectives of this study are to develop a new, self-evaluation checklist and to suggest design recommendations which comply with easy, adaptable, economical ways to improve the eco-friendly indoor environment of Korean childcare facilities. The information compiled during this study was collected through literature review and internet surveys1) from July, 2009 to February, 2010. The results of this study show that the current Korean childcare accreditation system and practices emphasize clean building interiors, policies for sanitation and cleanliness, and control of humidity and lighting. On the other hand, the information provided by green-building rating systems from GBCC, LEED, and GBTool offers additional and comparative details regarding indoor environment quality and standards regarding the IAQ performance and management plan, ventilation and thermal comfort systems, views from windows, acoustics, and lighting. In conclusion, this document provides an appropriate and easy-to-follow, self-evaluation checklist composed of eight criteria and 51 practical items. This study also provides the design recommendations composed of 27 practical ideas focusing on interior elements. Both the checklist and design recommendations I have suggested can be a post-occupancy tool for evaluating eco-healthy facility standards as well as tips for continuing to maintain eco-healthy childcare facilities.
The purpose of this study was to examine the differences of clothing microclimates and the subjective sensations according to age, gender and clothing weight for $19^{\circ}C$ air temperature. This study was done to gain fundamental data related to saving heating energy and to improve health through wearing underwear (long johns) in lower indoor temperatures. The subjects were divided into four groups (6 young males, 5 young females, 6 old males, 6 old females), and our experiment consisted of three conditions; the first condition was wearing long underwear in $19^{\circ}C$ air (19CUW condition); the second condition was without wearing long underwear in $19^{\circ}C$ air (19C condition); and the third condition was without wearing underwear in $24^{\circ}C$ air (24C condition). The experiment showed that the clothing microclimate temperature and humidity was the lowest in the 19C condition and the highest in the 24C condition irrespective of age and gender. The clothing microclimate in the 19CUW condition was not significantly distinguishable from the other conditions. Clothing microclimate temperature and humidity when the subjects responded thermal comfort was $28\~34^{\circ}C$ and $15\~40\%$RH without any significant difference according to age and gender. For the thermal sensation, the 24C condition was regarded as the warmest environment by the four groups, and the next preference was the 19CUW condition (p<0.001). Young females and old males showed a tendency to feel colder than young males and old females. For the thermal sensation of hands and feet, the young groups felt the warmest in the 24C condition and the coolest in the 19 C condition (p<0.001). However, old males felt neutral for the foot thermal sensation without any significant difference between the three conditions. Old females felt neutral for both the hands and feet thermal sensations without any significant difference between the three conditions. Thermal preference was the highest in the 24C condition for the 4 groups. In the 19CUW condition, for the thermal preference, most young males and females responded 'No change'; on the other hand, mea of the old responded 'Warmer'(p<0.001). It was the 24C condition that the 4 subject groups felt the most thermally comfortable. In the 19CUW condition, over $80\%$ of responses of each group expressed satisfaction and in the 19C condition, over $80\%$ of responses of each group, except young females, expressed satisfaction. In conclusion, in view of the clothing microclimate and subjective sensations, the 24C condition was the condition that gave subjects the least cold stress and the best subjective preference. However, the 19C condition and the 19CUW condition was not such a cold stress as to give healthy subjects a thermal burden.
To analyze human thermal environments in protected horticultural houses (plastic houses), human thermal sensations estimated using measured microclimatic data (air temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar and terrestrial radiation) were compared between an outdoor area and two indoor plastic houses, a polyethylene (PE) house and a polycarbonate (PC) house. Measurements were carried out during the daytime in autumn, a transient season that exhibits human thermal environments ranging from neutral to very hot. The mean air temperature and absolute humidity of the houses were $14.6-16.8^{\circ}C$ (max. 22. $3^{\circ}C$) and $7.0-12.0g{\cdot}m^{-3}$ higher than those of the outdoor area, respectively. Solar (K) and terrestrial (L) radiation were compared directionally from the sky hemisphere (${\downarrow}$) and the ground hemisphere (${\uparrow}$). The mean $K{\downarrow}$ and $K{\uparrow}$ values for the houses were respectively $232.5-367.8W{\cdot}m^{-2}$ and $44.9-55.7W;{\cdot}m^{-2}$ lower than those in the outdoor area; the mean $L{\downarrow}$ and $L{\uparrow}$ values were respectively $150.4-182.3W{\cdot}m^{-2}$ and $30.5-33.9W{\cdot}m^{-2}$ higher than those in the outdoor area. Thus, L was revealed to be more influential on the greenhouse effect in the houses than K. Consequently, mean radiant temperature in the houses was higher than the outdoor area during the daytime from 10:45 to 14:15. As a result, mean human thermal sensation values in the PMV, PET, and UTCI of the houses were respectively $3.2-3.4^{\circ}C$ (max. $4.7^{\circ}C$), $15.2-16.4^{\circ}C$ (max. $23.7^{\circ}C$) and $13.6-15.4^{\circ}C$ (max. $22.3^{\circ}C$) higher than those in the outdoor area. The heat stress levels that were influenced by human thermal sensation were much higher in the houses (between hot and very hot) than in the outdoor (between neutral and warm). Further, the microclimatic component that most affected the human thermal sensation in the houses was air temperature that was primarily influenced by $L{\downarrow}$. Therefore, workers in the plastic houses could experience strong heat stresses, equal to hot or higher, when air temperature rose over $22^{\circ}C$ on clear autumn days.
The purpose of this study was to investigate thermal environmental factors, thermal clothing properties, and thermal sensation of the office workers in four selected office buildings in Seoul, and to determine the effect of thermal environmental factors and clothing insulation to the thermal sensation of the subjects. The subjects selected from each office were 5 males and 5 females at a time. Thermal environmental factors(DBT, GT, RH, MRT, $ET^{\ast}$) and clothing variables such as clothing weight per body surface $area(g/m^2)$ and estimated clothing insulation values(clo) were significantly different among each seasons(p<0,001). Means of $ET^{\ast}$ and estimated clothing insulation values of each season were as follows; Winter; $20.84^{\circ}C$$ET^{\ast}$ with 0.72 clo for male and 0.79 clo for female Spring and fall; $23.65^{\circ}C$$ET^{\ast}$ with 0.59 clo for male and 0.68 clo for female Summer; $26.00^{\circ}C$$ET^{\ast}$ with 0.47 clo for male and 0.53 clo for female. In comparison these data with ASHRAE Standard, the subjects were predicted to feel comfort-able in spring and fall, and slightly hot in summer and slightly cold in winter because of high and low clo respectively. But the result of this survey showed more than $80\%$ of the occupants were thermally comfortable at a given environmental temperature and clo.
