  • This research has a purpose to achieve experimental data used for design of ventilation systems necessary for indoor air quality control and their operation and management. For the study, spatial concentration distribution of indoor air quality according to pollutant site in a simplified model chamber. In low flow ventilation, flow pattern of indoor air was mainly influenced by diffusion and additionally, spatial distribution was formed by convection. Distribution of ventilation efficiency according to each pattern of model chamber was evaluated. It was confirmed that diffusion patterns of a pollutant among sites were formed, centering around main stream areas of supply and exhaust outlets.

  • With ever increasing number of citizen using subway stations everyday, safety, health and comfort of passengers and occupants (mostly metro personnel) have become important social issues. Considering the fact that various physical variables and pollutants such as particulate, VOCs and biological agents are closely related to indoor air quality (IAQ) which may cause health problems, a method of quantitative assessment using information-theoretic measure on such variables needs to be devised and implemented for comfort, health and safety of passengers and occupants in the subway station. A basic framework for assessing indoor air quality (for comfort and health) and safety in subway station is suggested. In particular, application of information-theoretic measure for the assessment of indoor air quality, comfort and safety in subway station is discussed. Some examples are presented as well.

  • There has been growing concern regarding IAQ(Indoor Air Quality) recently, and IAQ problems from the air-tightness and use of chemical materials addition to the building materials have become increasingly important factors in the built environment. Ventilation is supposed as the solution of healthy indoor quality, and Korea government requests that all new apartment buildings must have a ventilation system as a matter of duty since January, 2006. The purpose of this study is to investigate the indoor concentration change of VOCs include the Formaldehyde according to many different ventilation supply types. Results showed that the reduction effect of target pollutants by the ventilation system was very slight. The cause of these results was attribute to increase the emission rate of building materials by increasing the ventilation rate.

  • Radon has been considered the greatest source of exposure within the total radiation exposure of the human body. xposure from radon, which exists in indoor air quality, lacks public perception, Radon, which exists anywhere on earth, is not regarded as a state of attention even if it is above the average level. Indoor radon exposure situations are not intentionally introduced, and essentially the attention and responsibilities of radon exposures are assumed to be in indoor occupants. So, these are caused by common uranium and thorium scattering on Earth, and are brought into the building by fine cracks or exposed indicators of the buildings. Therefore, this study aims to reduce the risk of radon rays and reduce radon, which induces diseases caused by breathing in the body of indoor air pollutants and emitting diseases by emitting alpha rays from the radon gas.

  • Everyone is aware that air and environmental pollutants are harmful to health. Among them, indoor air quality directly affects physical health, such as respiratory rather than outdoor air. However, studies that have examined the correlation between environmental and health information have been conducted with public data targeting large cohorts, and studies with real-time data analysis are insufficient. Therefore, this research explores the research with an indoor air quality monitoring (AQM) system based on developing environmental detection sensors and the internet of things to collect, monitor, and analyze environmental and health data from various data sources in real-time. It explores the usage of wearable devices for health monitoring systems. In addition, the availability of big data and artificial intelligence analysis and prediction has increased, investigating algorithmic studies for accurate prediction of hazardous environments and health impacts. Regarding health effects, techniques to prevent respiratory and related diseases were reviewed.

  • Recently, Indoor air quality(IAQ) in workplace, residential environments and office has been concern of people, scientists and related the public. The oxygen in air was very important and essential element in every aspect of life. This study was performed on a questionnaire survey of 400 people about their awareness of indoor air quality, oxygen generators and measured of oxygen concentration in indoor environment. The results obtained were as follows; As respondents are having their 90% of daytime indoors a day, and 80% of them can feel indoor air pollutions degrees directly by particle matters. The control of most important problems of IAQ was the poor ventilation. We know that 22% of the respondents was recognized the oxgen generator. And for the installation of indoor pollution control equipment, 20% of all respondents installed oxygen generators because almost respondents was not satified the trust of ability purified indoor air pollutants. In the experimental results, it was found that the oxygen concentration of sampling sites were in the range of 20~23.5%. Therefore, it was recommended that the government related IAQ was suggested the guideline and control of oxygen generators. Finally, it appeared that the oxygen generators using indoor environment can be applied to new technology for cleaning of indoor air.

  • The purpose of the study was to survey the distribution patterns of inorganic elements of PM-10 in the various indoor environments and analyze the pollution patterns of aerosol in various places of indoor environment using a pattern recognition method based on cluster analysis and disjoint principal component analysis. A total of 40 samples in the indoor had been collected using mini-vol portable samplers. These samples were analyzed for their 19 bulk inorganic compounds such as B, Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, Ba, Ce, and Pb by using an ICP-MS. By applying a disjoint principal component analysis, four patterns of the indoor air pollutions were distinguished. The first pattern was identified as a group with high concentrations of PM-10, Na, Mg, and Ca. The second pattern was identified as a group with high concentrations B, Mg, At, Ca, Fe, Cu, and Ba. The third pattern was a group of sites with high concentrations of K, Zn. Cd. The fourth pattern was a group with low concentrations PM-10 and all inorganic elements. This methodology was found to be helpful enough to set the criteria standard of indoor air quality, corresponding pollutants, and classification of indoor environment categories when making an indoor air quality law.

  • This study measured indoor and outdoor levels of hydrocarbon volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene isomers (collectively referred to as BTEX), as well as 13 carbonyl compounds, at 20 homes in Seoul, South Korea. Along with the sampling of BTEX and carbonyls, indoor concentrations of the air pollutants nitrogen oxide (NO) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) were also measured at each home. These measurements were used to understand the characteristics of BTEX and carbonyls by calculating the various ratios and correlation coefficients between measured contaminant levels. We found that carbonyls were mostly originated from indoor sources, while BTEX were originated from both indoor and outdoor sources. A high correlation between indoor levels of NO and BTEX indicated that traffic emissions were also an important sources of BTEX.

  • A comprehensive air quality monitoring was carried out to investigate the criteria concentration of air pollutant in indoor of subway stations of Seoul City. The samples were collected twice per year (the first and the second half of the year) at each sampling point from February to September in 1997. Sampling point of subway stations was ticket office and platform. The measurement of indoor air pollutants such as sulfur dioxide(SO$_2$), nitrogen dioxide(NO$_2$), carbon monoxide(CO), carbon dioxide(CO$_2$), total suspended particulate(TSP) was performed to determine the indoor air quality. Heavy metals(Pb, Cd, Cu, Cr, As, Hg) were also measured together with those air pollutants. The annual average concentration of CO$_2$ and TSP in subway stations were relatively high while those of heavy metals were within 10% of environmental recommended standard concentration in all stations. As results of regression analysis between line and line of air factors, the concentrations of CO, CO$_2$, TSP, Pb, Cd, Cr and Cu were highly correlated, but those of $SO_2, NO_2$ and Hg were not correlated. As results of regression analysis between ticket office and platform, the concentrations of heavy metals such as Cr and Cu were highly correlated. Results of oneway analysis of variance between the first and the second half of the year air factors also indicated that CO, CO$_2$, Cd, Cu, Hg were significant($\alpha$=0.01), respectively. The average contration of total suspended particulate(TSP) in subway line No. 1 was shown high concentration(200 $\mu g/m^3\cdot$ day) level.
