  • It has been unclear whether the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella can overwinter in Korean field conditions. This study determined overwintering conditions of P. xylostella by conducting field exposure tests based on its cold tolerance and monitoring overwintering populations by direct examination of overwintering larval habitats and capturing adults with sex pheromone traps. In addition, the overwintering populations were analyzed using polymorphic genetic markers to trace their sources. When all immature stages of P. xylostella were exposed to $-5^{\circ}C$, which was the temperature much above their supercooling points, they significantly suffered with direct cold injuries, where larval stage was most tolerant to the cold injury. However, the exposure to $5^{\circ}C$ for a long period (4 weeks) did not give any significant cold injury to nonfeeding stages, while this treatment gave lethality to larval stage without diet. When all developmental stages of P. xylostella were exposed to open field conditions during winter, they exhibited significant decreases of survival rates. However, some protected and indoor conditions reduced the cold injuries and the diet provision significantly increased larval survival rates. Adult monitoring with sex pheromone during winter period indicated that the first captures were observed at similar periods at different locations (${\approx}260$ Km apart). The overwintering adults were captured until early April. Genetic variation of these overwintering populations was analyzed with polymorphic molecular markers, indicating significant genetic divergences among the overwintering populations. This study indicates that P. xylostella can overwinter in southern Korean fields or some protected greenhouses with host plants.

  • This study has its aim at suggesting new direction of our education to search different ways in housing contents by comparing the necessity perception and demands between teachers and students for housing contents in Technology Home Economics curriculum of middle school. To achieve this aim, I chose middle school teachers in charge of Technology Home Economics and male and female students who are in the first grade in high school in Ulsan. I sent e-mail, mail, and visited researcher to gather the data. I used SPSS +12 statistical package for frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test to analyze the data. Here is the result. First, In the part of application of living place, teachers had necessity perception in use and placement of furniture, and arrangement of objects. Students had necessity perception in the use and placement of furniture, the kind and choice of furniture. Also in the indoor environment and equipment part, both teachers and students had necessity perception in controlling of ventilation, temperature, and humidity. In the part of maintenance repair of housing, teachers had necessity perception in the need for maintenance management but students had necessity perception in house equipments and repair had high necessity perception Second, In housing-related general part, teachers demanded housing for elderly, disabled people, information about future housing and students demanded environmentally friendly living environment, housing for elderly, disabled people. In interior design part, teachers demanded in the expression of interior places through computer, the kind and characteristic of housing material and students demanded the way to reuse old furniture, kind and characteristic of housing material. In the part of housing preparation and occupation, teachers demanded the kind of housing-related occupation and students demanded the housing tax and the process of house purchase or concerned matter. Third, there were some difference of necessity perception and degree of demand between teachers and students. Teachers had higher necessity perception and demand in all part except in demand for housing equipment, maintenance, and environmentally friendly living environment.

  • Present work was conducted to investigate the combined effects of gamma-radiation and chemical treatment on the inhibition of sprouting and decay of potato tubers. Irish Cobbler, Apollo and Shimabara potato tubers were immersed in 1000, 2000 and 3000 ppm solution of salicylic acid for 2 minutes, and then irradiated at doses of 5, 10, and 15 krad using an indoor gamma room of approximately 10,000 Ci of $^{60}Co$. Treated tubers were stored for 8 months at room temperature. The results of this work are summarized as follows: 1. Moisture content of irradiated potato tubers was changed less than the control, and decreased gradually along with an extended storage period. Ascorbic acid content was remarkably decreased by gamma-radiation and an extended storage period. 2. Reducing sugar content of irradiated potato tubers tended to increase greatly compared with unirradiated potato tubers, however, starch content of irradiated potato tubers decreased compared with the control. Reducing sugar and starch content of all groups also decreased gradually along with an extended storage period. 3. The storageability of Irish Cobbler variety was best among three varieties and Shimabara variety was worst among them when gamma-radiation is treated singly or in combination with the chemical. Sprouting of potato tubers was more suppressed in combination treatment than single treatment. 4. Decay of potato tubers was more reduced in combination treatment than single treatment. Chemical treatment or gamma-radiation followed by chemical treatment had no influence on decay or spronting of potato tubers. 5. Weight loss of potato tubers was considerably increased as storage period became extended. Shrinkage was, more serious in Shimabara than in rish Cobbler.

