  • Opinion mining involves the analysis of customer opinions using product reviews and provides meaningful information including the polarity of the opinions. In opinion mining, feature extraction is important since the customers do not normally express their product opinions holistically but separately according to its individual features. However, previous research on feature-based opinion mining has not had good results due to drawbacks, such as selecting a feature considering only syntactical grammar information or treating features with similar meanings as different. To solve these problems, this paper proposes an enhanced feature extraction and refinement method called FEROM that effectively extracts correct features from review data by exploiting both grammatical properties and semantic characteristics of feature words and refines the features by recognizing and merging similar ones. A series of experiments performed on actual online review data demonstrated that FEROM is highly effective at extracting and refining features for analyzing customer review data and eventually contributes to accurate and functional opinion mining.

  • In this paper, we proposed the recognition system of car license plates to mitigate traffic problems. The processing sequence of the proposed algorithm is as follows. At first, a license plate segment is extracted from an acquired car image using morphological features and color information, and noises are eliminated from the extracted license plate segment using line scan algorithm and Grassfire algorithm, and then individual codes are extracted from the license plate segment using edge tracking algorithm. Finally the extracted individual codes are recognized by an FCM algorithm. In order to evaluate performance of segment extraction and code recognition of the proposed method, we used 100 car images for experiment. In the results, we could verify the proposed method is more effective and recognition performance is improved in comparison with conventional car license plate recognition methods.

  • Purpose - Could blood type provide the key to wellness and affect our personality? The theory that blood type is linked to personality (and other mental and physical qualities) is popular mostly in Japan, although it has carried over to Taiwan and South Korea. Research Design, Data, and Methodology - Questionnaires were distributed to 380 production line company employees. The reliability and validity of the questionnaires were examined through independence testing and the average ratio comparison of the two populations. Additionally, using Pearson's chi-square formula, the relationship between the blood group (independent variable) and general group participation (dependent variable) was tested along with the Schuprow coefficient. Result - The prioritization of blood groups over the general group participation was identified and the following results were obtained: Individual group participation is affected by personality features derived from temperament, mood, and other characteristics. Conclusion - The study showed that individual blood groups have an effect on their group cooperation, and among blood groups, blood group A had the greatest tendency to group participation, followed by blood groups O, AB, B, respectively.

  • In parametric approach to a signature verification, it generally uses so many redundant features unsuitable for each individual signature that it causes harm, instead. This paper proposes a method of determining personalized weights of a feature set in signature verification with parametric approach by identifying the characteristics of each feature. For an individual signature, we define a degree of how difficult it is for any other person to forge the one's (called 'DFD' as the Degree of Forgery Difficulty). According to the statistical characteristics and the intuitional characteristics of each feature, the standard features are classified into four types. Four types of DFD functions are defined and applied into the distance calculation as a personalized weight factor. Using this method, the error rate of signature verification is reduced and the variation of the performance is less sensitive to the changes of decision threshold.

  • The extraction of important features in cancer cell image analysis is a key process in grading renal cell carcinoma. In this study, we applied three-dimensional (3D) texture feature extraction methods to cell nuclei images and evaluated the validity of them for computerized cell nuclei grading. Individual images of 2,423 cell nuclei were extracted from 80 renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). First, we applied the 3D texture mapping method to render the volume of entire tissue sections. Then, we determined the chromatin texture quantitatively by calculating 3D gray-level co-occurrence matrices (3D GLCM) and 3D run length matrices (3D GLRLM). Finally, to demonstrate the suitability of 3D texture features for grading, we performed a discriminant analysis. In addition, we conducted a principal component analysis to obtain optimized texture features. Automatic grading of cell nuclei using 3D texture features had an accuracy of 78.30%. Combining 3D textural and 3D morphological features improved the accuracy to 82.19%. As a comparative study, we also performed a stepwise feature selection. Using the 4 optimized features, we could obtain more improved accuracy of 84.32%. Three dimensional texture features have potential for use as fundamental elements in developing a new nuclear grading system with accurate diagnosis and predicting prognosis.

  • A refined version of automatic micro-organism recognition and identification method, 'O.I.S.M.2' is proposed in this paper, using image processing based on an expert system. This proposed method is based on the segmentation of the organism image, characterizing segment features, which are independent of individual size and length. Complicated shapes of organisms are divided into basic shape segments defined in this paper such as lines, circles, ovals etc. Organisms can then be expressed simply in a set of segments, regardless their individual differences.

  • This paper introduces attempts to obtain the'representative'characteristics of the apparent mass and mechanical impedance of seated Korean subjects under vertical vibration. Individual responses of the apparent mass and driving-point mechanical impedance obtained from forty-one Korean subjects are illustrated. Four kinds of vibration levels and three different sitting postures are selected to collect the responses of each subject. Those individual responses are used to estimate the 'mean' mechanical impedance, which may be expected to be a representative model to Korean subjects. Several interesting features of the estimated mechanical impedance are suggested and compared to those of ISO 5982.

  • In this study, we propose several simultaneous tests to detect the difference between means and variances for the two-sample problem when the underlying distribution is normal. For this, we apply the likelihood ratio principle and propose a likelihood ratio test. We then consider a union-intersection test after identifying the likelihood statistic, a product of two individual likelihood statistics, to test the individual sub-null hypotheses. By noting that the union-intersection test can be considered a simultaneous test with combination function, also we propose simultaneous tests with combination functions to combine individual tests for each sub-null hypothesis. We apply the permutation principle to obtain the null distributions. We then provide an example to illustrate our proposed procedure and compare the efficiency among the proposed tests through a simulation study. We discuss some interesting features related to the simultaneous test as concluding remarks. Finally we show the expression of the likelihood ratio statistic with a product of two individual likelihood ratio statistics.

  • This tutorial reviews the principles of dose individualisation with an emphasis on target concentration intervention (TCI). Once a target effect is chosen then pharmacodynamics can predict the target concentration and pharmacokinetics can predict the target dose to achieve the required response. Dose individualisation can be considered at three levels: population, group and individual. Population dosing, also known as fixed dosing or "one size fits all" is often used but is poor clinical pharmacology; group dosing uses patient features such as weight, organ function and comedication to adjust the dose for a typical patient; individual dosing uses observations of patient response to inform about pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics in the individual and use these individual differences to individualise dose.
