Air quality in a subway tunnel has been crucial in most of the subway environments where IAQ could be affected by many factors such as the number of passengers, the amount and types of ventilation, train operation factors and other facilities. A modeling approach has been introduced to manage the general IAQ in a subway station. Field surveys and $CO_2$ measurements were initially conducted to analyze and understand the relationship between indoor and outdoor air quality while considering internal pollution sources, such as passengers and subway trains, etc. The measurement data were then employed for the model development with other statistical information. For the model development, the algorithm of simple continuity was set up and applied to model the subway IAQ concerned, while considering the major air transport through staircases and tunnels. Monitored $CO_2$ concentration on the concourse and platform were correlated with modeling results where the correlation values for the concourse and platform were $R^2=0.96$ and $R^2=0.75$, respectively. It implies that the box modeling approach introduced in this study would be beneficial to predict and control the indoor air quality in subway environments.
This research investigated the characteristics of CO, $CO_2$, and $NO_2$ concentrations at main subway stations in Busan. The annual mean CO concentrations at the Suyeong and Nampo stations were 0.75 ppm and 0.48 ppm, respectively. Annual $CO_2$ concentration at the Seomyeon 1- platform was 649 ppm. The $NO_2$ concentrations at the Seomyeon 2- waiting room and the Yeonsan station were 0.048 ppm and 0.037 ppm, respectively. CO concentration was highest at two times of the day, and was proportional to the number of passengers commuting to and from work. The CO and $CO_2$ concentrations were highest in winter, but $NO_2$ concentration was highest in spring. CO and $CO_2$ concentrations were highest on Saturday and lowest on Sunday. The correlation of CO and $NO_2$ concentrations measured at the subway stations with those at the ambient air quality station were highest at the Seomyeon 1 and 2- waiting room and Jeonpodong. The correlation was lowest at the Yeonsan and Yeonsandong station. The number of days when $CO_2$ concentration exceeded 700 ppm over the last three years at the Seomyeon 1- platform was 174. The findings of this research are expected to deepen understanding of the fine particle characteristics at subway stations in Busan and be useful for developing a strategy for controlling urban indoor air quality.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the location of the outlets in the mechanical ventilation system installed in apartment. We performed the numerical analysis to estimate the ventilation effectiveness and the indoor $CO_2$ concentration considering the occupants and the condition with inlet and outlet in each room. From the numerical results, modified location of the outlets is about 10% high than designed one with respect to the ventilation effectiveness when the occupants are not considered. But designed location of inlet and outlet in living room and kitchen is better than modified one with respect to the reduction of $CO_2$ concentration in the living room and kitchen with occupants. In case of our model, Air change per hour (0.7) is not enough to sustain the acceptable criteria of $CO_2$ concentration (1000ppm) in the room with the occupants

Background: Adolescents are relatively more sensitive than adults to exposure to indoor pollutants. The indoor air quality in classrooms where students spend time together must therefore be managed at a safe level because it can affect the health of students. Objectives: In this study, three types of green-wall models were applied to classrooms where students spend a long time in a limited space, and the resulting effects on reducing PM were evaluated. Methods: In the middle school classrooms which were selected as the experimental subjects, IoT-based indoor air quality monitoring equipment was installed for real-time monitoring. Three types of plant models (passive, active, and active+light) were installed in each classroom to evaluate the effects on improving indoor air quality. Results: The concentration of PM in the classroom is influenced by outdoor air quality, but repeated increases and decreases in concentration were observed due to the influence of students' activities. There was a PM reduction effect by applying the green-wall model. There was a difference in PM reduction efficiency depending on the type of green-wall model, and the reduction efficiency of the active model was higher than the passive model. Conclusions: The active green-wall model can be used as an efficient method of improving indoor air quality. Additionally, more research is needed to increase the efficiency of improving indoor air quality by setting conditions that can stimulate the growth of each type of plant.
The elevator is needed healthy and comfortable indoor air quality (IAQ) for using many people, but we found nothing about IAQ studies of an elevator. In general, air in the elevator car is sucked from the elevator's hoistway straight into the car using a fan. The air sucked into the hoistway may be filled with dust, mold and bacteria. This study was performed to measure of characteristics of indoor air quality (PM10, falling bacteria, $CO_2$, Rn and HCHO) in elevator's hoistway, CAR and lobby of 8 sites (4 apartments and 4 commercial buildings) in Gyeongnam from May, 2010 to January, 2011. With regards to the differences of pollutant distribution among hoistway, CAR, and lobby, the concentration of Rn and HCHO were the highest in hoistway followed by CAR and lobby, and PM10, falling bacteria and $CO_2$ were the highest in CAR followed by hoistway and lobby. Mean concentrations of PM10 were 104.9 ${\mu}g/m^3$ in CAR, 92.3 ${\mu}g/m^3$ in hoistway and 68.2 ${\mu}g/m^3$ in lobby, respectively.