  • This study aimed to assess the performance and life of nine natural mineral dancheong pigments: Seokganju, Jinsa, Hwangto, Jahwang, Wunghwang, Seokrok, Noerok, Seokcheong, and Baekto. The design of the accelerated weathering test considered the domestic climate characteristics and the location of Dancheong. Outdoor weathering tests were conducted at the Research Institute in Daejeon and the Sungnyemun Gate in Seoul to confirm the field reproducibility of the accelerated weathering test. Monitoring of the physical changes in pigments through accelerated and outdoor weathering tests are based on ultraviolet exposure dose. Despite small cracks at the beginning of the tests, the monitoring showed that Seokganju and Baekto had no marked physical changes, but the surface cracks of Jinsa and Seorok continue to expand. Hwangto and Noerok were marked with water or were resin stained, and the particles of Jahwang, Wunghwang, and Seokcheong had lost their luster. Despite the absolute difference in color change in each test, the final chromaticity change patterns of pigments were similar in that the color difference between Baekto and Noerok was below five, and Jina was above 28. The physical and surface color pigment changes were more concentrated in outdoor weathering tests than in accelerated tests, and the Seoul site was more intense than the Daejeon site. This is because outdoor weathering tests are exposed to severe variations of temperature and moisture or deposition of dust particles and, in the case of Seoul, the site is more exposed to the external environment than the Daejeon site.

  • Air quality in the livestock waste compost pilot plant at the Colligate Livestock Station was assessed to quantity the emissions of aerial contaminants and evaluate the degree of correlation between them for different operation strategies; with the ventilation types and agitation of compost pile, in this study. The parameters analyzed to reflect the level of air quality in the livestock waste compost pilot plant were the gaseous contaminants; ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and odor concentration, the particulate contaminants; inhalable dust and respirable dust, and the biological contaminants; total airborne bacteria and fungi. The mean concentrations of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and odor concentration in the compost pilot plant without agitation were 2.45ppm, 19.96ppb, and 15.8 when it was naturally ventilated, and 7.61ppm, 31.36ppb, and 30.2 when mechanically ventilated. Those with agitation were 5.50ppm, 14.69ppb, and 46.4 when naturally ventilated, and 30.12ppm, 39.91ppb, and 205.5 when mechanically ventilated. The mean concentrations of inhalable and respirable dust in the compost pilot plant without agitation were 368.6${\mu}g$/$m^3$ and 96.0${\mu}g$/$m^3$ with natural ventilation, and 283.9${\mu}g$/$m^3$ and 119.5${\mu}g$/$m^3$ with mechanical ventilation. They were also observed with agitation to 208.7${\mu}g$/$m^3$ and 139.8${\mu}g$/$m^3$ with natural ventilation, and 209.2${\mu}g$/$m^3$ and 131.7${\mu}g$/$m^3$ with mechanical ventilation. Averaged concentrations of total airborne bacteria and fungi in the compost pilot plant without agitation were observed to 28,673cfu/$m^3$ and 22,507cfu/$m^3$ with natural ventilation, and 7,462cfu/$m^3$ and 3,228cfu/$m^3$ with mechanical ventilation. They were also observed with agitation to 19,592cfu/$m^3$ and 26,376cfu/$m^3$ with the natural ventilation, and 18,645cfu/$m^3$ and 24,581cfu/$m^3$ with the mechanical ventilation. It showed that the emission rates of gaseous pollutants, such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and odor concentration, in the compost pilot plant operated with the mechanical ventilation and with the agitation of compost pile were higher than those with the natural ventilation and without the agitation. While the concentrations of inhalable dust and total airborne bacteria in the compost pilot plant with the natural ventilation and with the agitation, the concentrations of respirable dust and total airborne fungi in the compost pilot plant with the mechanical ventilation and agitation were higher than those with the natural ventilation and without the agitation of compost pile. It was statistically proved that indoor temperature and relative humidity affected the release of particulates and biological pollutants, and ammonia and hydrogen sulfide were believed primary malodorous compounds emitted from the compost pilot plant.
