  • This paper proposes a multimodal information transformation system that converts the image information to the voice information to provide the sight impaired people with walking area and obstacles, which are extracted by an acquired image from a single CCD camera. Using a chain-code line detection algorithm, the walking area is found from the vanishing point and boundary of a sidewalk on the edge image. And obstacles are detected by Gabor filter of extracting vertical lines on the walking area. The proposed system expresses the voice information of pre-defined sentences, consisting of template words which mean walking area and obstacles. The multi-modal information transformation system serves the useful voice information to the sight impaired that intend to reach their destination. The experiments of the proposed algorithm has been implemented on the indoor and outdoor environments, and verified its superiority to exactly provide walking parameters sentences.

  • In recent years, visual-inertial odometry(VIO) algorithms have been extensively studied for the indoor/urban environments because it is more robust to dynamic scenes and environment changes. In this paper, we propose loosely coupled(LC) VIO algorithm that utilizes the velocity vectors from both visual odometry(VO) and inertial measurement unit(IMU) as a filter measurement of Extended Kalman filter. Our approach improves the estimation performance of a filter without adding extra sensors while maintaining simple integration framework, which treats VO as a black box. For the VO algorithm, we employed a fundamental part of the ORB-SLAM, which uses ORB features. We performed an outdoor experiment using an RGB-D camera to evaluate the accuracy of the presented algorithm. Also, we evaluated our algorithm with the public dataset to compare with other visual navigation systems.

  • Single-view reconstruction (SVR) is a fundamental method in computer vision. Often used for reconstructing human-made environments, the Manhattan world assumption presumes that planes in the real world exist in mutually orthogonal directions. Accordingly, this paper addresses an automatic SVR algorithm for Manhattan worlds. A method for estimating the directions of planes using graph-cut optimization is proposed. After segmenting an image from extracted line segments, the data cost function and smoothness cost function for graph-cut optimization are defined by considering the directions of the line segments and neighborhood segments. Furthermore, segments with the same depths are grouped during a depth-estimation step using a minimum spanning tree algorithm with the proposed weights. Experimental results demonstrate that, unlike previous methods, the proposed method can identify complex Manhattan structures of indoor and outdoor scenes and provide the exact boundaries and intersections of planes.

  • The basic premise of this study was that the elderly family would be one user type to live in apartment houses. This means that apartment houses should be designed by considering the elderly family as well as general young families. The purpose of this study was to carry out POE of apartment houses by the elderly resident and to suggest the design direction of apartment houses from the elderly's point of view. The subject was 150 elderly residents who lived in apartment houses in Jangyu new urban area, Kyungnam. The individual interview was done for this POE by six interviewers. They asked about how degree they were satisfied with 30 design elements of apartment houses. Those consisted of 8 elements related to outdoor environments, 16 ones to indoor environments, and 6 design evaluative elements for the elderly housing. The conclusions were as followings; 1) In general, the elderly subject was very satisfied with their apartment design. However, more considerations of the design evaluative elements for the elderly were needed in order to be apartment houses for the old generation. 2) Natural facilities such as small parks and walks, and local amenities should be arranged systematically to be used easily by the old residents. 3) The design solutions for reducing noise should be added. 4) The same quality of housing environment should be provided in all sizes of housing units.

  • In this paper, "a wireless camera image transmission system" is aimed for the free camera shooting in the indoor and outdoor environments. Currently in broadcasting program production environments, because the cable connections between TV OB VAN(outside broadcasting VAN) and EFP camera or ENG camera have many obstacles and limits of distances, it is very unconvienent for the free camera shooting. Therefore in this paper, wireless image transmission device and receiving device in DVB-T broadcasting are developed. In this paper, analog composite image signal output camera, image signal compression MPEG-2 system and COFDM mage transmission system are produced and experimented. The results for the image and transmission system had good QoS values and from this results, it is possible to apply TV program productions and wireless CCTV device industries.

  • This study was carried out to develop the control system with PLC and its operating software and to investigate its control ability of greenhouse environments. Two experimental greenhouses were controlled by PLC and ON/OFF controller, respectively. In greenhouse controlled by PLC, target values of air temperature, relative humidity and $CO_2$ concentration were automatically changed. In warm-water heating, the variation of air temperature was reduced to $\pm$ $0.6^{\circ}C$ by the method of proportional-integration(PI) control with an inverter. In ventilation, the variation of air temperature was reduced, since windows open and close with multistage by mutual relation formula among the target, indoor, and outdoor temperature. Relative humidity at daytime was maintained with range of 35% to 55% by PLC controlled fogger. $CO_2$ concentration was automatically controlled from 300 to 800 $\mu$molㆍ$mol^{-1}$ according to amount of solar radiation. The suppling amount and frequency of nutrient solution were controlled by total integrated solar radiation. Difference in the yield of cucumber in the greenhouse controlled by PLC and by ON/OFF controller was not significant at the 5% level.

  • In this paper, we propose an intelligent three-legged landing system that can maintain stability and level even on rough terrain than conventional four-legged landing systems. Conventional landing gear has the limitation that it requires flat terrain for landing. The 3-leg landing system proposed in this paper extends the usable range of the legs and reduces the weight, allowing the quadcopter to operate in various environments. To do this, kinematics determine the joint angles and coordinates of the legs of the two-link structure. Based on the angle value of the quadcopter detected via the IMU sensor, the leg control method that corrects the posture is determined. A force sensor attached to the end of the leg is used to detect contact with the ground. At the moment of contact with the ground, landing control starts according to the value of the IMU sensor. The proposed system verifies its reliability in various environments through an indoor landing test stand. Finally, in an outdoor environment, the quadcopter lands on a 20 degree incline and 20 cm rough terrain after flight. This demonstrates the stability and effectiveness of the 3-leg landing system even on rough terrain compared to the 4-leg landing system.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the concentration variations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the office environments located in a large urban area with respect to seasonality, smoking status, types of ventilation and heating. Indoor air sampling was undertaken in 37 and 30 offices in Daegu city during summer and winter, respectively. The VOC samples were collected using adsorbent tubes, and were determined by thermal desorption coupled with GC/MS analysis. The analytical method was validated for repeatability, method detection limits (MDL), and duplication precision. A total of 34 VOCs of environmental concern were determined, including 15 aromatics and 19 halogenated hydrocarbons. Average concentrations of BTEX appeared to 1.91 ppb, 22.98 ppb, 3.44 ppb, and 3.70 ppb, respectively. These values were relatively higher levels than those measured at homes and outdoor roadsides reported by other researches. In general, the concentrations of VOCs were higher in winter than summer, in smoking offices than non-smoking offices, in forced ventilation type than natural ventilation type, and in combustion heating than non-combustion heating offices. However, such differences were not always significant at a level of 0.05 by statistical tests (t-test and/or Mann-Whitney test) with some exceptions for BTEX and styrene. This study demonstrated that smoking status, ventilation type and presence of combustion sources indoors could be important factors on the elevated concentrations of some VOCs in the office environment.