Recently, natural disasters have unexpectedly occurred at various places in the world and the countermeasure of them become the social issues. Many of victims in disasters need temporary residential facilities above all things and many of researches have been conducted in order to develop simple, safe, and economic designs of them. Moreover, indoor thermal comfort and air quality must be considered in the facilities against a disaster, because clean and healthy space should be provided to the suffered victims. In this research, in order to estimate the indoor environment of the developed modular building for disaster preparation, CFD simulation was conducted in the various condition. In this paper, indoor air quality such as the age of air, the concentration of $CO_2$ was estimated by the case study
The intent of this study is to propose a method for appraisal of the indoor thermal environment of apartment housing by measuring physical factors and residents' response to questionnaire survey. The experiments were performed on eight houses each in summer (August 18 through 31,1995) and winer (february 16 through 20,1996). It included measurements of indoor air temperature, globe temperature, relative humidity, and CO2 concentration. The questionnaire surveys were performed each in summer (July 16 through 20, 1996) and winer (February 13 through 16, 1996). And 248 cases in summer and 297 cases in winter were used in analysis. These questionnaire surveys asked residents' response about thermal sensation, humidity sensation, sense of air freshness regarding the indoor thermal environment. data acquired through the experiments and questionnaire surveys were then transferred to scales that allowed relative comparison, and measured to an appraisal standard chart. Appraisal tools included appraisal charts and radar charts. Indoor thermal environment was judged to be positive according to experiments, but residents appraised the thermal environment to be average. This difference between the two can be found in the strict standards by which residents judge the thermal environment of their apartments.
Recognizing interaction between the environment and humans, the EIA(environmental impact assessment) movement has sought to promote more environmentally sound and informed decisions for the sake of human welfare. Therefore, most EIA programs require the consideration of human health impacts. Yet relatively few EIA documents adequately address those impacts. This study was carried out to investigate the role of EIA for reuniting the environment and human health, for preventing and reducing significant health risks, and for improving human health impact assessment by means of risk assessment. Risk assessment consists of 4 components; hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment and risk characterization. Since most people spent their times in indoor, indoor air quality modelling can be used in exposure assessment and risk assessment. In this study, indoor $NO_2$ concentration and personal $NO_2$ exposure were estimated by Box Model using mass balance equation and time weighted average, respectively. The estimated indoor $NO_2$ concentration and the personal $NO_2$ exposure were compared by those measured, respectively. Subsequntly, health effect was assessed with these results. Consequently, exposure assessment and risk assessment using indoor air quality model may be considered to be applicable to EIA.

This paper was conducted concerning the degree of indoor air quality in public transport vehicles such as taxicabs, buses and subway trains, as sampled through the active participation of drivers and passengers in Seoul between 13th August 2005 and 2nd November 2005. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Among the measured substances especially respirable particulate matters ($PM_{10}$), total bacteria counts (TBC) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) exceeded the standard level of $150{\mu}g/m^3,\;800CFU/m^3$ and 1000ppm. 2. The concentration of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in taxi recorded 2491ppm, which is more than the standard amount of 1000ppm. This level was comparatively higher than all other public transportation methods. Total bacteria counts (TBC) in bus and subway recorded $1082CFU/m^3\;and\;1856CFU/m^3$, respectively. 3. The drivers who regularly work long hours showed the higher concern about contamination of the air inside the public transport vehicles and they considered it to be worse than the air outside. In contrast, the general public showed less concern about the air quality inside the public transport vehicles. However, they too acknowledged that the quality of the air inside the public transport vehicles was poor. In regards to the degree of indoor air quality in the public transport vehicles, a counterplan must be implemented urgently to effectively combat the excessive levels of $PM_{10}$, microorganism and $CO_2$. We need to gather more conclusive evidence pertaining to other possible contaminants and influencing factors.
This paper describes to analyze the ventilation performance of a room air conditioner for indoor comfort control. An experimental apparatus consists of a test room, the room air conditioner, a tracer gas measurement system, a supply fan and a controller. Ventilation performance as a function of human occupancy is evaluated with supply ventilation air using a tracer gas technique of CO2 gas in the test room. The ventilation performance is evaluated in a step-down method based on ASTM Standard E741-83 and is found to increase with increasing supply ventilation rate. The CO2 gas concentration is decayed rapidly without human occupancy. The ventilation performance without human occupancy increases up to 55% and the ventilation performance with one person increases up to 25% at the supply air of 570 lpm comparing with a natural reduction after one hour. A modeling for ventilation performance of a room air conditioner in a test room is presented using experimental datum.
