  • To promote environmentally responsible architectural practice, many nations have established their own green building rating system. Among other criteria, recently the indoor environmental quality section has been paid great attention due to Sick Building Syndrome, as this believed to caused by polluted indoor environment. In this context, indoor environmental quality is one of very important sections of each green building rating system and closely related to the very happiness of building users. The goal of this research is to compare and analyze the indoor environmental sections of three green building rating systems, GBCC, LEED v2.1, and BREEAM Office 2005, and find a direction for the improvement of GBCC. First, the three rating systems are analyzed in general to compare the importance of indoor environmental factors in each system. Second, the indoor environmental factors are reclassified within related sub-categories for the comparable analysis. Finally, based upon the comparable analysis, directions for the improvement of GBCC are as follows: 1. GBCC's h4r Environment Section needs to clarify its VOCs criteria based upon types of finish materials. 2. Sound Environment Section's noise control criteria needs to be revised based upon types of building usages and application method. 3. An indoor lighting related section needs to be included in GBCC, as even though light is the one of the most important factors in indoor environment, it has not been included in GBCC yet. 4. The sub-section of Confortable Indoor Environment Section related to the resting space and the universal accessibility are not in accord with the goal of green building rating system. These items need to be dealt within general building codes. 5. The rating evaluation structure and process need to be streamlined.

  • This study was conducted to select efficient foliage plants for improving indoor environment conditions through the investigation of physiological responses including photosynthetic rate according to temperature, light intensity, and $CO_2$ level. Eight popular foliage plants used in this study were $Hedera$ $helix$ L., $Cissus$ $rhombifolia$ Vahl, $Ficus$ $benjamina$ L. 'Hawaii', $Syngonium$ $podophyllum$ Schott 'Albo-Virens', $Dieffenbachia$ $sp.$ 'Marrianne', $Pachira$ $aquatica$ Aubl., $Spathiphyllum$ $wallisii$ Regel, and $Scindapsus$ $aureus$ Engler. Photosynthetic rate and transpiration rate of the plants subjected to various light intensities (0, 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, 300, and $600{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPFD), $CO_2$ levels (0, 50, 100, 200, 400, 700, and $1,000{\mu}molCO_2{\cdot}mol^{-1}$), and two different temperatures (16 and $22^{\circ}C$) were measured. In addition, various parameters in relation to photosynthesis were calculated from the measured data. As a result, the patterns of photosynthesis varied among 8 foliage plants according to light intensity, $CO_2$ level, and temperature. Most foliage plants except $Dieffenbachia$ had high levels of apparent quantum yield, which represents the photosynthetic rate under low light intensity (PPFD $0-100{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$). $Hedera$ $helix$, $Ficus$ $benjamina$, $Pachira$ $aquatica$, and $Spathiphyllum$ $wallisii$ exposed to high light intensity (PPFD $200-600{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) showed high levels of photosynthesis. $Cissus$ $rhombifolia$ and $Syngonium$ $podophyllum$ were low in $CO_2$ fixation efficiency compared to the other 6 foliage indoor plants. $Hedera$ $helix$ and $Spathiphyllum$ $wallisii$ showed high photosynthetic rate under high $CO_2$ level and vigorous photosynthesis was also observed in $Ficus$ $benjamina$ and $Pachira$ $aquatica$ grown under $22^{\circ}C$. Considering characteristics of indoor environment such as low light, high $CO_2$ level, and low relative humidity, therefore, $Hedera$ $helix$, $Spathiphyllum$ $wallisii$, $Ficus$ $benjamina$, and $Pachira$ $aquatica$ were efficient indoor foliage plants to improve indoor environmental conditions.

  • Heat radiation of LED luminaires has risen a problem when applied indoor. LEDs can save energy with higher efficacy than other light sources. However, their heat radiation may increase power consumption for air-conditioning. Therefore, this paper carried out a comparative analysis on the amount of heat radiation for MR16, E26 bulb, and down-light which will be replaced to LED luminaires. Heat amount of LED-MR16 and LED-downlight was 48% and 87.5% lower than that of conventional lamps, halogen MR16 and E26 CFL, respectively. Consequently, the heat amount and indoor temperature were proportional to the power consumption of luminaire. Therefore, the use of LED luminaire can reduce the amount of heat radiation as well as power consumption.

  • Various presowing seed treatments have been used to enhance the rates of germination and afterward seedling emergence. Seeds treated by them occasionally have not shown the same rate in indoor and field. The presowing treatments considering germination mechanism and factors affecting germination should be totally included in indoor experiments so that the results drawn could be reproduced in the field. Seed drying after the treatments and field conditions after sowing especially able to show Phytochromemediated responses related to light treatment must be determined prior to force the treatments to seeds. After set up these prerequisites to promote the rates of germination and emergence, many seed treatments proposed so far must be fixed how to be done; alone, sequential and simultaneous.

  • As being inconvenient to apply reinforced concrete structure to high-rise buildings. it is applied steel structured system. Therefore light-weight wall systems are applied as partition wall to reduce the self-load of the building. But. the required performances of a light-weight wall are not evaluated systematically. As a field survey result. partition walls of house-to-house and room-to-room were not showed their respected performances. so the dwellers are feel so worse the quality of the whole building. In steel-structured high-rise buildings especially. occupant's dissatisfaction concerned indoor noise was high because curtain wall systems having a high air-tight performance isolate the outdoor noise making masking effect. Also to suppress indoor air movement. stact effect must be concerned. Therefore wall systems which have high performances of sound insulation and air-tightness are required in high-rise buildings.

  • This paper proposes a planar projection DV-hop location algorithm (PTCDV-hop) based on the LED semi-angle at half power (SAHP, which accounts for LED SAHP characteristics in visible light communication (VLC)) and uses the DV-hop algorithm for range-free localization. Distances between source nodes and nodes positioned in three-dimensional indoor space are projected onto a two-dimensional plane to reduce complexity. Circles are structured by assigning source nodes (projected onto the horizontal plane of the assigned nodes) to be centers and the projection distances as radii. The proposed PTCDV-hop algorithm then determines the position of node location coordinates using the trilateral-weighted-centroid algorithm. Simulation results show localization errors of the proposed algorithm are on the order of magnitude of a millimeter when three sources are used. The PTCDV-hop algorithm has higher positioning accuracy and stronger dominance than the traditional DV-hop algorithm.

  • VLC(Visible Light Communication) is the technology to send and receive data by using visible light that LED emits. The basic principle of VLC is the communication by using flashing(ON/OFF) of the light from the LED that changes electricity to light in short time. As the recent advances in LED technology, VLC is also received a lot of attention and the research about it is in progress actively. Especially, the interest about indoor VLC system is increasing because the visible light can't pass through the wall. In this paper, we compose the indoor SISO VLC system with NRZ-OOK and VPPM modulation schemes. Also, we apply SR-ARQ, a kind of re-transmission error control schemes, to the VLC system. And then, we compare and analyze the performance of communication according to the location of receiver and the type of modulation by using BER, the number of transmission and throughput.

  • This study determined the characteristics of LED illumination and photosynthetically active radiation flux density (PPFD) for LED lighting design in an indoor plant factory. This was done based on the light wavelength and PPFD intensity required for plant growth. It has been found that the wavelength and intensity are decreased according to the measuring distance, and green light has an important role in illumination characteristics, while blue light has an important role in the PPFD characteristics. Considering only the photosynthetic properties of plants, the effective order of photosynthesis was blue>red>white>green. When the measurement distance was 30 [cm], it was found that reduction levels of 60 [cm], 90 [cm], and 120 [cm] decreased to about 36 [%], 18 [%], and 10 [%], respectively. As a result of the characteristics of mixed light (red:blue=2:1, 3:1, 4:1) and the measurement distance, when the measured value at 30 [cm] is 100%, the measured value at 120 [cm] is 10-11 [%]. From the obtained results, an optimal structure was proposed for maximizing the light efficiency of an indoor greenhouse for future research.

  • Because an irradiation of 405 nm violet light could have a strong energy, it was used to be sterilized against various microbes in the indoor air condition or fresh food. Escherichia coli is a representative bio-pollutant in the indoor air-borne bacteria, and a hygienic microbe in the horticultural food. This study evaluated the inactivation influences on E. coli DS5α after exposure to 405 nm violet-light (VL) by investigating irradiating time, and the vertical and horizonal distance from light source. The illumination of 405 nm VL was inversely proportional to the distance from the VL source. E. coli DS5α on nutrient agar (NA) was inactivated approximately 50% more than the control when irradiated at 65 cm from 405 nm VL for 3 hours. When compared to the control, E. coli DS5α was inactivated approximately 50% within 70 cm from 405 nm VL for 3 hours. As it was irradiated for 3 hours 70 cm away from 405 nm VL, the horizonal distance from the point was negatively correlated to the inactivation of E. coli DS5α. These results indicated that the inactivation of E. coli DS5α grown on NA medium needs to be irradiated with 405 nm within 70 cm from the light source for 3 hours.
